NEWBIE MAKING THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO

Hello!

I'm new to the forum. I'm a university student, and I love RPGs. My favorite game is Final Fantasy 7.

I'm developing my first RPG. It's called The Count of Monte Cristo, and it's based on the novel of the same name. The story will closely follow the events of the novel. For those of you who don't know the plot of Monte Cristo, it's about a young sailor named Edmond who is framed by three conspirators and wrongly imprisoned for 14 years. After escaping from prison, Edmond seeks revenge against his enemies. Gameplay will simply involve exploration and dialogue. It's my first time using RPG Maker, so I want to keep things simple. Here are pics of three of the characters:

Edmond - The hero

Mercedes - Edmond's fiancee at the beginning of the story. Later unknowingly marries Edmond's enemy Fernand.

Fernand - Loves Mercedes. Frames Edmond, then marries Mercedes.

If you'd like to see more pics, please visit the official game page.
Welcome.

Those look pretty cool, and I'm a big Dumas fan!
Thanks sbester. I'm also a big Dumas fan!
Edmond has an awful young face for a beard like that.
FlyingJester, I appreciate your feedback. It's because RPG Maker's character generator is a bit limited. I tried giving Edmond an older-looking face shape, but the beard graphic wouldn't fully cover that face shape. I'm hoping players will suspend their disbelief :D.

I was of the impression that Mercedes wasn't necessarily tricked into marrying her cousin. It was more like, she was overcome with grief, and Fernand was the only comfort she had. Would she have done differently, were she not led to believe that Dantes was still alive? Uncertain.

Oh, right. Welcome to RMN! Share your creativity with us!

*Edit: I liked the movie that starred Richard Chamblerlan better than the book, but, that's just my opinion.
Wow, those are some pretty nice face sprites for having been made with Ace's built in generator! Most of the faces people make in it look terrible, but yours look alright for the most part.

You should submit a game page once you have enough material to put something up.
I loved the Count of Monte Cristo movie. It was great. I tried reading the book, but man, what a slog. Didn't get very far.

Welcome to RMN!
Thanks Marrend, OmegaHunter and kentona.

Marrend, I think the same thing about Mercedes. I don't think she would have married Fernand if she knew Edmond was alive. I haven't seen the movie with Richard Chamberlain, but I'll watch it soon.

OmegaHunter, thanks. I tried to make faces that looked unique and convincing. I wish Ace's Character Generator had more options. I'll definitely make a game page in the future.

kentona, did you watch the 2002 movie with Guy Pearce? I liked that one. I tried reading the unabridged version of Monte Cristo and I found it to be a slog. I recommend the abridged translation by Lowell Bair. The pacing is much, much better.
yes, I did (I had to check because I don't know who Guy Pearce is offhand). I knew it had Jim Cavaravlelzeleliel.
Cool. Lol if you purposefully misspelled Jim Caviezel's name.

I liked that movie. But I didn't like the changes they made surrounding Mercedes and her son Albert. In the book, Albert is Fernand's son, not Edmond's. The fact that Fernand had a child with Mercedes fuels Edmond's desire for revenge. Also, in the book Edmond does not reunite with Mercedes. He enters into a relationship with Haydee, a young woman who was also wronged by Fernand. I think the book's plot is more both more dramatic and more realistic.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

In a movie, the hero always gets the girl.

Seems odd to take a story with a reasonable amount of action in it, and convert it into a game with no battles.
Thanks for the feedback LockeZ. I can only think of two action-packed moments in the novel: Edmond's escape and the kidnapping of Albert. And there are no battles. Edmond never fights any of his enemies.

You might be thinking of the 2002 film. The film has two scenes in which Edmond and Fernand fight.

I am a bit concerned about the fact that my game lacks action. However, the novel also lacked action. What really hooked the reader was the suspense. I'm hoping that will happen with my game. After all, Death Note, the anime, also lacked action. Yet it was a great show because of its suspense and clever dialogue.

Another reason why I don't want to have battles is because it's my first project, and I want to focus on less gameplay elements. Perhaps my next project will be The Three Musketeers. The Three Musketeers is also a Dumas novel and has a lot of action.

The way Edmond chooses to exact revenge is rather calculating. I would think that being in his shoes, watching your prey fall into your well-laid traps, would be the game's hook. Not the action sequences.
Welcome!

The Count of Monte Cristo was one of my favorite books when I was younger, so I'm looking forward to seeing how your project turns out!

Have you ever read The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester? It is basically a proto-cyberpunk retelling of Count of Monte Cristo.
I agree wholeheartedly, Marrend. I definitely want the game's revenge subplot to hook players like the novel's hooked me.

Another thing I liked about the novel is that its characters have realistic emotions and personalities. Edmond's expression of pain and anger really resonated with me because it felt like something a real person would feel or do. I hope that players will feel touched while playing the game and become emotionally connected with the protagonist.

Thanks, Killer Wolf. I hadn't heard about The Stars My Destination until now. I'll check it out. The Count of Monte Cristo is my favorite novel. And I'm a fan of science fiction and cyberpunk settings. Also, Alfred Bester must be cool 'cause he wrote the original Green Lantern Oath :).
Intriguing.
Good luck and welcome to the site!
Thanks, Clareain_Christopher. :)

That's true. Count of Monte Cristo would make a good strategy game. You could collect resources to get upgrades of various types, but instead of a base or an army, you'd be building a plan.
