AN OFFICIAL *ENGLISH* VERSION OF 2K3 APPROACHES!
Posts
Making it legal would be awesome, but not being able to use patches (or DynRPG + plugins) kind of kills it for me.
The basic 2k3 isn't enough, there's a lot of issues with it that can't be solved without patches.

Even though I'm done with 2k3 now, I'll still gladly sign this. Regardless of what some venomous folks such as Craze may say, 2k3 is a great starting point for beginners and I'd gladly support new folks who are brand new to game making to experiment with a legal version of 2k3. It's a fabulous way to get your feet wet.
I'd buy it if they did the Agility fix just to go back and patch up my games and re-release them. If the price point was reasonable.
I don't seem to make games anymore, so anything beyond that is moot for me.

Oh. Okay. I suppose cool games like Blackmoon Prophecy, Hero's Realm, The Way series, A Blurred Line, Alter A.I.L.A Genesis and Starless Umbra are inferior crap, even if the last two quality games in that list made it to PC Gamer.
hi thanks for not knowing who you're talking about or what my actual platform is? bandwagoning on a hate train really makes you look cool (this is sarcasm)
i've stated many times that i hate 2k/3 as engines (XP is also pretty stupid at this point), but that doesn't mean the games inherently bad. Leo & Leah is possibly my most favorite contemporary indie RPG/adventure game (Naufragar: Crimson is my most favorite 2k3 game of all time, have you even heard of it?), Hero's Realm is pretty rad and I've even attempted to create custom graphics for it, Starless Umbra/DHM are too pretentious for me but I respect the huge amount of time and effort put into the game, etc.
please don't make this about me, guys; i defend myself because i've been called out already but i've made my feelings about the ACTUAL TOPIC known
Meh... The reason why rm2k3 has managed to stay 'relevant' until today is because of all the hacks and patches and external programs that have been pumping new life into the program throughout the years. And it's only thanks to stuff like DynRPG or rm20XX that the average rm2k3 game could still hope to compete with the script-riden games of today... Craze is right, even to do such simple things as to change the system icons would render the license null. It's really not worth it.
And as petty as it may sound, 'supporting' EB on this particular matter isn't that appealing to me either. Not after years of them of giving us the back, and have seen them chicken out on it a couple of times in the past... Also, I find it suspicious that they're willing to do this -now- for only 1k signatures. It sounds more like a PR thing. But whatever...
That being said. I'll sign the petition, just for solidarity's sake. =P

author=alteregoIf EB sold licences for a hypothetical $15 each, assuming everyone signing the petition was legitimately interested in acquiring 2k3 legally they'd be looking at a revenue of $15000. Not a bad return for a ~10-year-old piece of software...

The one thing that people don't realise is that Degica has only recently taken over the publishing of the RM series, that's why there's a lot more... IDK, friendliness towards the western fans? Comparing the company to how it was when 2k3 was just released isn't viable because the company itself has changed. This is a step in furthering their connection to the fanbase - listening to ideas and thoughts, giving us a chance to say "Wouldn't it be cool if...?"
That said, I've heard it said that they probably wouldn't care too much about patches and stuff that affects only the EXE. They're debating patches and what-not too. And hell, if people want to use something like Cherry's patches, I'm pretty sure that they won't care. It's just, some of us fans might actually like to have a 'real' copy of the game, you know? As opposed to a fake one~
Hell, RTP legality~ ;P
Also, the reason they're doing this isn't anything like PR. I was talking to a few people on IRC about how nice it would be to have a legitimate copy for the older RMs - in relation to how Degica recently released some music from RM3. A Degica rep overhear/read and we talked about it a bit. They decided to ask their boss and they said they'd consider it. Word got back that if there was enough support for the idea, they'd gladly go for it and, well, things just spiralled from there.
I'd be more than happy to share the chat logs!
Except the highly rated RM2k3 games in this site outnumber the highly rated RMXP/RMVX games, and some of these games made publicity outside of the RM forums such as was mentioned, featured in various magazines/sites. Some of the best RM games I've played were RM2k3.
I like RM2k3 so I totally support this, but yeah I wish they had done this 8 years ago. I'd still get it if it was released. RMVX Ace is cool and all, but I still like my RM2k3!

Something tells me that petitions will later ask for my opinion on whether cheese being better than bacon or whether I prefer vagina over dicks because these things ask zip codes these days. Why.
Oh well, I signed it as a jihad terrorist.

So that Liberty can sign you up for random mailing lists. Get ready to receive lots of Australian junk mail!

Fuck this, I'm signing.
I'll buy it since I've been using it for 10 years, plus I like Liberty so...

Here's the thing: I don't have anything against the program, even if it's outdated and weak. I have no reason not to want to see it legal. It didn't kill my parents or anything. It's just a program.
Decky: lol.
The chatlogs, if anyone was interested. Note that for legal reasons I had to cut some things out. I've also changed all names but my own, just in case.
***Star*** was the 'representative'
I'm Libby and the rest are mysterious~
<007> for someone to want to make your whole soundtrack for you
01 <Libby> it can cost a lot of money
01 <Libby> ...thank god for enterbrain and the RTP music, eh?
01 <Libby> XD
<boyo~> depends whatcha intentions are for your project I guess
01 <Libby> well, that too
<007> Yeah like XXXXXX isn't a anything really
<007> so I just used newgrounds music
01 <Libby> if there's a possibility of selling it or even asking doenation, then... yeah
01 <Libby> you need music that won't get you into trouble
<boyo~> for me making a custom project was like.. the whole point of making a custom project :D
<boyo~> but
<boyo~> it's 2k3
<boyo~> so
<boyo~> it's still not legit
01 <Libby> yeah
01 <Libby> wonder if you could purchase a 2k3 license
<boyo~> I don't think you can :<
<boyo~> even if you did, it's a breach of the EULA to use plugins and stuf
01 <Libby> there's a japanese veriosn you can buy
<boyo~> you'd have to use the JP version to be
<boyo~> in the clear
<boyo~> I think
01 <Libby> maybe since it's an old product you could convince them to sell you a 'this person payed and may use as they like" thing
<boyo~> that would be nice
01 <Libby> even if you've got an edited english version
<boyo~> but it might be counterproductive to them
01 <Libby> I mean, it's not like they're making money on the product anymore
<boyo~> legitmizing piracy, even at a fee, isn't gonna help sales of their flagship products :<
01 <Libby> so a coverall licence would probably rake in a bit more moeny
01 <Libby> well, but for their older software
01 <Libby> it's not like most people don't have a cracked version of the new stuff anyway
01 <Libby> I mean, how many people who use VX and VXA have the licenses?
01 <Libby> Not as many people as are making games on them
<boyo~> sure
<boyo~> but it's not like
01 <Libby> it's not like they'd be condoning piracy
01 <Libby> since it's already occuring
<boyo~> I don't think they plan to accomodate piracy D:
01 <Libby> giving peopel the chance to pay for the older prodcts would help though
01 <Libby> since then they'd be at least a bit more legal
<boyo~> it would probably be cool
<boyo~> but I don't think a company would do it
01 <Libby> you can't tell me that if they offered you wouldn't take it up
<boyo~> I'd only be interested if it let you do whatever you like with it
01 <Libby> if they said - here, pay us 30 and we'll let you used RM2k3 like it was ace...
01 <Libby> well yeah
01 <Libby> a cover-all licence
<boyo~> including things that would break the eula for ace or vx
<boyo~> if it were that
<boyo~> like using that tileswap thing
<boyo~> is a breach of vx's eula
01 <Libby> that way they could make some money back from all the sales they missed out on with the program
<@***Star***> they still get sales for 2k3 and 2000 Value in Japan
01 <Libby> well, a coverall license would acknowledge that yes, we know you had to go to extremes to get it in english, yes, we know you've probably messed with the actual program itself to do so, but here, we don't mind as much since it's an old program
<@***Star***> they just never supported it for ENG
01 <Libby> we'll forgive you since we didn't make it available to you all at the start, but hey, you still need to buy a license
<boyo~> I just reckon that it would be a bad move for them, people who might have bought ace would just buy 2k3 licenses
<@***Star***> you can still buy 2k/2k3 legally <:3c
<@***Star***> but it's going to be japanese
01 <Libby> that's why I figured a cover all licence would be nice
<@***Star***> tbh I don't think eb! lost a lot of sales at all
<@***Star***> since
01 <Libby> like: yeah, you got a copy that is translated to englush
<@***Star***> people still buy IGM
<007> Not many in the english communiuty bought that
<@***Star***> yeah
01 <Libby> we understand that you had to cheat to do so, here, pay us and we'll fogive you
<@***Star***> actually no
01 <Libby> XD
<@***Star***> 007
<@***Star***> I'm referring to the english sales
<@***Star***> I saw the graph :X
<@***Star***> and was surprised
<@***Star***> cover all license sounds a bit...iffy that means all RTP is available for you from rm95-RMVXace
<boyo~> there's always a catch with everything
<@***Star***> and they have this habit of reusing the RTP from a maker
01 <Libby> No
01 <Libby> I mean, cover for each maker
01 <Libby> so one for 2k3, one for 2k
<boyo~> like construct classic is more powerful (for non rpgs) than rm, igm, and maybe GM too... Plus you can use it for free commercially.. but you need an outdated direct x 9 distributable to run the games :<
01 <Libby> like, coverall in the term of they don't mind that it was translated to english or that you use cherry's edits
01 <Libby> for that one program
<@***Star***> that's against the EULA
<@***Star***> if they're going to do that
<@***Star***> might as well make rm2k/2k3
<@***Star***> open source code
01 <Libby> I know, but it would be nice for the older programs
<@***Star***> which could hurt them
01 <Libby> or even just for the english version
<@***Star***> with that you're going to put potential future sales into trobule
<@***Star***> since if it's open source code
<@***Star***> al ot of people can copy the code and improvise it
01 <Libby> okay, so here's an english version. You're covered only if it's a translated version with no add ons
<@***Star***> and make their own engines out of it
<@***Star***> libby with that you're pretty much saying go ahead and hack our program
01 <Libby> even that would be awesome
01 <Libby> no, just translate it
<@***Star***> it's still hacking
<@***Star***> the program
01 <Libby> if people want to hack it, nothing will stop them anyway
<@***Star***> yeah but at least you can sue them
01 <Libby> but being covered for an english translation would be nice
01 <Libby> just a translation
<@***Star***> it's still iffy
01 <Libby> that said, they could just make their own patch
01 <Libby> and sell it
<@***Star***> I'm seeing it from an abusers standpoint
01 <Libby> abusers will abuse anyway
<@***Star***> yes but at least you can still throw the law against them
01 <Libby> and allowing just a translation cuts everything else off
<@***Star***> allowing just a translation means showing off the code
<@***Star***> which is terrible
01 <Libby> no edits
<@***Star***> it's still going to happen
<@***Star***> to translate
<@***Star***> you have to make sure the font fits
<@***Star***> etc.
01 <Libby> or, again, they could release their own patch for it
06 * @***Star*** translated programs before
01 <Libby> and sell it
<@***Star***> 2k3 is outdated though
01 <Libby> people would buy both the Japanses version and the patch
<@***Star***> it doesn't work on some win7/vsita programs
01 <Libby> but it's still very widely used
01 <Libby> works fine on mine
01 <Libby> >.>
01 <Libby> <.<
<@***Star***> yes but not everyone
<@***Star***> I know YF doesn't
01 <Libby> most
<@***Star***> Diamond couldn't
<@***Star***> I can't play rm2k games :I
01 <Libby> and wouldn't it be better to have it paid for?
01 <Libby> to at least have the option?
<@***Star***> if it was "in public demand"
01 <Libby> otherwise people can only use it via piracy
<@***Star***> degica might consider it :P
01 <Libby> when they would have been happy to pay for it
<@***Star***> the problem is mostly money
01 <Libby> it's like being forced to pirate because it isn't there to buy
<007> Well it'd be nice in the sense of
<007> a lot of cool RM2k/3 games are out there
01 <Libby> it's being forced to have been hacked, too
<@***Star***> it is there to buy
<@***Star***> just in JP
01 <Libby> in englosh
<007> and it would be nice to put it out there in the RM forums
<@***Star***> and Eb said it before
<@***Star***> I even saw the page
<@***Star***> please don't pirate 2k3
01 <Libby> star
<@***Star***> we will translate it into english
<007> and not be like "IT WAS ILLEGUL, YOU CAN'T POST KEWL GAMES HERE"
<@***Star***> but the eng audience didn't listen
<@***Star***> so eb ditched the idea
01 <Libby> when?
<@***Star***> it was looong ago
<@***Star***> :V
<@***Star***> I will find the page again
01 <Libby> I don't recall such a thing
<@***Star***> once my net stops bitching
<@***Star***> but it did exist
<@***Star***> it was on their old site
<007> No one even heard of it
<@***Star***> it was when 2k3 was newly released
01 <Libby> if it had been put up among the RM sites it probably would ahve been a great thing
01 <Libby> people would have listened
<@***Star***> it shows how much the eng audience back then paid attention to the official publisher
<@***Star***> hey EB said it themselves they're going to translate it into english
<@***Star***> (didn't bother to check the main site)
01 <Libby> Because back then they only focussed on the Japanese side of things
<@***Star***> (translated it by themselves)
01 <Libby> I didn't even knoe they had an Englush site until last year when Ace was released
<@***Star***> it was protexis before
01 <Libby> and I've been in the RM internet community since 98
<@***Star***> degica is the new publisher
<@***Star***> they started ENGing
<@***Star***> RMXP days
<boyo~> I think somebody showed me that page you know.
<@***Star***> boyo~ the 2k3 into english one?
<boyo~> the page where it talks about english 2k3
<@***Star***> I remember it was posted in rmn
<boyo~> yep
<@***Star***> yeah
01 <Libby> I don't remember it
<@***Star***> yeeep
01 <Libby> >.<;
<@***Star***> 8'D
<boyo~> just ***Star*** said
01 <Libby> I'd have been all over that if I had
<boyo~> nobody took any notice of it :D
<boyo~> I only saw it last year
<@***Star***> exactly :D
<boyo~> not back in the day
<@***Star***> it shows how much the eng audience cares for getting it legally
01 <Libby> most of the ENG community didn't know about it
01 <Libby> you know, seeing as the site was only in english... during XP?
<@***Star***> yeah
<@***Star***> that's after the 2k3 drama fest
<@***Star***> they just decided to publish xs themselves
01 <Libby> well, how were they supposed to know?
<@***Star***> THEN
<@***Star***> postality knights came in
01 <Libby> if it were in japanese?
<@***Star***> and then that's where the REAL fans of RM came in and siad
<@***Star***> THESE SCRIPTS WORK ONLY
<@***Star***> IN
<@***Star***> OFFICIAL RM
<@***Star***> stop using postality knights
01 <Libby> I have no idea~
01 <Libby> XD
<@***Star***> I had been in the XP days
<@***Star***> I saw it ALL
<@***Star***> ALLLL
<@***Star***> xD
01 <Libby> If I could buy an english translation for RM2K/3 I would
01 <Libby> That money would appear out of thin air and into their bank accounts
<@***Star***> besides it's too late for rm2k3 now
01 <Libby> XD
<@***Star***> if the revive it
<@***Star***> that means they have to add
<@***Star***> support for it
<@***Star***> and patches
01 <Libby> well, there's still a lot of people who use it
<@***Star***> which they don't relaly have right now since they're focused on the new makers
01 <Libby> so
01 <Libby> they can't complain about pirate/hacked versions of the old makers then
<@***Star***> they don't
01 <Libby> I mean, they can complain, but they need to understand
<boyo~> ***Star***
01 <Libby> yeah
<@***Star***> they already complained and even said
01 <Libby> I know
01 <Libby> just posting it out there
<@***Star***> but it's still their property
<boyo~> How the fuck does Pisces constellation even remotely look like a fish
<@***Star***> and you CAN buy it legally
<@***Star***> just not in english
01 <Libby> still, I prefer some of the old versions
01 <Libby> that's the main issue
<@***Star***> but it doesn't mean you CAN'T buy it
01 <Libby> in japanese
<@***Star***> so they can still complain since it's against their TERMS AND CONDITIONS
01 <Libby> which most english can't read
<@***Star***> which is a contract
<@***Star***> and
<@***Star***> like what others will say
<@***Star***> language barrier
<@***Star***> isn't a good excuse
01 <Libby> it'd be the most used one though
<@***Star***> it's like how JP doesn't understand english copyrights
<@***Star***> they still get sued
01 <Libby> Now, I bought the new makers because i love them
<@***Star***> the same hting goes to ENG 2k3 users
01 <Libby> I'll always love 2k and 2k3, and might use them
01 <Libby> but I don't ahve them legally
<Cute Babble>
<@***Star***> I will ASK degica
<007> Well honestly
01 <Libby> :D
<007> I think RMVX Ace is nice enough
<@***Star***> if they can try to put in 2k3/2000 Value
<@***Star***> in ENG
01 <Libby> yay~
<@***Star***> I did thought about it
<007> but yeah 2k3 in Eng would be great
<@***Star***> but then yeah
<@***Star***> the points I said
01 <Libby> people do still use the engine
01 <Libby> a lot do
<boyo~> can you ask them to request a revision of the EULA :D
<007> At least to be legally used and stuff
06 * boyo~ gets shot
<@***Star***> it's mostly compatibility
01 <Libby> it's easier and doesn't require scripting to use
<@***Star***> and the bugfixes
<@***Star***> etc.
01 <Libby> also, it's a charming engine
01 <Libby> and there are some things it does right that VX and VXA don't
01 <Libby> like the mapping layers -.-
<007> I think if they allowed 320x240 maps and 16x16 tiles in RMVX Ace, then we wouldn't really have had this issue so much.... actually it still would because it's STILL missing some things that RM2k3 had
<007> >:U
01 <Libby> why'd they have to mess with the mapping layer?
<@***Star***> actuall
<@***Star***> y
<@***Star***> I would hate 320x240 maps
<@***Star***> and 16x16 in vXace
<boyo~> I think we're just all stuck in our ways
01 <Libby> true
<@***Star***> and I would kill EB
<@***Star***> if they did tht
<@***Star***> *that
<007> I mean as an option
01 <Libby> I don't mind the sizes as much
<boyo~> 2k3 displays at double res by default anyway
<007> not as a ONLY thing
<@***Star***> IGM had that ;_;
<boyo~> so doubling sized resources
<@***Star***> yeah
01 <Libby> but, I do wish they hadn't messed with the mapping layers
<boyo~> would be exactly the same
06 * Libby is stuck on this point forever
<007> RMXP's mapping was fine
<***Star*** asked someone higher about it and they said they'd put it out there and that they'd have to get an official translation>
01 <Libby> it would be great to see
01 <Libby> an they'd be making some money back on a program that is still used now
<007> Though they're gonna waste money on translating if they do
01 <Libby> instead of missing out on a market
<007> or at least resources
<@***Star***> but yeah
<@***Star***> my boss said it himself
01 <Libby> they could use a fantranslation
<boyo~> sucks to be a plugin user :<
<@***Star***> if there's enough interested
<007> if they do fan translation, then that might be ok but they'd have to contact whoever did it which I think was
<@***Star***> they're
<@***Star***> going
<@***Star***> to
<@***Star***> publish i
<007> whats his phylomortis name
<@***Star***> t
<007> :3
01 <Libby> :D
<007> Yeah that'd be cool
<@***Star***> RPG advocate
01 <Libby> yess
<@***Star***> I'm not counting on it though
<007> If they do
01 <Libby> his was the best one
<007> I would actually buy it
01 <Libby> yes
01 <Libby> same
01 <Libby> definitely
<007> and I could go back to using it
<@***Star***> I'm still not counting on it though
<007> :D
<@***Star***> haha
01 <Libby> nevermind that I don't use it as much anytmore
<@***Star***> how many 2k3 users are out there right now
01 <Libby> I'd still buy it
<007> instead of using RMVX Ace for legal reasons
01 <Libby> lost
01 <Libby> lots
<007> There still are some
<@***Star***> some
<007> in fact, I think some just switched over for legality reasons
<007> like me
<@***Star***> but yeah
<007> but if it were legal again
01 <Libby> you've got people who have lots of old projects
<007> I'd be right back :D
<@***Star***> he'll bring it up with eb
<boyo~> problem is that almost every single 2k3 user uses some sort of patch or plugin
<@***Star***> exactly what boyo~ said
<@***Star***> that's
<@***Star***> against
<@***Star***> the eula
01 <Libby> maybe, if we spread the word and have a petition signes...
01 <Libby> not me
<boyo~> without being allowed to use plugins, there's no point really
<@***Star***> that would help eb change their mind
<boyo~> for me :<
01 <Libby> no patches or plugins
01 <Libby> Maybe the glyph one
01 <Libby> >.<
01 <Libby> forgot about that one
01 <Libby> that's one area where XP+ excell - icons
01 <Libby> icons<2
<@***Star***> hey hey
01 <Libby> <3, even
<***Star*** asks about if a petition is made would EB! reconsider and got a positive answer>
<@***Star***> it's going to be a poll
<@***Star***> so you guys better vote
01 <Libby> yesss~
01 <Libby> (I was thinking more one of those change pages)
01 <Libby> that way we could all share the link on facebook and whatnot
<@***Star***> ok
01 <Libby> :D
01 <Libby> change.org
<@***Star***> also 007
<@***Star***> tell it to MD
<@***Star***> I'm sure those guys would love it
<@***Star***> http://forums.rpgmakerweb.com/index.php?/topic/1605-if-we-were-to-release-rpg-maker-2003-in-english-would-you-buy-it/
<007> k
<boyo~> :<
<boyo~> I wonder how many people will answer without knowing the eula thing
<@***Star***> I should bring this up
01 <Libby> http://www.change.org/petitions/an-official-english-version-of-rpg-maker-2003-eb-to-release-an-english-version-of-rpg-maker-2003
01 <Libby> could we use that too?
<@***Star***> it mght be better to vote on the official site
<@***Star***> but
<@***Star***> you can post that too I think
01 <Libby> yeah, but use that as a way to spread the word
01 <Libby> I'll edit in a link to that topic
<***Star*** lets them know about the petition and he says to put the amount at about 1000>
<@***Star***> yeah you can use the petition
01 <Libby> yeah I am
01 <Libby> editing a few things~
<@***Star***> but change the amount to 1000
01 <Libby> doing
01 <Libby> it also automatically ups once that amount is reached
01 <Libby> so if it reaches 100, it changes to 200, then 400...
<@***Star***> yeah but it has to be 1000
<@***Star***> minimum
<@***Star***> so people have a good idea
<@***Star***> how many votes are needed
01 <Libby> but I'll add in
01 <Libby> yeah, I got it added
01 <Libby> just gotta add link and save~
01 <Libby> http://www.change.org/petitions/rm2k3-in-english
01 <Libby> ya-ha~
<@***Star***> someone
<@***Star***> post the news
<@***Star***> in rmn
<boyo~> I'd be all for it.. if it meant me and Windychan could treat XXX as an "indie game" :P
<boyo~> but we can't anyway
<boyo~> it uses DynRPG
<@***Star***> you can pretend you didn't use add-ons
<@***Star***> not like eb will sue your asses off anyway
<@***Star***> people used that
<@***Star***> tileset editor
<@***Star***> which is an external program
<@***Star***> in vx
<boyo~> yeah
<@***Star***> and nobody got sued
06 * @***Star*** wink wink
<boyo~> hmm
<boyo~> well I still wouldn't wanna sell it, just in case (not that I was planning that anyway but.. you know what I mean)
<boyo~> that said.. there's worse things out there
<Babble out>
<@***Star***> oh man I get excited for you guys
<007> I really want RM2k3 legal
<007> I'd hop right back on it and make XXX there
<007> :D
<007> without worries!
<007> and XXX remake
01 <Libby> Posted on SW
<007> and then feel all in control of my game again :D
<007> instead of "can someone script x for me D:"
<007> \:D/
01 <Libby> yeah
<007> It's not like a PERFECT ENGINE
<007> but it was really nice for those who aren't programmically minded
<boyo~> it's just what
<boyo~> I grew up with
<007> and graphically stuff
<007> and nostalgia
<007> and lots of good RM2k3 games around
<007> honestly
01 <Libby> where to pop this on RPGVXA.com...
<007> The ones rated 4 and above in RMN outnumber RMXP and RMVX games rated 4 and above combined I think
<@***Star***> 007
<@***Star***> we can make
<@***Star***> XXX
<@***Star***> sellable now :0
<007> yes :D
<007> Seee
<007> Be happy
<@***Star***> haha
<007> ;w;
<007> RM2k3's english release if it does will be the happiest day in my life
<007> lol
<007> It's funny
<007> I was working in the Library back in like 2000
<007> then my brother called me there
<007> asked for me and then was happily telling me he found a program to make RPGs
<007> I was like "No way"
<007> so I got home and got to use RM2k
<007> and then I got hooked D:
<007> and now i'm here.
<@***Star***> someone from france
<@***Star***> signed alreadyt
01 <Libby> :D
01 <Libby> let's make this happen~
<babble out?>
<007> Liberteaaa, please make this happen
01 <Libby> I'm trying as hard as I can
01 <Libby> tonight will be a search for RM sites night
<007> :'3
The chatlogs, if anyone was interested. Note that for legal reasons I had to cut some things out. I've also changed all names but my own, just in case.
***Star*** was the 'representative'
I'm Libby and the rest are mysterious~
<007> for someone to want to make your whole soundtrack for you
01 <Libby> it can cost a lot of money
01 <Libby> ...thank god for enterbrain and the RTP music, eh?
01 <Libby> XD
<boyo~> depends whatcha intentions are for your project I guess
01 <Libby> well, that too
<007> Yeah like XXXXXX isn't a anything really
<007> so I just used newgrounds music
01 <Libby> if there's a possibility of selling it or even asking doenation, then... yeah
01 <Libby> you need music that won't get you into trouble
<boyo~> for me making a custom project was like.. the whole point of making a custom project :D
<boyo~> but
<boyo~> it's 2k3
<boyo~> so
<boyo~> it's still not legit
01 <Libby> yeah
01 <Libby> wonder if you could purchase a 2k3 license
<boyo~> I don't think you can :<
<boyo~> even if you did, it's a breach of the EULA to use plugins and stuf
01 <Libby> there's a japanese veriosn you can buy
<boyo~> you'd have to use the JP version to be
<boyo~> in the clear
<boyo~> I think
01 <Libby> maybe since it's an old product you could convince them to sell you a 'this person payed and may use as they like" thing
<boyo~> that would be nice
01 <Libby> even if you've got an edited english version
<boyo~> but it might be counterproductive to them
01 <Libby> I mean, it's not like they're making money on the product anymore
<boyo~> legitmizing piracy, even at a fee, isn't gonna help sales of their flagship products :<
01 <Libby> so a coverall licence would probably rake in a bit more moeny
01 <Libby> well, but for their older software
01 <Libby> it's not like most people don't have a cracked version of the new stuff anyway
01 <Libby> I mean, how many people who use VX and VXA have the licenses?
01 <Libby> Not as many people as are making games on them
<boyo~> sure
<boyo~> but it's not like
01 <Libby> it's not like they'd be condoning piracy
01 <Libby> since it's already occuring
<boyo~> I don't think they plan to accomodate piracy D:
01 <Libby> giving peopel the chance to pay for the older prodcts would help though
01 <Libby> since then they'd be at least a bit more legal
<boyo~> it would probably be cool
<boyo~> but I don't think a company would do it
01 <Libby> you can't tell me that if they offered you wouldn't take it up
<boyo~> I'd only be interested if it let you do whatever you like with it
01 <Libby> if they said - here, pay us 30 and we'll let you used RM2k3 like it was ace...
01 <Libby> well yeah
01 <Libby> a cover-all licence
<boyo~> including things that would break the eula for ace or vx
<boyo~> if it were that
<boyo~> like using that tileswap thing
<boyo~> is a breach of vx's eula
01 <Libby> that way they could make some money back from all the sales they missed out on with the program
<@***Star***> they still get sales for 2k3 and 2000 Value in Japan
01 <Libby> well, a coverall license would acknowledge that yes, we know you had to go to extremes to get it in english, yes, we know you've probably messed with the actual program itself to do so, but here, we don't mind as much since it's an old program
<@***Star***> they just never supported it for ENG
01 <Libby> we'll forgive you since we didn't make it available to you all at the start, but hey, you still need to buy a license
<boyo~> I just reckon that it would be a bad move for them, people who might have bought ace would just buy 2k3 licenses
<@***Star***> you can still buy 2k/2k3 legally <:3c
<@***Star***> but it's going to be japanese
01 <Libby> that's why I figured a cover all licence would be nice
<@***Star***> tbh I don't think eb! lost a lot of sales at all
<@***Star***> since
01 <Libby> like: yeah, you got a copy that is translated to englush
<@***Star***> people still buy IGM
<007> Not many in the english communiuty bought that
<@***Star***> yeah
01 <Libby> we understand that you had to cheat to do so, here, pay us and we'll fogive you
<@***Star***> actually no
01 <Libby> XD
<@***Star***> 007
<@***Star***> I'm referring to the english sales
<@***Star***> I saw the graph :X
<@***Star***> and was surprised
<@***Star***> cover all license sounds a bit...iffy that means all RTP is available for you from rm95-RMVXace
<boyo~> there's always a catch with everything
<@***Star***> and they have this habit of reusing the RTP from a maker
01 <Libby> No
01 <Libby> I mean, cover for each maker
01 <Libby> so one for 2k3, one for 2k
<boyo~> like construct classic is more powerful (for non rpgs) than rm, igm, and maybe GM too... Plus you can use it for free commercially.. but you need an outdated direct x 9 distributable to run the games :<
01 <Libby> like, coverall in the term of they don't mind that it was translated to english or that you use cherry's edits
01 <Libby> for that one program
<@***Star***> that's against the EULA
<@***Star***> if they're going to do that
<@***Star***> might as well make rm2k/2k3
<@***Star***> open source code
01 <Libby> I know, but it would be nice for the older programs
<@***Star***> which could hurt them
01 <Libby> or even just for the english version
<@***Star***> with that you're going to put potential future sales into trobule
<@***Star***> since if it's open source code
<@***Star***> al ot of people can copy the code and improvise it
01 <Libby> okay, so here's an english version. You're covered only if it's a translated version with no add ons
<@***Star***> and make their own engines out of it
<@***Star***> libby with that you're pretty much saying go ahead and hack our program
01 <Libby> even that would be awesome
01 <Libby> no, just translate it
<@***Star***> it's still hacking
<@***Star***> the program
01 <Libby> if people want to hack it, nothing will stop them anyway
<@***Star***> yeah but at least you can sue them
01 <Libby> but being covered for an english translation would be nice
01 <Libby> just a translation
<@***Star***> it's still iffy
01 <Libby> that said, they could just make their own patch
01 <Libby> and sell it
<@***Star***> I'm seeing it from an abusers standpoint
01 <Libby> abusers will abuse anyway
<@***Star***> yes but at least you can still throw the law against them
01 <Libby> and allowing just a translation cuts everything else off
<@***Star***> allowing just a translation means showing off the code
<@***Star***> which is terrible
01 <Libby> no edits
<@***Star***> it's still going to happen
<@***Star***> to translate
<@***Star***> you have to make sure the font fits
<@***Star***> etc.
01 <Libby> or, again, they could release their own patch for it
06 * @***Star*** translated programs before
01 <Libby> and sell it
<@***Star***> 2k3 is outdated though
01 <Libby> people would buy both the Japanses version and the patch
<@***Star***> it doesn't work on some win7/vsita programs
01 <Libby> but it's still very widely used
01 <Libby> works fine on mine
01 <Libby> >.>
01 <Libby> <.<
<@***Star***> yes but not everyone
<@***Star***> I know YF doesn't
01 <Libby> most
<@***Star***> Diamond couldn't
<@***Star***> I can't play rm2k games :I
01 <Libby> and wouldn't it be better to have it paid for?
01 <Libby> to at least have the option?
<@***Star***> if it was "in public demand"
01 <Libby> otherwise people can only use it via piracy
<@***Star***> degica might consider it :P
01 <Libby> when they would have been happy to pay for it
<@***Star***> the problem is mostly money
01 <Libby> it's like being forced to pirate because it isn't there to buy
<007> Well it'd be nice in the sense of
<007> a lot of cool RM2k/3 games are out there
01 <Libby> it's being forced to have been hacked, too
<@***Star***> it is there to buy
<@***Star***> just in JP
01 <Libby> in englosh
<007> and it would be nice to put it out there in the RM forums
<@***Star***> and Eb said it before
<@***Star***> I even saw the page
<@***Star***> please don't pirate 2k3
01 <Libby> star
<@***Star***> we will translate it into english
<007> and not be like "IT WAS ILLEGUL, YOU CAN'T POST KEWL GAMES HERE"
<@***Star***> but the eng audience didn't listen
<@***Star***> so eb ditched the idea
01 <Libby> when?
<@***Star***> it was looong ago
<@***Star***> :V
<@***Star***> I will find the page again
01 <Libby> I don't recall such a thing
<@***Star***> once my net stops bitching
<@***Star***> but it did exist
<@***Star***> it was on their old site
<007> No one even heard of it
<@***Star***> it was when 2k3 was newly released
01 <Libby> if it had been put up among the RM sites it probably would ahve been a great thing
01 <Libby> people would have listened
<@***Star***> it shows how much the eng audience back then paid attention to the official publisher
<@***Star***> hey EB said it themselves they're going to translate it into english
<@***Star***> (didn't bother to check the main site)
01 <Libby> Because back then they only focussed on the Japanese side of things
<@***Star***> (translated it by themselves)
01 <Libby> I didn't even knoe they had an Englush site until last year when Ace was released
<@***Star***> it was protexis before
01 <Libby> and I've been in the RM internet community since 98
<@***Star***> degica is the new publisher
<@***Star***> they started ENGing
<@***Star***> RMXP days
<boyo~> I think somebody showed me that page you know.
<@***Star***> boyo~ the 2k3 into english one?
<boyo~> the page where it talks about english 2k3
<@***Star***> I remember it was posted in rmn
<boyo~> yep
<@***Star***> yeah
01 <Libby> I don't remember it
<@***Star***> yeeep
01 <Libby> >.<;
<@***Star***> 8'D
<boyo~> just ***Star*** said
01 <Libby> I'd have been all over that if I had
<boyo~> nobody took any notice of it :D
<boyo~> I only saw it last year
<@***Star***> exactly :D
<boyo~> not back in the day
<@***Star***> it shows how much the eng audience cares for getting it legally
01 <Libby> most of the ENG community didn't know about it
01 <Libby> you know, seeing as the site was only in english... during XP?
<@***Star***> yeah
<@***Star***> that's after the 2k3 drama fest
<@***Star***> they just decided to publish xs themselves
01 <Libby> well, how were they supposed to know?
<@***Star***> THEN
<@***Star***> postality knights came in
01 <Libby> if it were in japanese?
<@***Star***> and then that's where the REAL fans of RM came in and siad
<@***Star***> THESE SCRIPTS WORK ONLY
<@***Star***> IN
<@***Star***> OFFICIAL RM
<@***Star***> stop using postality knights
01 <Libby> I have no idea~
01 <Libby> XD
<@***Star***> I had been in the XP days
<@***Star***> I saw it ALL
<@***Star***> ALLLL
<@***Star***> xD
01 <Libby> If I could buy an english translation for RM2K/3 I would
01 <Libby> That money would appear out of thin air and into their bank accounts
<@***Star***> besides it's too late for rm2k3 now
01 <Libby> XD
<@***Star***> if the revive it
<@***Star***> that means they have to add
<@***Star***> support for it
<@***Star***> and patches
01 <Libby> well, there's still a lot of people who use it
<@***Star***> which they don't relaly have right now since they're focused on the new makers
01 <Libby> so
01 <Libby> they can't complain about pirate/hacked versions of the old makers then
<@***Star***> they don't
01 <Libby> I mean, they can complain, but they need to understand
<boyo~> ***Star***
01 <Libby> yeah
<@***Star***> they already complained and even said
01 <Libby> I know
01 <Libby> just posting it out there
<@***Star***> but it's still their property
<boyo~> How the fuck does Pisces constellation even remotely look like a fish
<@***Star***> and you CAN buy it legally
<@***Star***> just not in english
01 <Libby> still, I prefer some of the old versions
01 <Libby> that's the main issue
<@***Star***> but it doesn't mean you CAN'T buy it
01 <Libby> in japanese
<@***Star***> so they can still complain since it's against their TERMS AND CONDITIONS
01 <Libby> which most english can't read
<@***Star***> which is a contract
<@***Star***> and
<@***Star***> like what others will say
<@***Star***> language barrier
<@***Star***> isn't a good excuse
01 <Libby> it'd be the most used one though
<@***Star***> it's like how JP doesn't understand english copyrights
<@***Star***> they still get sued
01 <Libby> Now, I bought the new makers because i love them
<@***Star***> the same hting goes to ENG 2k3 users
01 <Libby> I'll always love 2k and 2k3, and might use them
01 <Libby> but I don't ahve them legally
<Cute Babble>
<@***Star***> I will ASK degica
<007> Well honestly
01 <Libby> :D
<007> I think RMVX Ace is nice enough
<@***Star***> if they can try to put in 2k3/2000 Value
<@***Star***> in ENG
01 <Libby> yay~
<@***Star***> I did thought about it
<007> but yeah 2k3 in Eng would be great
<@***Star***> but then yeah
<@***Star***> the points I said
01 <Libby> people do still use the engine
01 <Libby> a lot do
<boyo~> can you ask them to request a revision of the EULA :D
<007> At least to be legally used and stuff
06 * boyo~ gets shot
<@***Star***> it's mostly compatibility
01 <Libby> it's easier and doesn't require scripting to use
<@***Star***> and the bugfixes
<@***Star***> etc.
01 <Libby> also, it's a charming engine
01 <Libby> and there are some things it does right that VX and VXA don't
01 <Libby> like the mapping layers -.-
<007> I think if they allowed 320x240 maps and 16x16 tiles in RMVX Ace, then we wouldn't really have had this issue so much.... actually it still would because it's STILL missing some things that RM2k3 had
<007> >:U
01 <Libby> why'd they have to mess with the mapping layer?
<@***Star***> actuall
<@***Star***> y
<@***Star***> I would hate 320x240 maps
<@***Star***> and 16x16 in vXace
<boyo~> I think we're just all stuck in our ways
01 <Libby> true
<@***Star***> and I would kill EB
<@***Star***> if they did tht
<@***Star***> *that
<007> I mean as an option
01 <Libby> I don't mind the sizes as much
<boyo~> 2k3 displays at double res by default anyway
<007> not as a ONLY thing
<@***Star***> IGM had that ;_;
<boyo~> so doubling sized resources
<@***Star***> yeah
01 <Libby> but, I do wish they hadn't messed with the mapping layers
<boyo~> would be exactly the same
06 * Libby is stuck on this point forever
<007> RMXP's mapping was fine
<***Star*** asked someone higher about it and they said they'd put it out there and that they'd have to get an official translation>
01 <Libby> it would be great to see
01 <Libby> an they'd be making some money back on a program that is still used now
<007> Though they're gonna waste money on translating if they do
01 <Libby> instead of missing out on a market
<007> or at least resources
<@***Star***> but yeah
<@***Star***> my boss said it himself
01 <Libby> they could use a fantranslation
<boyo~> sucks to be a plugin user :<
<@***Star***> if there's enough interested
<007> if they do fan translation, then that might be ok but they'd have to contact whoever did it which I think was
<@***Star***> they're
<@***Star***> going
<@***Star***> to
<@***Star***> publish i
<007> whats his phylomortis name
<@***Star***> t
<007> :3
01 <Libby> :D
<007> Yeah that'd be cool
<@***Star***> RPG advocate
01 <Libby> yess
<@***Star***> I'm not counting on it though
<007> If they do
01 <Libby> his was the best one
<007> I would actually buy it
01 <Libby> yes
01 <Libby> same
01 <Libby> definitely
<007> and I could go back to using it
<@***Star***> I'm still not counting on it though
<007> :D
<@***Star***> haha
01 <Libby> nevermind that I don't use it as much anytmore
<@***Star***> how many 2k3 users are out there right now
01 <Libby> I'd still buy it
<007> instead of using RMVX Ace for legal reasons
01 <Libby> lost
01 <Libby> lots
<007> There still are some
<@***Star***> some
<007> in fact, I think some just switched over for legality reasons
<007> like me
<@***Star***> but yeah
<007> but if it were legal again
01 <Libby> you've got people who have lots of old projects
<007> I'd be right back :D
<@***Star***> he'll bring it up with eb
<boyo~> problem is that almost every single 2k3 user uses some sort of patch or plugin
<@***Star***> exactly what boyo~ said
<@***Star***> that's
<@***Star***> against
<@***Star***> the eula
01 <Libby> maybe, if we spread the word and have a petition signes...
01 <Libby> not me
<boyo~> without being allowed to use plugins, there's no point really
<@***Star***> that would help eb change their mind
<boyo~> for me :<
01 <Libby> no patches or plugins
01 <Libby> Maybe the glyph one
01 <Libby> >.<
01 <Libby> forgot about that one
01 <Libby> that's one area where XP+ excell - icons
01 <Libby> icons<2
<@***Star***> hey hey
01 <Libby> <3, even
<***Star*** asks about if a petition is made would EB! reconsider and got a positive answer>
<@***Star***> it's going to be a poll
<@***Star***> so you guys better vote
01 <Libby> yesss~
01 <Libby> (I was thinking more one of those change pages)
01 <Libby> that way we could all share the link on facebook and whatnot
<@***Star***> ok
01 <Libby> :D
01 <Libby> change.org
<@***Star***> also 007
<@***Star***> tell it to MD
<@***Star***> I'm sure those guys would love it
<@***Star***> http://forums.rpgmakerweb.com/index.php?/topic/1605-if-we-were-to-release-rpg-maker-2003-in-english-would-you-buy-it/
<007> k
<boyo~> :<
<boyo~> I wonder how many people will answer without knowing the eula thing
<@***Star***> I should bring this up
01 <Libby> http://www.change.org/petitions/an-official-english-version-of-rpg-maker-2003-eb-to-release-an-english-version-of-rpg-maker-2003
01 <Libby> could we use that too?
<@***Star***> it mght be better to vote on the official site
<@***Star***> but
<@***Star***> you can post that too I think
01 <Libby> yeah, but use that as a way to spread the word
01 <Libby> I'll edit in a link to that topic
<***Star*** lets them know about the petition and he says to put the amount at about 1000>
<@***Star***> yeah you can use the petition
01 <Libby> yeah I am
01 <Libby> editing a few things~
<@***Star***> but change the amount to 1000
01 <Libby> doing
01 <Libby> it also automatically ups once that amount is reached
01 <Libby> so if it reaches 100, it changes to 200, then 400...
<@***Star***> yeah but it has to be 1000
<@***Star***> minimum
<@***Star***> so people have a good idea
<@***Star***> how many votes are needed
01 <Libby> but I'll add in
01 <Libby> yeah, I got it added
01 <Libby> just gotta add link and save~
01 <Libby> http://www.change.org/petitions/rm2k3-in-english
01 <Libby> ya-ha~
<@***Star***> someone
<@***Star***> post the news
<@***Star***> in rmn
<boyo~> I'd be all for it.. if it meant me and Windychan could treat XXX as an "indie game" :P
<boyo~> but we can't anyway
<boyo~> it uses DynRPG
<@***Star***> you can pretend you didn't use add-ons
<@***Star***> not like eb will sue your asses off anyway
<@***Star***> people used that
<@***Star***> tileset editor
<@***Star***> which is an external program
<@***Star***> in vx
<boyo~> yeah
<@***Star***> and nobody got sued
06 * @***Star*** wink wink
<boyo~> hmm
<boyo~> well I still wouldn't wanna sell it, just in case (not that I was planning that anyway but.. you know what I mean)
<boyo~> that said.. there's worse things out there
<Babble out>
<@***Star***> oh man I get excited for you guys
<007> I really want RM2k3 legal

01 <Libby> Posted on SW
<007> and then feel all in control of my game again :D

<007> \:D/
01 <Libby> yeah
<007> It's not like a PERFECT ENGINE
<007> but it was really nice for those who aren't programmically minded
<boyo~> it's just what
<boyo~> I grew up with
<007> and graphically stuff
<007> and nostalgia
<007> and lots of good RM2k3 games around
<007> honestly
01 <Libby> where to pop this on RPGVXA.com...
<007> The ones rated 4 and above in RMN outnumber RMXP and RMVX games rated 4 and above combined I think
<@***Star***> 007
<@***Star***> we can make
<@***Star***> XXX
<@***Star***> sellable now :0
<007> yes :D

<007> and now i'm here.

author=NightowlDon't be too worried. I've been on that site for over three months and have yet to be sent anything from them.
Something tells me that petitions will later ask for my opinion on whether cheese being better than bacon or whether I prefer vagina over dicks because these things ask zip codes these days. Why.
Oh well, I signed it as a jihad terrorist.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

I think this is kinda cool, but I wouldn't personally buy it (I'm done with my 2K3 game and the chance of selling it is zero), so I don't feel right signing it. I don't think it's right to trick Enterbrain into spending money doing something for me and then not actually pay them for it.
I'm not part of this community, but I do follow a few folks on twitter that brought me to this.
It seems like an amazingly wasteful effort, but that doesn't really matter. Had this happened about a decade ago when it would have mattered, absolutely. Now it is basically like EB asking people if they would like to purchase some old junk they have laying around in their basement. rmBay.com???
There are legitimate points for its release to satiate peoples' hunger for reconciliation with their inner guilt. Unfortunately it won't legitimize the dreadful things made with it.

I understand, there's a lot of ill feeling about "why now?" The thing is, back then we were given a chance but it wasn't communicated properly and just blown off. Pity.
That said, here, have a story: (Written in response to an entitled little arse who asked why I was so scared of having something illegal, though he didn't think of it as illegal and that selling it would be fine even if it was illegal because "in a 10000% that nobody at japan or whatever will care about it, non asking you if you used the legal maker to make a nice game" and that "the police isn't in mood to check if a bunch of people is using a sprite in one of their product, or use a software with more than 8 " (PRO TIP: Please don't act like this, it pisses me off))
I was 15 when I first got RPG Maker 95. It was downloaded. A ROM. Pirated. Back then, I didn't care. I was a kid who found something that might let me remake the games of my youth - a program for 'free' that opened up the doors of my imagination into something beyond just playing games. Creating them. I then found RPG Maker 2000. It was a great little program, charming and I loved everything about it. It had it's issues but I learned a lot from using it - not only how to sprite, how to look at pixels and see how they fit together, but deeper things. To look deep into things like movies and games and try to figure out how they work. That program, too, was pirated and again, I didn't care. Then came RM2k3. I hated it with a passion. I didn't like the battle system at all and resolved never to use it. About 6 years ago there was a contest where I had to use the program. I was unhappy about it but there you are. I downloaded it and found it to be better than I thought it was. On it I made my very first complete game. Using it I evented animated battlers - both enemy and PC. I showed my younger sister and cousin how to use it, getting closer to her than I'd ever been through out combined love of the system (though she has since outgrown it.)
Then came RMXP. Again, I pirated it. Again, I played around with it. I hated it and was only too happy to stay with 2k3. Out came VX and again, I pirated, but something in me had changed. I'd begun to recognize the hard work that the creators had put into the programs. I still rejected VX because of the scripting. That's right, I hate scripting. Most other things about the program I didn't mind, but the scripting... Then, finally, VXA was released and I realised that I couldn't do the pirating thing any more. Not to something that I loved so much. So I deleted my pirated VX and XP and saved up to finally purchase VXA. But I couldn't work up the nerve to delete 2k and 2k3. They'd become such an ingrained part of my computer and internet life that I just couldn't give them up. Then an innocuous chat about how licenses would be cool for the older versions came up in IRC and lo and behold, someone who had the right links managed to get a hold of a Degica rep.
Now they're offering to bring one of my favourite games to legality. What can I do but ask people to respond? It's a BIG DEAL. A company is willing to listen to the fans about this. There are still a lot of people who use RM2k3. Why deny ourselves the chance to have a real copy? For years we've justified our piracy by saying "Oh, there's no English version. That's why we HAVE to pirate!" Now that there's a chance to get a legal version, you shy away? For shame!
(Please note, the anger and shaming in this isn't directed at anyone on this site.)

The overlap between people who care about RM2K3 and people who care about legality of their games is probably pretty close to 0%.
The ability to use the RTP resources in VX Ace would be nice for some people. But you can already do that with a Japanese RM2K3 license.
