"Can art be games?" is an interesting way to put it. Both videogames and art are different and good for different reasons. I am happy that a museum was able to see the art value of videogames, but that doesn't mean videogames stop being videogames and start being art.

Videogames are in their own class. People can see art in them (besides the music, writing and graphics) but they are still videogames, and that's good, it's a good thing. They don't need to be something else, art should not be seen as better than videogames and vice-versa, they should be seen as different things that we all can benefit from. But I'm still happy that more people saw the art potential in videogames since it's there.

That article from Sophie was writen by someone who knows nothing about art. Didn't like it very much, also Final Fantasy X-2 and Kingdom Hearst 2? *puke* but that's just me.

It's satire :P She's kidding.

Whether game are art or not is a silly debate to be having at all. Things aren't either "art" or "not art", just like something can't be universally "science" or "not science", and the two are not exclusive. It's all based on personal perception; if you think of something as art, it's art - but if you don't, it's not to you.

Here's an example. Music has long been considered an art form formed from the creative and expressive sides of our minds. However, there is an unbelievably large scientific and specifically mathematical basis behind music theory. Chord formation, the Circle of Fifths, and much songwriting in general follows algebraic formula. So, while music is almost always considered an art, it'd be inaccurate to say that music isn't also a science.

Similarly this applies to programming, which has long been considered a science by the public (the typical degree is a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science). There are simple formulas that apply to writing code. There are certain steps that should almost always be taken, given a certain situation. But there's no one right way to code, and if your program works, it works, regardless of the formulas behind it. There are several competing approaches to solving a programming problem, there are debates over when to use certain methods, and in the end sometimes creative, out-of-the-box solutions are the best ones. While programming is grounded in logic, it requires a creative and intuitive mind to address unique or difficult situations, so while it's most certainly a science, there's a strong argument for it to be considered an art as well.

TLDR: Everything is art and everything is science if you think it is, and you can't be right or wrong about it.

EDIT: Also "science" and "art" are pretty broad terms, so...

LOL! I didn't get it was satire, thanks for clearing that up. It really seemed what someone would write if they didn't think much of art. Good writing then!

I've read so much crap lately that I couldn't see through the layer of satire.

I was happy and surprised to see Another World on that list! It was special to me as a child-thing and I didn't think many people knew about it.
It's interesting dwarf fortress got thrown in there. It's definitely unique (and I've played it).

I'm just happy to see some later titles on the list next to tetris and pac-man. It's interesting how little violence and gore is on the list. (It's practically non-existant)

I suppose art has to be appealing to be art in its most accepted forms.
