THE EMO WARDROBE
Posts
I'm a bit of a control-freak and socialist. (I also define control-freak as someone who cares enough to get something done).
I'm not trying to advocate religion, per se, but it is a pretty good example of a study in the "right" way to live. It's a living experiment, really.
Positive: in this sense, contributes to the overall well-being of humanity. That's pretty wide scope, but you seem to want to deal with a wide scope.
By the way, I am a worker drone. 26 years old. Married. No kids. Working on an electronic public health record.
EDIT:
I only deal with "epic". That's my style.
EDIT 2:
My "epic" point is that labelling yourself and adopting the emo persona is at best useless, and more likely damaging than contructive in real life.

Oh, we're all living experiments, that's for sure. And the history books of the future are the record of our data. Religion is... Or was, since most people have forgotten this... Is it not simply recommendations on how to live?
And maybe, in some cases, if everyone followed those recommendations, it might work.
So why don't people follow it. It might be great.
Just like communism, the idea itself is seen as quite good, but it's never gotten a chance to work in a pure, realized state.
People knowingly do wrong.
Why? That human nature thing again. And thereby, religion hasn't worked too well. Sure, it can have great ideas. But great ideas are worthless if not implemented.
Positive~ Okay, with that, we're starting to get somewhere. Kinda. The overall well-being of humanity? That's not as wide as you may think. Well, not in terms of ambiguity. Because that's something we might be able to narrow down, rather than find a synonym for it.
Well-being. Is that total efficiency of the human race? Is it complete happiness to each person? Lay some stuff down here.
26, 22. Close enough. Still relatively young.
Worker drone- Well, then. I stand a bit blind-sighted here, eh. So I suppose you could deal a massive blow to my stance, were you to say that you are honestly perfectly content with your life and place in the world. Can you?
As for your -epic- point. I feel like we're going in circles. To label/adapt emo is a social signal for attention. Yes, there are other ways, yes they might be more effective. But this is still a usable method.
In the place of real life- to adopt the emo persona, if it works still, could be more helpful than not. If it wasn't somehow working for them I don't know why there would be people who do it still.

See, I guess I don't see the appeal of garnering that type of attention. Especially when is so rarely works in their favor.
And I was being facetious with "epic".
(I also PM'd you because I am done with this topic).

If someone is an emo, I tend to laugh at them.
After all, an emo's personality is that of a whiny teenager.

I have known of two successful emos and they weren't even true emos; they didn't have the mindset. They simply liked black tanktops, striped shirts and little pink hairclips. Right now they are respectable young adults--with faults of course, but they realize what kentona is saying.
Also, that is TWO.
TWO out of the THREE THOUSAND or so kids that I've met. That's not an exaggeration, as I go a large school, have lots of friends, meet friends of friends, and most importantly I work with children/adolescents.
BTW you can conform and still be yourself! I'd like to bring MYSELF ZOMG as an example of this. I'm a fairly well-respected kid at my school, and everybody in my grade knows who I am. A large chunk of the younger classmen know me as well as quite a few Freshmen. Every morning I do my "daily rounds" and visit people, collect stickers (I am a stickerphilliac) and commented on because I park so far away from the school. So there's POPULARITY in check. As for scholastic achievements? I'm not the absolute best student, but all of my classes are AP or Honors. Beyond the actual classes that I take, I manage to forge cordial relationships with my teachers and I consider almost all of them my friends. Yesterday a baby boomer told me that I was one of her favorite students. There's EDUCATION and BRIDGING THE GENERATION GAP (super-important to be "yourself" in my book) all taken care of.
What's left? Uh, what about ideals/morals... I'm not going to focus on this because while I'm anti-alcohol/smoking/drugs/HALO there are plenty of teens that seem like DRUGGIES or EMO DRUNKS or whatever but really aren't so no comment here!
Alright let's compare the BEING YOURSELF-O-METER with that of an Emo Kid.
POPULARITY: Okay so you stand in the same part of the hallway every morning before classes. Same people. Same topics. ...yeah.
EDUCATION: Ugggggh my teachers are OUT TO GET ME I am perfectly bright but I spend too much time channelling my intelligence into being pretty annoying because IT IS COOL TO NOT DO WORK (this is not just an Emo problem but bear with me here)
BRIDGING THE GENERATION GAP (super-important!): Dad why do you always steal my mascara I need it to make a good impression on my eigth boyfriend this week YOU SUCK YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE A KIIIIDDDDDDDDDD

MODIFY: Damn, I forgot a conlusion. OKAY HERE GOES
To be yourself, you need to be somewhat known even if not surrounded by fans or anything. You need to be able to put your best foot forward in both social circles and education without making a total fool out of yourself (really bad shyness could be a problem here but uh most you call "shy" are actually just scared of you so be nice to them okay!). Most importantly, you need to be able to successfully communicate with other generations. Being able to do so means that they (the wise people) realize you aren't just some bratty punk but rather somebody who can actually make a coherent thought and not whine communicating it!

Wow.
Oh and as a follow-up to my post, I wear jeans and a t-shirt almost every day.
ALSO some quasi-semi-pro-goth/emo dealies!
1) Some kids are goth because they are poor and can't afford anything other than dark coats from Goodwill and their dad's hand-me-down 1980 rock shirts.
2) Some kids are emo because on some girls it actually looks really good. This tends to be like Emo Lite, however--less obtrusive bangs, for example. I've only known one guy who I thought looked good as an emo and he's huge (in SHEER BODY MASS (tall and strong), he's not fat). He also had brown hair that was only kinda spiked but he wore the clothes.

You can type all that crap about yourself, Craze, and yet you can't even finish a character design in the game design forum?
E-go!
E-go!
That long debate was a bit much and had many leaps of logic.
I've listened to emo music for the last 10 years or so years and it seems recently the media has transformed it to mean something beyond my grasp. We used to use words like hipster for people with this sort of fashion. We never used to use to the Emo to describe a person. I don't think Hey Mercedes or Jets to Brazil are about this shit.

What!? Humankind classifying someone by the way they dress and applying a general rule that they are inferior!? That's never happened before...
I listen to the following Bands:
Rise Against
Alexisonfire
The Used
My Chemical Romance
30 seconds to mars
and whatever else
Many people have said that I have a very Emo taste in music (or, screemo) which for a lot of the bands I listen to I disagree, but really, I don't care. I enjoy the music I listen to, and my personality does not fit the emo description at all.

There was an article in 2001 about how all bands given the emo label did not consider themselves emo. The article came to the conclusion that it's not actually a movement any musician wanted to be a part of, but something placed on them either by fans of by a record industry (independent at the time) attempting to create something similar to the grunge movement (another manufactured label).
Rise Against's first two albums are really really good, in my opinion.

Completely agree Canuck. I prefer there first one by far.
Also, I have recently realized that a lot of people who dress and look emo, really aren't. I know two people of such sort.
Also, gaia online has WAY to many emos
