I’ve personally received a sickening amount of death and rape threats for the extremely few times I’ve surfaced here (My personal favourite is ‘how often did you have to suck kentona’s cock to get that piece of shit on the front page’). Although you could argue some of those events were sparked by other factors, and the threats were just a convenient touchstone. Which still doesn’t exactly help matters any. I’m sure it must be a daily occurrence for some other female members.
Anything of this nature that occurs on this site should be reported to staff immediately. This kind of behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

I saw an interview w/ a female game developper once, and there was a gamer guy who said something kind of similar to that. Only, it was a game for little girls, and the man said the game was basically shit/ it shouldnt count as a real game.

1) Acra, I'm really sorry and that's horrible. Holy shit. There's never justification for that kind of treatment.
2) This is a really, really good point. From experience, whenever an article pops up that discusses misogyny within a game or the industry at large, inevitably some ne'er-do-well will claim, "Males suffer from stereotypes too! What about us?" This is, without a doubt, a moronic statement that does nothing but distract from the conversation or even encourage more misogyny. Just because a completely different problem exists doesn't mean the first one isn't important. We as a community should deal with them BOTH, but this is a diversion tactic and adds nothing to the topic at hand (misogyny).
Imagine you go to donate $100 to the Red Cross to help victims of Hurricane Sandy, but someone says, "Why are you donating $100 to the Red Cross? Don't you know there are people suffering from cancer?" or "There are kids in Africa who are starving, why are you treating them so poorly?" There are a lot of problems in the world and we have to deal with them one at a time - yours probably isn't more important than anyone else's. It's a terrible strawman-esque argument.

You may be right but it still acts as a reminder of a perspective that is often overlooked, and I think that's healthy in a way. The subject of "misandry" is not brought up too often on its own and even when it does is often dismissed as just more "misogyny" anyway... If you want to tackle both issues you can't keep them apart completely.

Also, the issue I have with this issue is that "solutions" to it seem to be making the assumption that diversity == genitalia you're sporting. That's almost as bad as the assumption that diversity == colour of your skin, and that somehow having a white person, a black person, an indian and an asian (or whatever) will automatically make the opinions, ideas and viewpoints of the group more diverse. Having more vaginas or a more even ratio of vaginas to penises in the industry doesn't guarantee anything will change.

I haven't been harassed for being a female online or in gaming but then, I don't play multiplayer shooters like a good friend of mine does. She says that shit happens to her all the freaking time, so she just doesn't bring up that she's female. I'm not saying you should HAVE to keep your gender to yourself, but don't ask, don't tell, seems like a decent policy to me.
Any harassment I've suffered has mostly been immature, stupid insults that children fling about on the internet to everyone. Whether the people doing it are 14 or 40 is irrelevant to me. They act like children, I'm going to treat them like children. I block 'em, mute 'em, etc.

I agree with kentona and KingArthur on this one; I didn't mean to give the impression that we should just force more diversity into the games industry. That would be treating the result, not the actual problem.

Getting death threats for talking about something you believe in means you're doing your job right. If you ever stop getting death threats, that just means you're no longer an effective activist.

I never said it justified it or could ever negate something so cruel, but that it was still an issue. You can't say "sexism" and then assume it's only about females because that's - oh hey - sexism. What happened to you and countless others was horrible, yes, but that doesn't make it all about women. There are still men who suffer from sexism too.
This doesn't mean I agree it's correct to be sexist towards women either; I think it's equally horrible to discriminate against either gender. What I'm saying is that it's an issue which affects us all.
To expand on the death threat thing, it's not just women that get death threats: it's pretty much every major celebrity. It just so happens that there are certain insults and putdowns that work better on women such as the threat of rape or sexist remarks (eg. getting back in the kitchen), so when a big female gamer/whatever comes along then people can much more easily grab at insults and I think the sexist ones are the ones which are most memorable. Because they're very offensive.

If you count "Die in a fire" as a death threat, I've gotten death threats for:
- promoting feminism
- arguing against feminism
- speaking clinically about feminism without taking a side
- being american
- thinking drugs are bad
- thinking prohibition wasn't necessarily a bad idea, just executed poorly
- not being an atheist
- talking enthusiastically about game design
- beating people at super smash brothers
- saying gabrielle is hotter than xena
- thinking ff9 is better than ff10
- making puns (by far the most common cause)
So I don't really think death threats by themselves are really noteworthy. I'm still alive and so are you, so they were clearly just hyperbole and not actual threats. Don't make such a big deal out of things.

The great unspoken fact that everyone thinks but no one says - people love being offended, so they seek it out. It gives you righteous indignation, which feels good. It also gives you sympathy and support system. There's like no downside to it.

The downside of getting offended is that you come across as bitchy (and get death threats, apparently). The downside of my mindset is that once I offend someone, I tend to not backpedal and therefore I just keep on offending them more and more.
