WHAT MAKES YOU PLAY AN RPG MORE THAN ONCE?

I replay games for nostalgia. Also, as I've become more interested in game design, I'd re-play the older games just to experience and analyze the presentation, gameplay, etc. but only for titles I've enjoyed in the past (same standard fare, FF games, CT, SoM).

I also replay games, as mentioned above, with lots of options, customization, and class systems. FFT was heavily played, Diablo II, Phantasy Star Online, and the Elder Scrolls games to name a few. Also to a different degree, I have played FFXII a whole bunch, because it's a great game. It feels open but the story remains linear. You can play your characters in a different way each time, but they are still very strong personalities. Etc, etc.

I'll replay a game if it was enjoyable to play (playing to completion in the first place generally denotes this), and if I feel that there is much more for me to experience. I like things like hard, hidden bosses, optional quests, and powerful equipment that can be obtained early, but is difficult and not typically done on the first playthrough.
If I play a game all the way through once, chances are I will play it all the way through five times.
Getting there once is the hard part. I'm just way more comfortable with what I know, which, sadly, means I don't play many new games.
New to me, rather.

Alternate endings I could care less about. Optional customization is great. Throwing too much on at once is eh. I think that's the mistake that FE9 made somehow. But those things don't make me replay a game. Nostalgia? It's not really that either. Sans the older pokemons perhaps. I just... I know the world, I know the characters, and it doesn't seem so foreign. That's probably redundant. Whatever.
Length and alternative paths are the major factors in me replaying an RPG. The longer the RPG the less likely I am to ever play it again. The more alternative paths there are the more likely I am to play it again.

There's really only been a few RPGs I've replayed from start to finish. However there are many I have restarted multipler times. The ones I've played through more than once are Vampire Bloodlines and Deus Ex. Both were short enough to replay and also had action elements making it fun to play. And while both were a bit linear they had loads of alternative paths to take (playing Vampire as a Malkavian or Nosferatu changed it a lot)

The games I've restarted a lot are the Fallouts and Arcanum, where I tend to start up to try out a new character, play for a while. Then forget. Then when I come back some ages later I restart it again because I can't remember what I was supposed to do.

My ideal RPG would be a multiple-path two-hour RPG with loads and loads of character builds and meaningful choices.
I've restarted Baldur's Gate II about a dozen times. I've never gotten past halfway, though. :(

This describes me exactly:
"I tend to start up to try out a new character, play for a while. Then forget. Then when I come back some ages later I restart it again because I can't remember what I was supposed to do."
That's a good question, well my fav rpg would either be earthbound or ff8, and I have beaten those games many time's. I can't really give you one thing about them that made me want to play them again. only to say that there stories are very well done.
And it brings back childhood memories. But I will say that I hate multiple endings.
Because I want to be able to experience everything that's in the game the first time around and not feel like I missed something, or should have done that this way, and to me that's kind of a cop out. Think about it, if you allow the player to decide which way the story is gonna go, then that tells me the developer does not know how to create a great story, and instead is going to let me decide. maybe it's just me but I hate that.
Like any other games, i play crpg more than once to upgrade my skill level with it. I pass FFVII in solo/low level mode, FFVIII in low level, etc... also the history helps, but i love improving in gameplay.

CRPG aren't like mario, are very long, but also i play over and over to play better. When more strategic are CRPG more you would to "replay", i think. FFIV is a game i would play some times, but its too limited, you cant improve a lot, i like games like FFV, FFVII, etc... where the gameplay is more depth.

I know that many people think as videogames like movies of one use(specially the rpg with their storys and cg), but i think this is a casual view of the videogames.

For some reason, I really, really hate alternative endings. I am weird that way. Even time I finish a game with an alternative ending, I feel "insecure" that what result I had wasn't the "real" one. Yeah ... I am strange, nonetheless, what makes me want to play a game again is a world with tons of details and optional side quests that I might have missed in my first run through.

I am exactly the same way. Fortunately, most (if not all) RPGs have a "canon", official ending that takes precedence over the rest. So our fears are eased.

As for replaying an RPG, if it was a good game, I'll replay it. That simple.
I play rpg games more than once if its easy and fast to beat. When I play rpg's I play to murder the game. Meaning I will play every minigame to get the best prices, I will find every secret dungeon or item, and I will make sure I get aleast to lvl 80+(in all characters). By then I play it so much that when I do beat the game Im tired of the game.
So if the game is easy to play and theres no secret anything, I might play it again.
I'm not really sure how to explain it. But games like Star Ocean 2 I have played over 12 times and STILL once and awhile play it.

Perhaps it was because it was the first real time battle system I ever played, or the mutiple endings, or maybe it...wow I can't really explain it.

It was just fun, something I never seen before...a game I spent a lot of time with, that's why I hold memories of that game, and play it over and over.

some RPG's have that "spark" like FF4, Earthbound, Star Ocean or even Zelda. It's just fun to play. :)

... Oi, I was going to say the same thing. :|

But yeah. I'm one of those persons that doesn't really like to replay RPGs unless I forget the storyline. Exceptions for this are Star Ocean 2, just because it's... Well, it's just enticing enough, Zelda games, since I've actually beaten Ocarina of Time twice and Twilight Princess twice (And the final boss? Ooh, I can't count that high!), and... Hrm. Y'know, I should play Legend of Legaia again. That was fun.

I'm currently playing Earthbound. Nice game. Also, I need to get SMRPG. Because I'd just play that every week. :3 Kingdom Hearts... eh. I played it once, didn't want to redo it. I redid the KH2 just for the awesome factor, since most of the bosses were beautifully planned. Star Ocean 3 failed me, though. Never finished.

So, yeah. Basically? It's the number of pluses that a game has in the whole storyline, battles and all, that most likely attract me to replay.

... Speaking of which, I should probably cry that I'll never fight against Larxene in KH2's final mix. ;-; That battle would have been love at first sight. Also, the other two would have smitten me. Speaking of WHICH! Maybe I should make saves for each of the best KH2 battles, seeing as I love to go over them.

... I'm ranting too much about boss battles, aren't I?
Yes you are.

Boss battles are second nature because they die so fast. You only remember them if they have owned you enough times.

Like Demyx in KH2. ::)
Well one game series I NEVER get bored with is the Zelda series...
Something about a kid going against all odd to save the world is somehow fascinating and intriguing
if there's an element for a game that makes it replayable, it's either a) the story, or b) the gameplay. you're not going to play through a game twice because it's got a sweet soundtrack, or because it's got sweet graphics. you play through it to relive those awesome moments in a game. IE, Aeris dying, fighting Wiegraf, flying the Big Whale, turning your thief into a ninja for the first time, taking your first step into the Dark World, using your first Esper... righteous moments, man!

It's those sorts of things that hook me and make me want to play through and experience the game more than once. Personally.

now, if its an online game like Diablo 2 or something.. that's a totally different beast. I don't particularly find the story or gameplay to be too enthralling. but there's something about collecting loot and making your character AWESOME that just makes you want to grind and destroy millions of monsters.

Aeris d-d-dies...?? :'(

Diablo 2 succeeds in having the Asteroid Effect - that crazy desire to clear a level over and over and over and over and over....

Or those moments in Phantom Brave that make you love the game despite the horrid awfulness of the battle system. Especially those that make you cry~

Yes, I cried. :|
I'm not the kind of person who like to replay a game, especially those lengthy games.
But the kind of game that people would replay, I think it's mainly because of the
Multiple endings (secret endings), amazing story and of course the game secrets that you haven't found already the first time you finished it.

there are other factors too like music, characters, battle and stuff like that.
But nowadays, Story would be the most enticing factor. (Games with movie scene and all that)
I think that the main draw back for a player is the promise of a strong plot and a need to see if they can do even better on the next playthrough. Think of it as crossing the re-watching of your favourite film with the urge to hit level 99 (or 999 in disgaea!)

Personally I have probably played FFVII about 11 times. Once through in a single marathon sitting with two friends who had never played it before and wanted to know what all the fuss was about, and even once just using Enemy Skill Materia and no other type as part of a challange. Chrono Trigger 4 times (5 when it hits the DS!) and Final Fantasy 4 mor times than I can count!

Interestingly, some games have no replay value, but promise an endless single game experience. Pokemon and Disgaea are examples of this, where to reset is to be mad given all that you invest in the game. On the opposite we have Breath of Fire V however, which expected you to do it again and again just to finish once . . . that was one annoying game!
I thinks the reason for play a game more than once its beacause its addictive, funny, good story and its depend more in what people like.
