THE SECRET WORLD
Posts
Anyone else trying this MMO out? I know that a few RMNers have talked about the game before, but the game still seems incredibly obscure despite being released at the start of this month.
So what is The Secret World? An MMO set in modern times with some light horror elements. You play as a member of the Dragons, Illuminati, or Templars. I think the Dragons are a made up group, but surely we all at least a little bit about the Illuminati and Templars.
Anyway, the game plays pretty much like a standard MMO but has its own little twists on the genre. There is an experience bar, but you don't gain levels in this game. Gaining experience will instead grant you ability and skill points which you can use to develop your skills with different weapons and such.
Combat is like most MMOs but, in terms of flow and speed, I find that it is most like The Old Republic.
The best part about the game is easily the atmosphere which is REALLY nice. The first leveling zone is a town called Kingsmouth and it is a blast to explore. You get to see wander the abandoned streets and see zombies munching on corpses or sometimes chasing players up and down various streets. Missions are also given to you in voice acted cutscenes just like in The Old Republic, though player characters are silent protagonists in this game.
Overall I'm really liking the experience. I wrote more on the game here: http://reviewdepot.net/2012/07/09/the-secret-world-first-impressions/
Also here's a video of someone (not me) playing in Kingsmouth:
If anyone plays and feels like hitting me up, I'm Hank "Globex" Scorpio (who is my favourite one-off character on The Simpsons?) on the Daemon server.

I've been playing this game also. I've already progressed to the Blue Mountain zone, which is the third area, I think. It's still a part of Solomon Island (same island where Kingsmouth is) and belongs to that storyline quest chain (I'm at like tier 12/18 or something like that). I play as Noelle "Phronesis" Franklin on the Grim server and am a member of the Illuminati. I've been specializing in blood magic for the healing and barrier abilities.
Anyway, I was drawn to the game because I was a fan of The X-Files series when I was growing up. The game world basically assumes that every secret society and religion and scary story is true.

How do you find the atmosphere of the game? I love the vibe that you get from Kingsmouth, it's really fantastic for an MMO. Does the eerie and immersive tone carry on past Kingsmouth?
The idea behind this game I've always thought would make for an amazing single player experience, if handled properly. Sadly this isn't that,I had access to the beta, but I never actually tried it out.
I love those teasers they made for the game though, great stuff.

Yes, the atmosphere is great. The Savage Coast and Blue Mountain are similar to Kingsmouth, seeing as they're all on the same island. This is also the only MMORPG I've played where I pay attention to the story instead of just clicking through to objectives, so that makes it stand out from the pack. I like that I have one main story quest that I've been tracking from zone-to-zone within the Solomon Island area. I imagine each area will have the same structure... A large area with multiple zones and an overarching story/crisis.
I never play MMOs but I'm REALLY excited about this one.
How hard is this game to get into for someone with literally NO MMO experience in the past six years?
Also: how sick of a 'puter do you need to play it?
Also also: Is there any PVP?

The game is easy enough to get into. However, it is not as easy as most MMORPGs I've played... I'm not talking about accessibility, but in actual game difficulty. There are many quests/monsters that are genuinely hard to kill by yourself.
Well, I've been running the game on high settings and my PC is over three years old, though it was pretty nice when I built it. The video settings seem fairly scalable. Here are the listed requirements:
Minimum System Requirements
Internet Connection: 512 KBPS or faster
OS: Windows XP (SP 1)/Vista (SP 1)/Windows 7 (SP 1)
DVD-ROM: 8X or faster DVD drive
Processor: 2.6 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo or equivalent AMD CPU
Memory: At least 2GB RAM for Windows XP / 3GB RAM for Windows Vista and Windows 7
Hard Drive: At least 30GB of free space
Graphics Card: NVIDIA 8800 series 512 VRAM or better
DirectX: DirectX 9.0c Compatible
Input: Keyboard & Mouse
Recommended System Requirements
OS: Windows 7 64 bit
Processor: Intel Core i5 3.0Ghz or equivalent
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti 1GB
Memory: 6 GB
There is PvP but it is restricted to PvP-specific zones with objectives. You can level up your character playing only PvP, I've heard. Holding objectives bestows XP/damage bonuses in the PvE world for everybody in your faction.
I wandered into The Savage Coast last night after receiving a mission directing me to go there to pursue Beaumont or whatever his name is. The first thing I ran into, which was a mere zombie, absolutely destroyed me (though I DID come close to killing it).
I can't even really tell when I am "ready" to start the next zone. I'm used to saying "time to advance since I reached the max level for this zone!" but I can't even do that anymore. I can't even go by what missions I completed since most of them seem to be repeatable.
I don't mind though. In fact I really like it because this game refuses to hold your hand at all. Everything is pretty trial and error in the game and I love it.
No idea when I'll be ready to advance to The Savage Coast. All I know is that I've been running amok in Kingsmouth for about four or five hours in total on my main character and most of the missions in and around the Sheriff's office and main streets have been done at least once.
In terms of game performance, my computer is about as old as Jude's and I run everything on max. There is only a slight stutter when I'm in crowded areas but, when I'm out doing missions by myself, the game runs silky smooth.
And last note, still loving the game even though I'm still in Kingsmouth. It just gets better and better as you go, especially once you get a taste of the story with the evil dude who is combing the island for secrets.

Gamespot has thrown up a review. Decent read, but I feel like the review came too soon. Should have waited another several days.

http://i.imgur.com/9xkV8.jpg I have a pretty cool hat.
Hahaha, that's awesome Jude. I haven't found any hats yet, only glasses.
And what's up with your low health? I know you're further than I am by a zone or two, but you have several hundred less health than I do! Are you setting your character up as a glass cannon or for heals or something?

author=UPRCDPS and healers generally have low health. 2k-2.5k is common, while tanks tend to have 6-7k. I have grouped with one 1.6k health DPSer, which was an aggravating experience. He would get one-shot by many of the bosses. While that type of damage is 100% avoidable, boss fights are lengthy enough that people will make mistakes sooner or later and generally survive those mistakes with 500+ HP, but not that guy. And being a man down drops DPS quite a bit, and most boss fights have a DPS check so things start to get pretty hectic as they grow in power. But yeah, I am a healer, and while my health might seem low to you I am capable of soloing every world boss I've encountered.

Either way, I can't play right now because my GPU gave up. Waiting for a new one to be delivered on Monday.
I was keeping an eye on this one since I first heard it announced, but at the moment I only have 10GB a month bandwidth on my internet so I can't really download anything big until I upgrade it after my free six months. :(

You better get on top of that! The Secret World is definitely one of the most interesting MMOs to come around in a while.
Well, my replacement GPU has arrived and been installed. It's my first DX11 video card so I get to try out a few new bells and whistles. I took this low-angle screenshot to highlight the detail DX11's tessellation feature adds. You can actually see that the ground is rocky, rather than it being a flat texture with some bump mapping.

I played the beta. It's not a bad game... But my laptop is absolute lag on the lowest graphic setting... So, as much as I like this game, def. not playing it.
I went out and purchased this. It tells me I'm below the minimum settings (it must be my complete lack of a graphics card, as I'm on a desktop PC with a fast processor and a lot of RAM), but I managed to play anyway on the lowest graphic settings. It looks really neat, but my girlfriend makes me want to wait to play with her and considering there's a lot of art and layout work I want her to do...yeah. Also I'm a bit re-addicted to Fallout: New Vegas right now.
Anyway it wouldn't let me on the Daemon server. : ( It didn't say that it was "full" but it did say that I couldn't create a character on it. Weird!
So I'm in the "Leviathan" Dimension. Louis "Nehemoth" Crowley. Haven't really started playing yet, though.
I also kind of want to get an actual fucking graphics card, because right now this game looks approximately worse than Deus Ex 1 on my computer (Hyperbole), and is probably going to lag/crash anyway; I haven't left the hub area yet so I don't know how bad it will be.

I wanted to play this one, but my computer couldn't handle the beta builds. I'm probably gonna hold out for Guild Wars 2, but the ideas in TSW are really cool. I might check it out after it is developed a bit more.
