S is for Situation
What is this?S is for Situation
This is the fourth of a series of Creative Writing exercises. There will be seven (7) topics/parts to the series, this being the first, and all are aimed at creation.
This fourth episode will focus on creating a situation.
But what is a CLOSAT?
It's a culmination of a group of different things that combine to create a story. This will be something of an experiment, actually.
Yes, but what-?
It's a surprise. You'll find out at the end, okay? ^.~
Fine, then what do we have to do?
Firstly, decide whether or not you are going to stick around for all seven parts. I'm aiming to have them done within a few weeks time, and some parts are longer than others.
Secondly, each topic will ask you to create something. This something will be used by others so don't throw out anything that you'd rather not be shared.
Lastly, create.
What are we creating?
This time, as the topic header states, we'll be creating a situation. Each person who joined previously will be tasked with making one. Just one, mind you.
You'll do this like so:
- Look behind you. What you see first will be your word.
- Using that word, create a word web* of at least 20 words.
- At the end of your web, take the last word and create a situation with it.
- Post it in this thread.
- Profit?
- I'll add my examples in the situation section.
- This Friday will be the deadline. That is June 8th.
Situations can range from creative or uncreative - whichever you like.
In this case a situation is something that causes an event or conflict or moves the story onwards. The situation itself can be an event or conflict, but it would be of large significance in the story. For example: The situation in a criminal show is usually an unusual murder that has occurred. It is usually the cause behind the story.
*A word web is a brainstorming tool where you start with one word and connect other words to it, then more others to those words. Eventually it ends up looking like a messy spiderweb. A few examples:
Once your situation is done, it will be added to the topic. This will be referenced at a later date. You don't need to add your word web, but you may if you wish.

My word: rock
Situation: A rock is thrown through an expensive window.
Word Web:

Aha, I knew it! I was thinking, "what could be next? What does that S stand for? Sssstory..? Ssssituation?"
I realised when doing this word web that all the words my brain spits out are quite vain.. Here's hoping that doesn't say anything about me as a person!

These writing exercises are so much more fun than any of the junk we did in high school. Or maybe it's that I actually care to participate since there are other people around that are genuinely interested? Hmm...oh well!
My word: machine
Situation: A machine that synthetically produces food out of almost nothing was used for years to feed the entire world but is now broken.

Word Web:

Wonder how many people we can get to have the word "treasure" in their word web. :P
Also, I love that you've joined "politician" to "blood-sucking".

I imagine most anyone who plays rpg's can somehow manage to work treasure into any conversation or word web. I know I do!
Yeah, I actually thought of politician before I did vampire as far as blood-sucking went. Haha!

What do you mean by the end of your web? You mean the last word of your web, or any word that doesn't continue the web further and we just choose which one, if it's the first one, then I have an idea, if it's the second one, I may of done it wrong.
This is too fun lol. XD

Word: Chipmunks

O.k., I found out I didn't do it wrong :3
I realize that my situation breaks the 20 word rule for this(or at least I thought it was a rule), but I was staying simple. GOD DAMN did everyone make theirs elaborate compared to mine! I need to step it up. Other than that, this was fun!

At the end of your web, take the last word and create a situation with it.
I'm guessing his last word was England. Don't sweat too much about the word you chose from the web, though, what matters is doing the exercise.
I am glad that people are enjoying this so far. These exercises are a blend of ones I did during my creative writing course a few years ago - we had the best ever teacher - and I found them fun, too. After CLOSAT finishes I'm thinking of doing a smaller series of writing exercises every now and then. It helps keep the 'juice' running. :P

This is not a word web, this is just something I want to hide here for some reason:
A stands for art, I'm guessing...but these are writing excersizes, why would the next word be art!
My wordweb blows, but I have something at least.
