MMO

first off let my say, i dont know what forum this would go in but this seemed like the best.
with that out of the way, has the thought of making an mmo ever cross anyones mind?
and if so anyone know of any mmo makers or design programs?

The only MMO makers around are complete garbage, and to make one is a massive task that requires not only a great amount of forethought, but a lot of money to host, and so fourth.
Not exactly your ideal indy genre.

I wonder what the appeal of repetitive grinding is, nor why someone would want to make a game that consists mainly of "fight and gain 300 monster drops from a particular enemy who drops it 1% of the time".
Yes, people have thought of it and are working on it.
I'm building my own editing tool, distributed server system, and game engine in and of its own.
To make something that would run efficiently, you'd really need a programmer to build every aspect of the game. The servers would have to be optimized and ideally work on Linux and with some kind of database system, ideally, Oracle, from what I've heard from friends who actually work for MMO's.
And someone was pointing out the other day that I should be building a messaging queue, which makes everything I did with all my threads, processes, multiplexing, and forks to this point utterly pointless -- a message queue would be way more ideal.
But yeah. You have to know a LOT in order to build it. Graphics, networking, OS-related coding, compilation, security, resource-building...

The appeal of MMOs is lost on me, I admit. I mean, I am very careless and dismissive of stories in RPGs, but I need some progression and closure.
Make and finish a regular RPG before attempting an MMO.

I'll let you guys know why i find mmo's appealing, you see, i love to play them and i figure it would be cool to make one to see if it could become popular and if it was fun to play
"If" it was fun to play? Now, what are your plans to actually make an MMORPG fun? Please don't tell me 9999 monsters, 999 maps and 3209464 classes/abilities.
Well, if you're dead set on making an MMORPG for some reason or another, check out this site.
http://random-battle.com/about/
It has a few articles on the design of MMORPGs, the failings and successes of some, and so on. I haven't read it to its entirety yet, but there were some interesting posts there. Then there's the parts like raiding or "I got a new MMORPG I'm trying it out" types of stuff that I don't care for.

Not sure on any around but i do know that it takes a lot of hard work to create one. I wish you luck if you do choose to continue with this.

The average MMO today is pretty garbage (Including WoW). I'd have left the genre already if it wasn't for AoC, which has a fairly fun combat system and player vs. player.
I have and also I found a software called Eclipse very easy to run using a Hamachi Server it will lag a bit but it will do the job how ever I quit to work on my single player game's.

My friend is a GM for Funcom on AO/AoC and the amount of demand for AoC is just through the roof. He hasn't had a weekend off and recently sent me a "hack" for AoC and asked me to decompile/understand how it works. (decompiling would've cost them money, but I gave him a short blurb about how it worked and how they could solve the issue)
Funcom really likes to make things new and innovative -- their MMO's will always bring something new to the table. I think innovation is very key to MMO's now. WoW set a bar for style and making the last kind of generic MMO -- but I don't think it's going to allow for many MMO's after this that are just kind of "generic."
My five cents at least.
And for the record, Eclipse, Player Worlds, etc, etc, are all pretty lame -- they'll work fine for a small number of users and you can customize them -- but it won't be a true MMO -- more like an ORPG (which still isn't bad, but you won't have the same distribution or be able to make money off of it)
The big problem with MMOs to me is how hugely they miss the point. MMOs are an example of a perfect opportunity for real, honest-to-goodness roleplaying in video games, but none of them has even attempted that from what I've seen.
Part of the problem is that it's pretty highly dependant on community, and that's not something that's as easy to herd as numerical stats and experience and suchlike. And the larger a community gets, the less possible it is to easily control.
As it is, I think Dungeons and Dragons Insider's toolset is going to do a much better job at that sort of thing than MMORPGs have, though with only a handful of players at a time. Which is probably better anyway.
Still....it would be nice to see a game where you really could roleplay in a persistant environment with events actually happening all the time--especially if they could be initiated by players rather than having to be scripted. Maybe someday an MMO company will figure it out. Maybe it's just a question of getting enough processing power.

I don't think it's a matter of computer power -- I think it's a matter of Human power and the right universe. If there were enough dedicated GM's always participating, we'd have a truly unique RP experience.
One of the things I liked about MUDs were that it was common to find more immortals than players. So big RP events could constantly go on.
What needs to happen is have a cached set of data that can be updated constantly and records of when the user was last there. It'd be very cool to have a lot of stuff dynamically generated and as time passes, the universe/world expands. It'd be cool if villages could start being built, villages burnt down, and so forth. For that, I suppose there may be a need for more processing power...
But in the end, if there was server-side content that was distributed in real time as players access the areas, with constantly working GM's (and many of them), we'd have a real winner.

I once had an idea for an MMO cross my mind. But then, I realized I can't make it and the only reason I wanted to was because I want to see one of the kind. That is, a Viking MMO based on Norse mythology. (This doesn't exist, does it?)
Anyway, recently I've had an idea for a game with online features. Not an MMO, but a shooter with a matchmaking system and whatnot.

It's called Age of Conan. Look it up sometime.
what about trying to re-create a mud? like i used to play a game called realms of kaos. well i kinda still do and i know it has some decent what would you call it.. hmm i think it would be like a GM and his little co-gm's who would host events for certain ocations or just come on and host a random event. i know what yas mean though. like i remember years ago when i started playing it yeah, ppl were roleplaying and the were actually some good quests and what not. but now its like idk bc i left it kinda years ago hahaha..
but like me i want to learn VX more and more especially since im deployed for 7months ill have the time when im not working on nething important and on free time. and i was kinda thinking bout revamping that game by like making it graphical and offering it to the GM's of that game and see what they thought about it. i mean hell the game is running off of txt only. pretty much a chat room now to lots i bet. yeah theres descriptions for each block you enter. but i think it got kinda boring...
what you guys think?

It's a nice idea -- but if you really want to offer them something, then you might as well be giving them PlayerWorlds or Eclipse. Those are honestly, probably the next best thing compared to MUDs. Maybe they could use animation or something else, if they don't have it already... But various feature enhancements would rock. Sometimes I consider doing some -- but then I remember it's built in VB and want to vomit and run away.
I suggest learning coding to begin with and maybe looking at C#. It's free and pretty extensible. If you learn something like SDL, you could presumably make something that runs fairly efficiently.
Just my thought on it, though.

hahaha i was walking from my living space to my desk like 7mins away and was thinking about the MMO i was thinking. and i figured this. maybe ill just create the first main town.get it outta the way. set it up make it look pretty & neat. without no events, functions, cause effect, etc. and just show the DM of the MUD and see what he thought. if he liked it id start from there. just make the map for a start, to get a lay out then spend time in each village/town/etc and what not. be a slow process but in the end. it could possibly work. i think my hardest challenge wants i get all that done whether it takes me a yr or so to do this or not. would be to actually figure out how to launch it as an MMO lol. hahaha.
it wouldnt be a waste of time that is for sure. bc in the long wrong i would gain alot of knowledge on the pros and cons of making a game.
8) in turn id still be a happy looser 8)

This and I hate MMOs and I don't find them enjoyable anymore. It's too repetitive, boring quests just PVP here and there.
