I've actually stopped reading books at the moment. Instead I've been reading manga and working on RealmS.
Current manga - Gantz. It's pretty crazy and gory. Very violent and has a lot of nudity, but the story and some of the characters are pretty good and I'm finding it a compelling 'read' so I guess that's all that really matters.

Book: Of Mice and Men
Thoughts: Its okay. I haven't delved too far into it yet to really give an substantial opinion.

Well currently i have been reading manga lately. I have just been reading the entire series of Rozen Maiden and also the latest volume of One Piece. I probably should read a proper book soon.
Haven't had a lot of time for reading lately, but I've been checking out Accelerando when I have a few moments lately. I forget the author, but I found it released through the Creative Commons on the internet for free, so I figured I'd give it a go. It's sort of so-so. The vision of the future it presents is exciting and awesome, but so far it's a bit lacking as a narrative. Seems so focused on the ideas that it neglects the characters.
...but then, it's science fiction, or maybe cyberpunk. That describes a good 99% of the genre.
I like this whole "free books that you buy if you like later" (legally) thing, though. I think I'll try some of Cory Doctorow's books after this.

The tenth book of the Wheel of Time series. I had to re-read the series because I got the 11th book and it had been so long since I read them the one time (plus, I could only get to the end of the 9th book last because it got pretty dry. I'm pushing through 10 now.)

A Game of Thrones by George Martin. It's not very good but it passes the time.
Really? I thought it was pretty good. It starts out slow (if you ignore the beheadings, horrible bloodshed, etc.) but the characters are interesting, there are no real bad guys and it's part of what's probably one of the best fantasy series out there right now. One could argue that isn't saying much, but...
Also it took a lot of guts for George R.R. Martin to kill of Eddard Stark at the end. Any other author probably would have let him live.
Anyway, I'm reading An Army at Dawn, by Rick Atkinson. It's about America invading North Africa during World War II, and it's pretty engaging so far. Something I didn't know: Walt Disney caught wind of the invasion during planning stages and offered to create a mascot for the project. The government turned him down, though, but it's pretty amazing to imagine somebody like Walt Disney at the forefront of world affairs, in World War II at that!

Part of the sword of truth series. I plan on reading them all.
Yeah, i've read the first one and it's quite an enjoyable read.
Is the Sword of Truth series the one where the hero ends up justifying killing innocent bystandards and "evil pacifists" because as the hero, he can do no wrong, and every female character ends up getting raped (occasionally by the hero), and there's some sort of evil chicken, and it all turns into a thinly veiled essay on the author's hardline manichaen philosophy? Like Ayn Rand wrote a series of fantasy novels?
...I don't think so.
There is much sexual talk and description in the books from what I have read. Very intensive details at times, allow me to quote oa nice long piece that shows some of the writing, but first, a quick description:
There is a group called the sisters of the light. They read prophecies and try to interpret them in order to keep the world safe. The girl named Margaret in this quoted writing is one of the sisters of the light. She has been following some of these other sisters, as she felt something was wrong. It is a dark night in the deep woods, and the "sisters" she has been following have appeared to set up a large circle of more than 100 candles in the clearing, and have summoned a beast known as a namble (wasn't explained in the book what a 'namble' was, so you aren't really missing out). In the center of the circle, in front of the beast, is one of the sisters, completely nude, with a cloth inj her teeth, and sisters holding her down. Margaret is hiding in the bushes with a companion, a wizard named Jeddiah, and the two of them are watching what is happening. Also, as a final note: The "gift" is a certain wizards power that some are born with, and a quillion steals the gift from a wizard. This summoned beast can take the gift from the quillion, and transfer it to a being.
God I hope someone actually reads this, it took so long for me to write all this out (I can't seem to type things as I read them anymore, perhaps it is just my current setup). Anyways, as you can tell, I stopped right before the actual "sex scene" began, and some of the stuff that I wrote in the little information blurb above the story portion, had no real purpose to what I wrote. If you want to hear more, let me know, and I will write the rest of the sex scene and such.
Hopefully you guys like these books as much as I do. They are by Terry Goodkind for anyone who wanted to know, and this part starts on page 319 of the book "Stone Of Tears"

"...The naked woman stared fixedly up at nothing. She panted with fear, her breast heaving. Slowly, she spread her legs.
The beast stirred, giving a low grunt.
Margaret gripped Jeddiah's forearm, her fingers digging into him.
The beast sniffed the air. As it slowly unfolded itself, Margaret saw that it was larger than it had looked when it was all hunched over. It was powerfully built, looking mostly like a man. Flickers of candlelight reflected off sweat-slicked knotted muscles of its arms and chest...

...Growling in a low rumble, it's powerful muscles flexing, it's haunted eyes glowing orange, the namble edged like a huge cat toward the woman on the ground. Head low, it crawled between her legs. In a state of ragged fear, the woman still stared up at nothing.
The namble sniffed at her crotch. It's long tongue flicked out, running over her. She flinched, making a small jerk of a sound against the cloth held between her teeth, but she kept her legs open. Her eyes did not move, she did not look at the namble. The sisters in the circle began a soft chant. The namble licked her again, slower, grunting as it did so this time. She squealed against the cloth. Beads of sweat shimmered on her flesh. She kept her legs wide apart.
Rising up to it's knees, the beast gave a throaty roar to the black sky. It's pointed, barbed, erect phallus stood out, plainly silhouetted against the candles beyond. Muscles bulged in knotted cords along it's arms and shoulders as the namble bent forward, putting a fist to each side of the woman. It's tongue licked out around her throat as it gave a vibrating rumble of a growl, and then it lowered itself, covering the woman with it's massive form.

lol, i knew this was all fake when i read the words "evil chicken". It really is a good series though, i'm thinking of buying it.

Her power, her magic, was also a weapon of defense. But it would only work on people. It would not work on a chicken. And it would not work on wickedness incarnate.
Her gaze flicked toward the door, checking the distance. The chicken took a single hop toward her. Claws gripping Juni's upper arm, it leaned her way. Her leg muscles tightened till they trembled.
The chicken backed up a step, tensed, and spurted feces onto Juni's face.
It let out the cackle that sounded like a laugh.
She dearly wished she could tell herself she was being silly. Imagining things.
But she knew better.
<snip>
Kahlan frantically tried to think as the chicken bawk-bawk-bawked.
<snip>
"Mother," the chicken croaked.
Kahlan flinched with a cry.
<snip>
In the dark, the chicken thing let out a low chicken cackle laugh.
It hadn't come from whre she expected the chicken to be. It was behind her.
"Please, I mean no harm," she called into the darkness. "I mean no disrespect. I will leave you to your business now, if that's all right with you."
She took another shuffling step toward the door. She moved carefully, slowly, in case the chicken thing was in the way. She didn't want to bump into it and make it angry. She mustn't underestimate it.
Kahlan had on any number of occasions thrown herself with ferocity against seemingly invincible foes. She knew well the value of a resolute violent attack. But she also somehow knew beyond doubt that this adversary could, if it wanted, kill her as easily as she could wring a real chicken's neck. If she forced a fight, this was one she would lose.
<snip>
The chicken thing let out a whispering cackle.
<snip>
With the next flash of lightning, she saw chicken feet standing between her and the crack under the door. The thing wasn't more than a foot from her face.
<snip>
The beak pinched the vein on the back of her hand over her eyes. The chicken tugged, as if trying to pull a worm from the ground.
It was a command. It wanted her hand away from her eyes.
The beak gave a sharp tug on her skin. There was no mistaking the meaning in that insistent yank. Move the hand, now, it was saying, or you'll be sorry.
If she made it angry, there was no telling what it was capable of doing to her. Juni lay dead above her as a reminder of the possibilities.
She told herself that if it pecked at her eyes, she would have to grab it and try to wring its neck. If she was quick, it could only get in one peck. She would have one eye left. She would have to fight it then. But only if it went for her eyes.
Her instincts screamed that such action would be the most foolish, dangerous thing she could do. Both the Bird Man and Richard said this was not a chicken. She no longer doubted them. But she might have no choice.
If she started, it would be a fight to the death. She held no illusion as to her chances. Nonetheless, she might be forced to fight it. With her last breath, if need be, as her father had taught her.
The chicken snatched a bigger beakful of her skin along with the vein and twisted. Last warning.
Kahlan carefully moved her trembling hand away. The chicken-thing cackled softly with satisfaction.

It was posted specifically because it was so terrible no one could believe it was real. The other stuff I mentioned was also from people making fun of the series for similar stuff. Apparently it really goes down hill after the second book.
