CloseSlender is a new free indie spookfest based around the meme of the Slender Man.
Originally conceived in a thread devoted to creating fake paranormal photos on the Something Awful Forums, The Slender Man was the most convincing of the lot. A slim, elongated figure with a featureless white face and root-like protrusions, he appeared in the background of black and white photos shortly before tragedies.
Now Hadley/Parsec Productions has used his likeness as the basis for a horror-game. Wandering around a forest at night, you're tasked with collecting eight notes about ol' Slendey while avoiding him. In the vein of Amnesia, you take damage by looking at the creature. The dim lighting and muted colour palette tend to play tricks on your eyes until it seems like anything could be him.

Am I the only one who doesn't find Slender Man all that scary? I mean, yeah, he's kinda creepy, and I'm sure the game's ambiance would get to me, but he himself? Not very frightening.

The concept looks good, but yeah, it looks more like a demo for core game mechanics than an actual game. They could add a lot more to it in terms of storyline, objectives, gameplay and atmosphere.

I agree. I like everything about the concept of the game, except the figure of Slender Man himself. Not scary at all.

Slenderman isn't supposed to be outright scary. He is supposed to be unsettling. Over time he gets to you because something about him just isn't right. He is a little too tall, his appendages are a bit too long, no face (which is what humans use to identify humans). He is supposed to unsettle you on a base level, not outright scare you.

What looks unsettling is that fact that you take "damage" from looking at him, and that's enough to make you unsettled. But a better figure would have helped.
Well, seeing how he wasn't created specifically for this game, it's understandable that the creative liberties are somewhat limited.

Any monster stops being scary if you look at him enough. That's why many horror games are starting to punish you for looking at them. Your imagination is scarier than anything anyone can put on a screen.

Amnesia: Dark Descent - case in point. Each creature is about as scary-looking as a Half-Life head crab. It's the same reason why horrors filled with jump-scares are cheap thrills, whereas truly creepy films like Paranormal Activity never actually let you see the culprit in full. Heck, even a movie like Catfish was full of tension, if only because you didn't really know what was going to happen.

Ugh, I'm baby. I was cringing throughout the whole video and it wasn't even that scary... I'm terrified of Slenderman though. Well, not him specificallly but anything scary really. Mainly because it messes with my head and I don't want to deal with a week of me thinking about scary things and having nightmares.

Meh but still you get my point.
I have to say that even though I don't find the idea of slenderman scary, this game takes it to a new low. He's just this grey mess. Looks like the world's worst golem.

Slender Man doesn't look very unnerving at all, but the environment that the game is set in does look a little eerie. I'll have to try this game out tonight.
