SHOULD YOU MAKE A DEMO FOR YOUR FIRST GAME?
Posts
I'm making my first game, and I was wondering whether I should have a demo or not, what are your thoughts?
There was a topic about this recently, could look for that.
But yes, you should definitely have a demo available. It will get you more feedback in the long run, and it helps to have something people can play and get the feel of the game.
Just don't take harsh or any criticism personally, like don't quit your game because people might not like it or it's too buggy. That's why a demo will help you, so you can know from the get-go and not waste a lot of time.

Honestly, I'm going to say no. Your first game should just be you getting familiar with whatever you're working in. For lack of a better word, prototype game.
The first game should just be the test game that hones your skills. The second game is when you should say to yourself, "okay, time to show the (RPG Maker) world what I can do!"

I’d say go for it. Even if it’s not that good (and honestly whose first project was?) you’ll eventually get some advice on how to make things better. You can learn a lot by failure and most people here generally try to give constructive criticism. We’re not all jerks here.

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Well I kinda assumed he means "first released game" not "first file he created in RPG Maker"
But yeah, your game will be way better if you can put it out there for more experienced designers to see, and let them pick apart some of the problems with it and point them out to you. They will see things you don't, and they will know better than you what is worth fixing and what isn't. Basically, your goal with a first game demo (with any release of any game, really, but far moreso for a first game demo) should be to try to get as many people as possible to tear it apart and tell you how to improve.

Yeah I think you definitely should. You can only gain from uploading a demo. You can be a really smart guy, but when you’re working a game or a new idea, you still need someone to give you a fresh perspective on a few things. You could end up making a lot of progress but heading in the wrong direction.
A demo doesn’t have to start from the beginning, just show off some ideas or characters that you’re working on, and see how people respond. If you want to upload the first 20 minutes of your game where shit all happens, don’t bother. It’s just to get your head straight and you know what’s working and what isn’t. But if you’re worried that everyone respond badly to your demo or something, just take your download down, nuke your game page and call everyone a faggot.

I meant I don't know how I can put the game on there, not I don't know how to submit a game.- I figured it out.
i am wondering this too. the game is only going to be about 3-4 hours long total, if that, and i could probably breeze through it in two. is there a need for a demo?
(fwiw it's not really my first game, just my first game in a while. i feel like a nub, though.)

If the game is short, it kinda depends how deep those 3-4 hours are and how much time and effort you're putting into making them. The part of my game I've finished so far is a little over an hour long, and I've easily put more than 500 hours into it over the year I've been working on it. Meanwhile I know other people have churned out 3-4 hour long games in a single week. I don't think those guys need to release demos as they go, but I hope that even if my game only ends up being three hours long, you can understand why I want feedback as I go. (It hopefully won't only end up being three hours long, though, unless I scratch 75% of my ideas.)
My answer would be No, why? Because a demo is a demonstration of a given product being sold. Seeing as your game will be (I'm assuming) freely available there is no logical need for a demo.

A demo has a different purpose here. It's to give a taste of what's to come, if your game has enough of a following, but mostly to get feedback from more experianced developers on the game while development is still ongoing and it's easier to change things. Constructive feedback is always good, and a "demo" should be made whenever a considerate ammount of it is needed.
Obviously the sarcasm regarding the misinterpretation of the term "demo" by the RM community was lost somewhere along the way.

Yeah, that's true, it's really a public alpha build, not a demo.

do other people feel this way?

I absolutely don't. Unless your game is popular, or you 're some kinds of professional, a demo/beta is necessary. If people can't playtest your game, they won't really know how it really plays like. Thus, they won't be able to give accurate feedback and you would never know what 's wrong with your game.
Especially for your first game, if it turns out to be garbage, people will tend to avoid your next game. Heck, even AAA games need to release Beta version first, like BattleField 3, SOCOM 4, Uncharted 3, ect.
