FAVORITE FINAL FANTASY TITLE
Posts
Man, it's been a while since I sat down and enjoyed this place... one of my true safe havens!
Anyway... I have been playing Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection on my PSP a lot lately, and something struck me: this is the only old school FF title that got a sequel, and it was made over a decade later. Granted, it is a classic and there is an undeniably large fan base, but I am really curious as to why it reached such great popularity.
So, I was curious to see what other people considered their favorite FF game, one that may be deserving of a sequel (if it doesn't already have one), and why it's your favorite. Again, I will wait to post mine, though I will say FF IV is not my favorite.

FFVI would be my all-time favorite. (I am sure that this has nothing to do with the fact that I played the game during the height of the popularity of the SNES when I was a young impressionable teenager).
I still think that this is one of the best looking games ever made for the SNES. Pixel art ages so gracefully!

Final Fantasy VI for me as well. Not only is it my favorite Final Fantasy, but it's also one of my favorite RPGs of any series.
Oh, and there was a kind of anime sequel/spinoff to Final Fantasy V.

Make it three for FF6. That game was just fantastic on so many levels. I love the characters, the setting, the soundtrack... I can't even fathom how some people dislike the game.
I must be the only Final Fantasy fan who doesn’t love FF VI. Actually in order of favouritism it would probably be; 9, 5, 4, then tie between 7 and 8.

And, completely unrelated, but would you care for a glass of completely unaltered ice water that will not drug you into believing FF6 is the best RPG ever?
No thank you, I already have a cabinet of mind altering substances at home.
And apparently so do you.
Seriously!?

FFV I guess. I think it's just because the beginning throws wild scenarios at you "confused old man awakes from crater" "oh look a pirate ship being lead by a drag king pirate who grew up with a sea dragon" also Butz/Bartz whatever looks really rad in a flamingo dancer outfit. I never really get super far in FF games so I guess FFV's intro never getting old for me does the trick.
Sigh...Final Fantasy VII.
I'm serious. Sure, the game was completely ridiculous and made absolutely no sense, and sure, the characters were a collection of anime stereotypes, and sure, it was full of that kind of 90s grimdark misanthropic pretentious soap opera dialogue, but I loved ever second of it. There was always something new and cool happening, the plot never really dragged, grinding was kept to a minimum and the whole game was pretty much everything I loved about anime and Japanese pop culture at the time put into a blender.
But, while VII is my favourite, I admit that it is not the best Final Fantasy game. There are balance problems, and the game is quite easy to exploit. The setting was also very anachronistic, and elements were mostly put together just because they were cool. No, for an example of the series at its best, I would hold up VI; great game balance, memorable and complex cast, a story that is epic and actually does hold up to close scrutiny, a magnificent score and a ton of replay value.
...But then, VI doesn't have daikaiju:

At first I thought, "A topic about Final Fantasy titles? WTF?"
Then I thought, "oh great, another 'what's yer fave ff' topic."
Then I thought, "I'd better post my thoughts about this."
Seriously, guys...
Final Fantasy 3 all the way.

Here's the order of Final Fantasy games that I've enjoyed: (except XI to XIII, because I haven't played them yet):
1) Final Fantasy VI (Make it four. Haha.)
2) Final Fantasy VII
3) Final Fantasy IX
4) Final Fantasy X
5) Final Fantasy VIII
6) Final Fantasy IV
7) Final Fantasy III
8) Final Fantasy I
9) Final Fantasy V
10) Final Fantasy II
Actually, I hardly touched V and II. Not to my liking, apparently.
And yeah, if you notice my list, you'll see that VI is the only 2D-original Final Fantasy that is ranked in my Top 5, and at number 1 ^_^

I loved Final Fantasy V actually. Loved the job system. My next favorite is X-2. I know, I'm a heathen and I disgust the world but I can't help but like what I like!
If we are sticking to old school then FF III is right after V, followed closely by IX.

XII. It's the one JRPG I loved enough to play through twice.
I think XII is vastly underrated, as its storyline and characters are some of the best in the series.
^ Hell yeah. I was impressed by how competent the writing was for what I was expecting from an FF title. The dialogue was genuinely clever.
Everything about that game worked for me.
I liked the gambit system and being able to "program" my characters' behaviors. Sure, most of the gambits were useless, but it was fun collecting them and assessing which ones could be useful and how. (Contrast with Dragon Age where they hand you the gambits without making you work for them)
I loved how the towns were so full of life. I don't care that the Lucas influence was everywhere. It was Lucas-like but it was still Final Fantasy.
I loved the music. Of course the entire series boasts good music, but this wasn't just good, this was John Williams good. Especially the Imperial theme that repeats throughout the story, and the theme that plays in the first dessert area outside town. You go out there and the music is breathtaking, the scenery is breathtaking, and...you can explore!
Which brings me to the thing I loved the most about that game -- open-world exploration. You could go off the beaten path into areas where the enemies are too strong for you. Sometimes MUCH too strong for you, and your party gets annihilated in seconds, but you had that freedom. The game made you weigh the risk of probable death for continuing on into areas where the enemies outclass you versus the potential reward of collecting sweet loot, and I love love love when games do that. (Dark Souls, which I've gone through half a dozen times now, does nothing but that)
Then I played through XIII, which wasn't a bad game by any stretch, but seemed to be taking a few steps back after the achievement of XII. Even after finishing the demo for XIII-2 I'm not sure I want to return to that universe, whereas Squaresoft could market an empty box with "Final Fantasy XII-2" written on the front and I'd buy it in an instant. Guess I better stop now, I'm starting to fanboy out.

Damn, I'm so happy that I'm not the only one! FF VI is by far my favorite of the series. Granted, I love most of them (I still haven't beat III or VIII or played XIII), but VI just stands out in my memory the most. I think I have a similar problem to kenton: it was the first one I played, and I was VERY young and impressionable (probably 8 or 9).
Again, the only reason I started this thread was to see if there were a ton of people that love FF IV. Considering the number of times it was remade and expanded, I thought it would be the most popular by a vast margin.
Also, just to throw some garbage into the mix, my LEAST favorite title was VIII. I know that's blasphemy to some people, but I could never get into it. I only ever got about half way through the second disc, and I always struggled just to get there. I guess I felt like none of the characters were really that relate-able and the whole draw system was really strange...
But, again, I'm super glad that I'm not weird for really loving FF VI (for the record, I completely destroyed it on every platform it was released for; probably beat it several times for each one, too).
