WHAT MAKES A GREAT ANIME, FOR YOU?
Posts
Charming or offbeat characters. Cute drawing style (anything that looks super-realistic like Gundam, is an instant turn-off). Usually a hybrid of romance/comedy/ either scifi or fantasy.
Shakugan no Shana, A Certain Magical Index, Eden of the East, Puella Madoka, all of these are good examples.
This is why I now read the manga of Naruto instead of watching the anime. Bleach I can sorta stand, they seem to do a strange every other season rule. As in, between seasons they'll have a season that is pure filler (they were in Hollow World, and then they did something on Muramasa, with no real sense of getting there).

Fillers = NOT awesome.

Tsunderes make me smile as well. I like 'em better when they're parodying the stereotype though.
bulmabriefs144You must be thinking of Gundam Unicorn and others set in the UC universe. Gundam Seed (Destiny), Gundam 00, Gundam X, and Gundam Wing all had character designs along the lines of To Aru Majutsu no Index and Shakugan no Shana.

good characters.

The right anime has a good balance between comedy, action, and plot(Hajime no Ippo). Comedy doesn't work everywhere and isn't always necessary though. Sometimes pure action is enough to make a good anime(Gurren Lagann). I also like animes that explore the human psyche(Death Note). The cutesy slice of life animes are the worst. I feel like I'm watching a show for kids.
Arcan said a lot of good points; mixing comedy, action, and plot. I also don't like anime that focuses on nothing but..fan-service, or literally nothing happening to advance the story line. Who here remembers Cowboy Bebop? Fullmetal Alchemist? Code Geass? Great anime, which had it all~ :x
Just finished High School of the Dead, it was pretty good. Way too much fan service though! I'm about to start Monster and Dead Man Wonderland, which one should be first?

Just a regular discussion.
I'm curious as to what first comes to mind, or what people desire about an anime?
So there's my opinion, what about yours?
I'm a little older, so I've always enjoyed anime that's more adult oriented. I'm not talking about hentai, but the new anime out there now a-days is kinda annoying in my book. Some disgustingly young teenager saves the universe through her magic wand or some crap - and Squeels the entire time in stupidity.
I grew up with anime being about Guns, and Fighting, and Giant Robots. I watched Aeon Flux when it aired on MTV. I watched The SciFi channel when it had Saturday morning anime - they actually showed things like Akira and Armitage on Saturdays!
I love animes like Berserk, Fist of the North Star, Golgo 13, etc. There's very little new anime that I like out there now. If I have to watch newer anime I usually end up with serious romance like Romeo X Juliet. I guess Code Geass is ok, I'm kinda in the middle of that. I just miss the manly characters I guess, they're all Bishonen now.
My favorite Anime is Full Metal Panic. They really captured the old-school Manly character from 70s-80s anime in Souske, and then had some awesome war scenes that took me back, and then some lighter scenes that took me forward to good romance anime of today. I recommend it to most people. =)

Monster's really good all the way through.
Dead Man Wonderland sucks after the first episode.
Then again, I think HSOTD becomes awful after episode 2, so my tastes probably don't match yours.
