WHAT MAKES A GREAT ANIME, FOR YOU?
Posts
Just a regular discussion.
I'm curious as to what first comes to mind, or what people desire about an anime?
Personally, my favorite at the moment is Higurashi because of it's complicated way of telling it's story. That, and the memorable characters. The awesome, relate able characters as well! For example, I love Mion'sappearance tomboyish attitude, and Rena's innocent personality. This however can change in the instant! Whenever something drastic happens, I feel it, ya know?
So there's my opinion, what about yours?

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

the beach episode is my bet ;)
It has to make me smile. And that's about it. No smiles = not worth my time. I have low standards.
Berserk makes me smile.
Berserk makes me smile.
If I sympathize with the emotions or feelings of the characters in some way, whether it's love or revenge or self-pity
So... if it's somehow realistic? Even if the setting isn't.

oh how I hate the beach episode hahahahaha, I think that the reason that makes anime different is that they can add depth to cartoons (I say "can" cause there are some slice of life that has the same depth as western cartoons) and that turns out to be pretty interesting if you get into it. But at the end is pretty much why people see movies or read books, they look for entertainment, whether it is for having a good time or to make people think. So for me is how much enjoyment got out of it, and if it was great the satisfaction after I watched it.
For example azumanga daioh or seto no hanayome, I laugh out loud every 5 minutes, but when finished was only a *sigh* that was a good comedy, but they doesn't trascend at all on me.
Or cases were the show was entertaining but it didn't offer all the potential it had, you end with oh, this was a entertaining watch, but it could have been better, like elfen lied or higashi no eden.
So the ones that are great are ones you remember cause they take advantage of what they had and deliver something outstanding, that is memorable in a very good way, like Welcome to the NHK, Tatami Galaxy, Planetes.
And I apply this to any kind of art, not only anime.

Yeah, I get what you mean. It's true, I think the people backstage should give it all they have with their project. They can't leave anything untouched or unattended. A risk is also something that makes a great anime. For example,
L's death in Death Note, was the exact opposite of what was expected, since he was a fan favorite and basically made the show. However, his death was the catalyst for that series to turn out the way it did.
*SPOILERS ON DEATH NOTE*
It's gotta be awesome.
Fillers = NOT awesome.
Bad animation = NOT awesome
Lame characters = NOT awesome.
Annoying voice actors = NOT awesome.

What makes a great anime for me? In no particular order:
* Good story. Does not neccesarily have to be the most dramatic, complex plot ever with 9001 plot twists; if it properly carries the anime, it's good.
* Good characters.
* Good music.
* Good seiyuus (voice actors).
* Super/real robots and other mecha, if applicable.
* Decent animation budget.
* Has relatively proper closure at the end, not applicable if guaranteed sequel.
* Appropriate levels of fanservice if applicable, not too much and not too little.
As for anime that I consider were great or just really liked, 20 of them (there's more!) in no particular order:
* Yuusha-Ou GaoGaiGar
* Gundam Seed & Gundam Seed Destiny
* Card Captor Sakura
* Slayers
* Sword Art Online
* Nichijou
* Seitokai no Ichizon
* Kami Nomi zo Shiru Sekai
* Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu
* Detective Conan
* Campione
* Hyouka
* Sakura-sou no Pet na Kanojo
* Kyoukaisen-jou no Horizon
* Galaxy Angel
* Crest/Banner of the Stars
* Zoids
* Kaichou wa Maid-sama!
* Ixion Saga DT
* Fairy Tail

When I watched anime, I liked 'em short. Like, under 50 episodes was great. It cut back on the amount of filler for the most part if there were fewer episodes to watch.
But yeah. Emotionally devastating ones are the best, and it's the best for closure at the end if you actually feel something for it I guess?
My favourite one when I used to watch anime more regularly was Chrono Crusade (it's been likened to a babby Hellsing). It was 24 episodes yet still somehow had TONS of filler.. and as I watched them I kept thinking, "this is terrible, I should stop watching this soon" but I hung around until the end and the last episode was surprisingly good.
I also liked Wolf's Rain (about 30 episodes) but the story was just.. I don't even know. It was beautiful, and the artwork and music were incredible, but I wouldn't watch for its story or characters.
So.. horrible amounts of emotional goodness and beautiful OST/artwork make anime for me, I suppose.

I actually haven't sat down and watched a lot of anime the whole way through. The only ones that I've seen entirely are Gurren Lagann, The Big O, Hellsing, Trigun, Power Stone, Evangelion (ugh), and I think Trinity Blood & Utawarumono as well. I also watched the entirety of Yu-Gi-Oh for nostalgia's sake, and Yu-Gi-Oh GX (against my better judgement, at the request of a friend).
If I had to explain what makes a great anime it would probably be the same core things that make a good movie or game. Characters, Story, Music, and Artistic Design. That's why The Big O and Gurren Lagann still remain my favourites, they just ooze perfection in those categories (with the exception of season 2 of The Big O, of course. Season 1 overshadows it and makes up for it though.) I would say that Trigun is really good as well, but once you read Trigun Maximum it stops being a great show and starts being a poor adaptation.
Things that I can't stand in anime would be annoying characters (Evangelion), forced moral dilemmas (Evangelion), and a confusing, misguided plot that likes to believe its really deep (Evangelion). All jokes aside, if you want to know what I don't like in anime you can pretty much look at NGE and have your answer.
EDIT: I'd also like to point out that all of the anime that I've really enjoyed seems to have a "magic number" of episodes: 26. I don't know what it is, like I said, I haven't watched a lot of anime, so maybe that's why it seems to be a trend. I need to research this more.

Nothing reveals Humanity so well as the games it plays. A game of betrayal, where the most suspicious person is brutally murdered? How savage.

A year has 52 weeks. divide this by two, and you have 26. That's what I think the trend comes from. An episode every other week, for a year, or every week for 6 months. I could be proven wrong, though.
What makes an anime for me is an interesting plot, the lack of a standard Western superhero as main character, (If the protagonist isn't a lunatic or tool I'm immediately bored, although this does not apply to slice of life), it must make you think, and it must not be hesistant to kill off main characters.
Fillers are bad, and fanservice is only good if it doesn't overshadow and/or influence the rest of the anime.
I like anything "new", really.
My days of enjoying shonen fighting anime and mediocre drama are over. I need fresh ideas to get engaged anymore.
And I confess, you can sometimes see me in the rank and file of "yay 80s/90s; new shit sucks".
Now where is my Kaiji s3?

I think that at one point a Japanese TV season was considered 13 episodes (once weekly) so most 26-episode shows are two seasons long.
I like characters with personality as well... characters with realistic flaws. Flaws are at least as interesting as strengths, and yet so many characters don't have good flaws.
A particularly good example is Vash the Stampede, who is insanely good at gunfighting but his moral dilemmas and insecurities lead him to awful but interesting situations. A particularly bad example is Death the Kid from Soul Eater, who is a great warrior unless his overly-specific OCD happens to kick in during the middle of a fight for the sole purpose of creating tension *collective groan from the audience*

13 episodes is a half-season, actually, if the show is half an hour long. If it's an hour long show, then it is a full season. But anime with hour-long episodes are so rare as to be unheard of. I can't name a single one.
Due to the fact that Japanese tv networks apparently have no faith in anime, they don't usually purchase full seasons for anime shows. Exceptions are made, but the norm for the past few years is to order as short of a series as possible. Of the last five anime series I watched, only one had more than 13 episodes. (Several only had 12, which is apparently the new 13?)
I like things that are over the top, whether that means awesome action or zany comedy. Kore Wa Zombie Desu Ka is a fantastic example because it does both. One of the two main characters is a horribly violent magical girl, and the other is a zombie who accidentally steals the first character's powers and becomes a male magical girl zombie with a pink chainsaw.
Kyouran Kazoku Nikki is very obscure but is also one of my favorites. All the main characters are potential heirs to a thousand-year-old god of destruction, and could reincarnate into him and destroy the world at any time. The government has decided to handle this by rounding them all up from around the world, and sticking them in a nice suburban house together with one very unfortunate handler, and making them learn to love each-other as a family, in hopes that when one of them does finally morph into the god of destruction, he or she won't be as mean.
