SLENDER.. SOME SCARY SHIT!

I haven't played this game yet. I've watched all of the videos pewdiepie has done on it, and I feel like I've seen everything it has to offer. And I agree, in this game the scares are much more about the sense of approaching doom than about Slendie himself, but the way I look at it good horror shouldn't be about the monster, it should be atmospheric and tense and uncomfortable, with those feelings assisted by the antagonist, whatever it may be.

I have to say that even though I don't find the idea of slenderman scary, this game takes it to a new low. He's just this grey mess. Looks like the world's worst golem.

Oh you graphics whores you, so silly.

@Neverm0re - Great post!

It's not really anything to do with graphical capability because the rest of the game looks fine. It's just art direction and creativity. Slenderman, the monster that the entire game is about, looks incredibly sloppy. Obviously true horror is not derived from making the scariest monster possible ( a skeleton holding a gun) but there's not really any reason for him to look like that. It can even potentially take a player out of the game with how ridiculous this grey mass that is stuck in this one pose looks, just teleporting around or however it moves. If they were trying to play around with fear of dolls or the uncanny valley or something, it didn't work.

Yeah, I agree with all that. I played the game yesterday and just couldn't take it seriously at all because of the reasons stated above. I'll admit that I'm a pussy with scary games, but this game didn't affect me in the least.

I agree with the above also, he looks stupid. They could just make him look so much better, that way the atmosphere AND the monster are both creepy.
Everything looked so nice and then he popped up in the video and I thought "wtf, he looks dumb."
Someone needs to make a game where you never see the monster, because really, after you see it the tension is pretty much gone. The fear of the unknown is what I'd like to see a game pull off.

They do a good level on Dead Space that way, you step out of the ship and it's just quit, no music no nothing, and the AI in that game is pretty good I mean they don't always pop out of the same places, so as you're walking through that silence you're just wondering where or those F&*k*$ going to pop out from. But you do see the monster and like you said after that it's pretty much okay haha
Oh I did an Let's Try of this...

EDIT - Oh I just saw that person above me linked it.

I just played this game and it's fucking terrifying. (I managed to collect 4 pages before he caught me. I didn't realize having your flashlight off makes it easier to get caught, and I let my flashlight run out of charge.)

I don't know too much about or think too much of the Slender Man meme, but if this game doesn't scare you, you're probably not neurotypical.

I played this game under pretty bad circumstances for being scared, having watched the above silly Let's Play and read about the game and seen the very silly and un-scary render of the monster, and watching the videos I've seen it's immediately baffling why anyone could be scared by this game, but actually playing the game itself with the sound turned all the way up still really really rattled me. Like I would describe myself as "shaken". It's actually scary enough that I don't really want to play it again. I actually thought to myself "I'm going to play someting less scary, like Dead Space 2".

That said, I've seen it said in the gaming press that this game is "more psychologically disturbing than jump-out startling". I couldn't disagree more. The opposite is true. There's no context to provide a psychologically disturbance, but the scares, the startles, are intense enough that playing it is a bit unpleasant. Still, I want to subject my friends to it, as an interesting kind of experiment.

I recommend if you're interesting in playing this, you play it, rather than learning more. It's free to download and play, and the more you know about it before hand, the more the effects will be diminished.

I wish the audio resources used in this game were publicly available, I'd like to use them, they're surprisingly good.

To clarify, and this deserves a double post, I actually SCREAMED at one point. I can't remember when a video game has ever made me do that before. Ever.

I disagree. The entire game is centered less around the monster (which, as many people have pointed out, isn't terribly frightening in his own right) and more around building up an overwhelming sense of dread. The game toys with you because after a while you're afraid to look around corners because you're afraid he'll be there. (Of course, he's not around the corner. He's behind you. He's always behind you.)

I actually like the monster in this game a lot. He's silly-looking, but his behavior is excellent. In most games you hear the monster roar, he sees you, and a chase ensues (or you die.) Here, you'll occasionally glimpse him off in the distance. And he just stares at you. And if you look at him again, he'll have moved just a little bit closer to you. Way creepier.

Like any good horror game, this game makes you scare yourself more than the monster does.

That reminds me of this (born out of laziness/time/money constraints than trying to be creepy):

Most of the time, I just giggled when watching this video, making a few fake screams and telling Creepy Watson to stop appearing out of nowhere.

Anyways, I laugh when watching Slender do his thing to people who dare record it, but always after jumping, but not always out of slender popping out of nowhere, but because some of the videos are so laggy, that I don't see him til' the white screen, and even then, it's just the guy screaming that makes me jump sometimes. Enough to make me shiver. *full body shiver* Then I laugh at the man or women's stupid scream. Yeah, I'm badass like that, I laugh at Slender, becuase he's not scary. FUCK YEAH!*runs out shirtless screaming: "OH YEAH!"*

To be honest, Slenderman reminds me of the Dahaka in Prince of Persia : Warrior Within.

Plus, Dahaka could beat his tiny ass any day in the week. So badass.
