LOOKING FOR EXPERIENCED AND TALENTED SPRITERS / SCRIPTERS / COMPOSERS / GRAPHICS PEOPLE FOR KICKSTARTER PROJECT

Hi. I've been working on my game for a long while on my own, and I have reached a point where I can't do all the work on my own, basically because I need things like custom graphics, help with scripting, and original music and I realize I am not going to get them for free. I am a writer by trade, and my main focus is on making my game, ExXception Draft, an amazing story for gamers to one day play through and find it a worthy experience. And I am looking for people who are interested in contributing to a project which I will soon be marketing on kickstarter.com, to get it to the point where it is ready to pitch, so if your work is good enough, through this experience we could be working together long term in which case you’ll be getting repaid for your investment with a contract/job, whatever you want to call it, by being a part of the working team. So basically, this is a try-out situation, for both of us.

The overall feel of the game is a mixture of cyberpunk and paranormal elements, so you can get an idea of how much room there is to work with and how much cool stuff you can do with it. The story is there, though, it’ll come through strong in the gameplay, you can read all about the idea behind the game on my tumblr at http://exxceptiondraft.tumblr.com/

What I need to get the demo ready for kickstarter is just a few key pieces of the game, including:

Action Battle Sprites - I'm using blizz Action Battle System, and I need sprites of my main character with various weapons, and animation sprites of the weapons firing, as well as the projectiles they are firing. It is a modern game so this means guns, shotguns, grenades, and your basic rocket launcher.

Action Battle Sprites for a limited number of enemies, to begin with. With a minimum arsenal, to begin with. Nothing too fancy.

A couple of fancy title screens and an opening animation for the start menu.

A few custom tilesets and custom items.

A song or two to set the mood, and...

...wha’la. We have our demo.

So, if you’re interested, contact me and we’ll work out the details and then I can send you more on the specifics of what I’m looking for.

By the way, I just made this story trailer for the game. I am hoping pretty soon I'll be able to make a gameplay video with what we create together:
I don't think you are prepared to Kickstart your project idea.
I will give you the same advice I have given many, many others.

If you're serious about this, here's something I advised someone in your position to do a while ago.

If you want to take the short-cut route - and let me tell you, it's not much of a shortcut, but hey! it's freer than paying someone to work for you - try making smaller games, helping others out with their projects, doing some of the small community contests and learning what you can. You'll get your name out there and if people know you they'll feel better about helping you.

Of course this can backfire quite a bit if you don't have the better connection that getting to know others over a longer period will give you. Of course, just because you are close friends with others doesn't mean that you'll get a finished product out of all of your work. Some people don't like taking orders and like to be in charge, some may disappear for a time and others may just not care as much as you do about the project you're creating or create problems among the team. Sometime things just go wrong and you're left with a project that you can't finish because you don't know how to do whatever the other person was doing.

This is why it's important to cultivate your own skills.

Your skills are your selling point when it comes to creating a team, and the more skills you have (or more skilled you are in one area), the more likely it is that others will take you seriously enough to consider aiding you.

It's not just mapping, spriting or scripting, either. There's music and sound, the other graphical areas (like battlers, faces, resource management and menu design), story/plot/character development/script-writing and gameplay.

Of these the written areas are the least wanted, whilst the graphical and (in the case of XP and VX) script side of things are the most valued. Mapping and sound tend to fall between, depending on the game, though music can sometimes be just as sought after as graphics. This means that you'll find a lot of people who are willing to write the story for you, but not as many that will do the full soundtrack or create original graphics - especially when they have no reason to believe that you will actually release the game, as they don't know you or your track record.

The graphics and scripting/systems are the tangible things that people can see and are usually the first thing a person looks for when they check out a project. It's what gets people excited for a project and actually look at the story. Sometimes people will overlook this if they know the person who is making the game (for example, I would play anything made by Lysander, Kentona, Strangeluv, Legion, etc... because I know that I've enjoyed their previous games before and don't need to look at the graphics to know I'd probably find any others of theirs enjoyable.) Most of the time, though, if someone wants help they will show them something that will draw that person to the project.

It's not enough to say that the story is wild and the character designs are amazing. You have to show them that they want to be a part of the project. Usually this is done with a well-presented topic, filled with pictures of characters and areas, some sprite work and maps, a concise but well worded explanation of the story and characters, perhaps a few tunes or a small trailer so that people can get a taste of the game and decide whether or not they want to be a part of it. Of course, being know helps, but a lot of people will respond well to someone who seems to know what they are doing and what they need.

You need to sell your idea to the public, make connections, prove that you're dedicated to game making in general and your own game in particular and learn how to do things so that if something does fall through with one of your team, you can pick up the pieces so that the rest of the team doesn't just leave.

And I'm all over the place with this but hopefully you've learned a few things. :P
Also, I'm pretty sure that the Blizz ABS is for non-commercial use only. If you wanted an ABS, you'd have to code your own from scratch.

...wha’la. We have our demo.

honestly, you're everything wrong with kickstarter and the game community in general. man, this post just makes me rage so hard, but it would be like blowing up at a literal infant.
Seriously, I am not everything that is wrong with kickstarter and the game community in general. But thanks.

So, in the spirit of always trying to improve myself, I've updated my tumblr page because I realize it didn't sell the game well enough. It kind of just threw you into the middle of it. I guess I'm more of a lone gun and you have to market yourself if you want to get people's attention. So, I'll try to do that more. I think people may have misinterpreted this call for artists as 'I don't have anything done yet' but that is absolutely not the case. I have done a ton of work on this game, I have tons of maps finished, tons half finished, and the story, though epic (please don't tell me not to be too ambitious) is well underway. Maybe check out that tumblr again: http://exxceptiondraft.tumblr.com
I don't post everything I produce, I have more screenshots and stuff, but I really do need these things I'm asking for to finish the demo. I work on this game everyday, and it is pretty much become my life.
I'm not going to do this half-assed, and I'm not even thinking of posting the kickstarter for a month or two. But I am busy working. No, I don't know anyone on the forum, but I hate being the person who keeps asking for stuff because that's all I ever seem to post, is to ask for a sprite or to figure out a certain issue with a script. I am doing the rest on my own, and think I'm doing a pretty good job.
If you do good work and I use it in the game, and the kickstarter gets funded, you will be reimbursed. So, I know my style is kind of eccentric, and I am kind of all over the place as far as writing... I do have a clear vision and I will keep the game on track.

Irregardless, you're not ready for kickstarter yet.

Put together your project, get some material together to show us, sell people on your product and maybe someone here will be interested in helping.

Right now you have an idea and a list of demands. Not exactly making us trip over ourselves to sign up with you.

Hey now, hey.
How would you feel if it was your first time doing something and someone called you "what's wrong with the world"?

Come on; it isn't fun to be personally insulted by anyone. If your post is just to say something derogatory, then why post it at all? It's not on-topic anyhow, unless posting about experiences of past-frustration counts.

theneonheart, I would help as your idea sounds intriguing; however I do agree with Liberty that you're not quite ready yet.
Maybe follow some of the tips she, as well as several others, have posted though? There're some very good points that might aid you.

Basically this man.. And really you're a writer and you came up with the title ExXception Draft? Though I can't say much considering I had a game called Dragon's Tear, then again I'm no writer.

This topic really strikes a cord with me, but only because I'm doing the complete opposite to what you're doing neonheart.

I don't think anyone would take a major risk with helping you when the basis of your appeal revoles around "Help now for free, get paid by kickstarter later". It's not a guarantee that you'll even reach your target, once it fails you'll have a lot of people to answear to. There are a number of factors to consider as well, the average backer is more likly to contribute to commercial projects than freeware games, behind the basis that why on earth should someone donate $5 when they'll be able to get it for free later, which is the bare minimum reward requirement when it comes to most indie games on Kickstarter.

For someone making thier first game I find this really strange behavior, but not too surprising either. You see all these amazing projects getting crazy amount of funding and not surprisingly everyone wants to get in on the act, because it gives them more or less false hope.

In a way, harsh as it may sound. I actually want you to get your project on Kickstarter but it'll be more out of morbid curiosity than feel good support.
you don't even need money to make your dream come true. You don't need custom graphics or fancy scripts. If you really think your writing is actually worth shit, then make the damn game. Some of the best RM games have terrible graphics and gameplay held together with fucking event duct tape (tm).

there's this thing called "post-production" if you want it presentable.

Plus for a Kickstarter to actually work, the project needs to be known big time before even making the Kickstarter.

Kickstarter does not advertise for projects. It houses them. It's up to the people to get it known. If you wait to advertise for it only after you start the Kickstarter, you'll not have enough time to get your initial goal, if any at all because they would just then be learning about it.

Reason why all the name-brand, top Kickstarter projects were semi-famous if not super famous to begin with.

My Amusement Park Project, I don't plan to do a Kickstarter until the Facebook page has 100,000+ likes. You see? We gained an additional 907 likes yesterday alone. You just need to advertise properly before hand, and do the majority of the work beforehand or you'll be getting shit for results for a shit-based Kickstarter thinking it had what it takes to be up there with the big dogs.
... And so, the little fledglings dream of making the big money was crushed.

The End
I just found nothing useful in what you said. I'm still looking for anyone interested. Feel free to PM me or contact me through my websites:

Your Kickstarter will fail. Don't focus around it if you have any bit of brains. Need I spell it out for you?
As someone who does graphic work (and music and scripting), I wouldn't take you up on this. We'd only get paid on the meager possibility that this succeeds? Pass. I'd much rather be working on my projects, rather than having some arrogant "idea guy/writer" bossing me around. I don't work well with those types.

Edit: Particularly with a title like "Exxception Draft" and a scheme where resource artists/coders/musicians only get paid if the game is funded.
First off, you are going to need to shell out some cash, out of pocket. I'm hoping to fund an RPG as well and one of my biggest goals is to have a playable demo to go with my campaign that demonstrates not just the tone and style of the game I intend to make, but also that I'm personally devoted to the project. In turn, I've spent around $250 so far on custom music and a unique sprite sheet from a professional pixel artist. I'll probably wind up spending another $250 before I launch my campaign.

I understand very well the burden of financial limitations, but if you expect people to invest in your project you need to come to the table with professional grade products, and you're not going to get that with volunteers. There are certainly people who do this for free that can put out professional grade work, but they're already busy doing their own thing. If you look hard enough you can find affordable (enough) contractors out there. But you're kidding yourself if you think you're going to get the quality you need on a "pay you if we succeed" basis.

Also, perhaps I missed it, but are you planning on making the final game in RPG Maker? If so, you may want to reconsider the Kickstarter route. RPG Maker is an excellent tool and can make some great stuff, but RPG Maker games are hard to monetize. I am making demo in XP but I am going to be switching to an engine that can publish to the mobile markets. People aren't going to give you money if they think they're just funding your hobby. And as powerful as RPG Maker is, that's how it's viewed on the wide scale. As a hobbyist plaything.

None of this is to be discouraging, but you really need to be realistic going in. If you're not you'll invest time and possibly money into a project that's doomed to fail.

Oh, and I agree, change the name. "Exxception Draft" really does inspire a roll of the eyes and I don't imagine that's what you're going for here. Just drop an X.
I posted a trailer with some gameplay on my tumblr here:
ExXception Draft Gameplay Trailer

I'm probably not going to do a kickstarter, but I could still use help with some sprites, so I'm still looking to see if anyone is interested. I'm taking a really long-term approach to the project and I am probably going to release the game in a number of volumes because the story is quite large, and I don't work well with deadlines and my whole thing is kind of 'open world' in more ways than one. I do have the long term story plotted out, but I'm taking the scenic route to get there. Kind of like the X-Files has the mythology plus the cases the agents take along the way. My original idea was to have a private blog where I post updates about what I'm writing plus to give out t-shirts and pins and stuff for the kickstarter, and just ask for a small amount of money, but I'm not sure if I'll be doing that now. Still, I need to get some artists involved, so I'm still looking for spriters/animators and musicians.
