WHAT IS UP WITH ALL THE NAMES PEOPLE COME UP WITH FOR THEIR GAMES?
Posts
I hate to stamp all over the "generic name generator" but.. the point of titles is to interest and intrigue. While these words have become generic alone, one must find the winning combination that will draw in the players.
For example, 'Lost Eden' is probably a pretty shit title (and is the title of a real game, actually). Sounds like you could sum up the plot synopsis in a sentence or two without even playing though, regardless of the actual game content. Definitely sounds like it's been done to death too. But 'Metronome Prince' sounds pretty cool!
Weird things are also pretty good. Adding in weirdo character names in like.. I'unno, "Mr. Dragon" is interesting. 'The Fantastic Wings of Mr. Dragon'. Who wouldn't want to play that?!
While I agree that "x Lion Claw Squad - ACTIVE SANCTUARY Princess of Lost Garden: Fantasmagoria XXI" is a ridiculous title, it is interesting and - in relation to games available - not at all generic. Could you even begin to attempt a plot synopsis from it without ever playing it?

But, to be honest, I'd play Realm of Heroes over Nosferatu Atal, because a name should be indicative of its content (and Nosferatu Atal sounds like pretentious schlock and Realm of Heroes sounds like some good ol' RPG romp).
Does this not contradict with you saying you do not judge games based on their names?
A name is a pretty good indicator of what a name is going to be like because it allows insight into the creator's thought process. The kind of person who would name their game "Sonic and the chaos dragons" or whatever is not going to be the kind of person who can weave a compelling narrative.
Well, I didn't explicitly state it, but I meant "On the subject of judging games by their names, to be honest, I'd play Realm of Heroes over Nosferatu Atal ...etc...etc.."
Sorry for the confusion.
Sorry for the confusion.
The unfortunate part of today's media overload is that most things get about 3 seconds of review before they're either chosen or skipped... and your game's main pic and title make or break that first impression.
This is just if I'm skimming though. If your game came highly recommended or I otherwise found interest in it, that plays a huge part too - and then the title is negligible.
It's probably not fair but it's true :P

Names are but labels Men put on things they do not understand.
Though, now that people are mentioning game names, Asylum of Pleasure and Pain sounds like something I want to stay as far away from as inhumanly possible.

LOL that sounds like a hentai pornfest for masochists XD
Something I've noticed is that the more a game has a crazy name or weird title it can be found easier or remembered over something generic.
Even the "Radiant Wings of Silver Time" would be easy to find in google or on this site because it's probably the only game with a name in that order.
My game is called Infection, and it's about "zombies" although it really isn't listed anywhere that it can be found with zombie genre games. This is a bad thing and a good thing. I personally like the classic title without all the addons, but if it had a crazier name like Infection, Bloody Zombies Bring Apocalypse, it would probably show up A WHOLE LOT easier in a search engine.
While just "Infection" brings up other games with that word in it.
So, that's my take on some titles, even though they might not make the name for the purpose of easier accessibility, it does help though.

I read about your game a few hours ago! It seems great, and the difficulty curve sounds perfect :)
I actually like the name though. Its short, and sure people can tell some sort of *insert evil thing here*-ocolypse is about to occur, but it made me want to check it out.
It's the same as anything else someone writes creatively. Some people are better at it than others, trained or otherwise.
"Why does your title suck?" is not terribly different from "why does your story suck?"
It's not always easy to produce an attention grabbing/intrigue building title that fits artistically with your game, even while ignoring differences in opinion.
That's assuming the dev WANTS to have a quality title.

In my defense, I planned on having the title of my current project be similar to that of the setting, at least for the time being.

I would say that this is a rather gross over-simplification. I can see no reason why a simple title couldn't fit a complex game. For instance, "Valkyrie Profile." Simple title, BIG game.
And even if the game isn't a labyrinthine work of philosophy contemplating the meaning of life (and likely ending in a final battle with God or something), there's no reason a simple idea can't be compelling. Sometimes the simplest ideas can make great foundations for games. In my opinion, a simpler story can often leave for more genuine moments and better developed characters because you're not so focused on making the game compelling.
Any who, to each his own and I might have fallen off on a bit of a tangent there, but I would be careful about such blanket statements.
I do not think I said even one word against "simple titles." *bodyslams Othello*

Apologies then, that just seemed to be implied by bashing "Sonic and the Chaos Dragons." :)
My game is Amulet of Fate. I know for a fact people will take one look at the title and walk away. A shame, but it'll probably happen. But for those who give it a chance, I'm sure the content will surprise and delight those who play it. I like to keep my titles simple and to the point of the overall story.
My current title is only a placeholder, and likely for good reasons, since it's basically contained of three words which are all overused in video game names.
"Legend of Chaos"
Yea. I'm still working on it.

I'd rather ask why protagonists tend to have fucked up names such as Zuggablargh.
I always look up some names (and their meaning, I don't want a character whose name means "steampunk grass dildo")
Yeah, that. I rarely have any issues with game titles, but some people choose the most outlandish names for their characters. It's fine and dandy if the name is unusual but rolls off the tongue well, but some names just don't. I suppose "Zuggablargh" would be a good example, though I sure hope that nobody is deranged enough to use that as a character's name.
My game is called "Picturesque", and the lead is named Cecelia. I personally don't have a problem with ridiculous game names, I find them interesting and eye catching, and only the stupidest earn my ire. The same goes for character names. I feel like just because a name is outlandish to us doesn't mean it would be so crazy in the FANTASY world it is taking place in. These places aren't our world, I highly doubt naming conventions are the same, so odd names are probably more realistic than regular names and bring the world to life better than others (unless the game is set in a modern, earth-like setting).
I mostly stick to English (and Irish and Scottish) names.
I don't really use names like "Zaneth" "Shisha(kebab)" "Yuria" and average fantasy names that just sound out of the place. Names like Sh'leye 'clyuak make my eyes bleed.
Probably the most bizarre name I have given to a character was Honeprop, but the character was anyway some menacing comic relief midget dark knight who had bad dialogue similar to Secret of the Stars

My current project is named Breach:Awakening. These two words have no significance to each other, or at least it appears that way. Within the context of the story, though, they make perfect sense. Seeing as the game page opens with a blurb from the intro about some kind of accident at an important facility, and I detail that there is demon capturing/summoning, someone should be able to put together that there is a breach in something (containment, perhaps?), and that something (that was being contained, maybe?) is waking up and that this is probably not a good thing!
My on again, off again western? "Way of the Gun"
My on again, off again cyberpunk thing? "Cybernoir" (okay, that one I kind of phoned in)
I do a lot of eye-rolling at some of the names here, and to be honest it has nuked my interest in a few games. Your game's name should be like its handshake? If your game met a bunch of other games at a party, would they all laugh about your game's name behind its back? Maybe that should be the litmus test for game name insanity.
