I didn't get a cell phone until my senior year of college, and only because my father was very ill.
I don't use mine much at all, but the company still gouges me with ridiculous rates.

My job as a constantly mobile member of the military pretty much means I have to have one. Not literally legally, but talking to my family while I'm SOMEWHERE ON THIS EARTH, stuff like in case the command needs to contact me, and general handy shit like communication with friends. I almost wish I could have the 'live off the grid fuck phones' approach but that is literally not feasible.
If you actually do want a phone service that's truly global, I recommend a satellite phone. Iridium is the most robust. I used one during a hectic 2-year period and never had any problems. Price is a big concern, however, as satellite phones aren't nearly as cheap as cell phones yet. I am not too familiar with Navy stuff, so if you are considering a satellite phone you should probably check with your ship's security guys to see if there are any opsec concerns about transmitting a private signal while on the ship.
Yeah that is my biggest thing. I'm not deployed often enough to primarily use a satellite phone but at the same time when I do deploy, which is every 1-2 years, it'll be for 6+ months at a time where I won't be using my cell phone either, so I still need to use my regular phone. Cell phones for travel are still handy for continental travel, which I do quite a bit of, but when I deploy I'll suspend my service and look into alternatives.
And yeah then there's OPSEC so I'll have to ask around how to handle satellite phones while underway.

That post makes me imagine both of you guys in some Metal Gear-esque codec conversation.

See I might as well go ahead and say it; I don't really get this mentality. Most people have no claim to living a spartan lifestyle, they're fine with cool gadgets and programs for their computers, cool features for their gaming systems, and even stuff for their cars and shit, but cellphones are automatically "TEXTING AND CALLING ONLY I DON'T NEED ANY OF THAT CRAP." It's one thing if you aren't interested in extra features that cellphones have, but to denounce them? Odd.
The only way I can take a statement like that seriously is if you have a similarly spartan outlook for your other electronic appliances.
author=RaveYou can only get farting apps on phones? Well heck, then where did I get up to date weather forecasts, currency and unit converter, GPS, radio player that plays stations from all over the world, and flashlight? I better take my phone back and complain to them that I'm missing my fart sound apps.

I was referencing to the fact that you can easier find farting apps or other useless apps (and there is literally thousands of them!) in Appstore/Google play and other markets like Cydia, than apps that are actually useful.
And I have JME app for unit conversion (and currency), JME app for flashlight, 6151 has also built-in radio and GPS functionality is useless for me as I don't have car (I work close to home and for remote places I have to sometimes visit, public transit is enough).

I used to have the MGS codec sound for when I received texts. I had to get rid of it because sometimes I'd just be sitting in silence reading a book or something and it'd go off and scare the shit outta me
I don't have any minutes on my phone because I wasted most of them...you won't believe this when I say this...on a fucking ringtone, about a year ago.
I haven't been able to add minutes on the phone for years, and I think it also needs to be charged, because the last time I used it I believe the battery went dead. It's one of the older cell phones, with a camera on it.
If I can remeber what it is, it's a Tracfone, and I think it also could go on the intenet...which cost minutes, and I only used it for my ringtone.
Monster by Skillet. It was worth it.
