STARTING A NEW GAME - NEED HELP WITH A NAME (RMXP)

Sorry if this isn't the right forum for this, I didn't know where we are supposed to put things like this.

I'm starting a new game called (currently) The Planet Guardians.

It's intro pretty much follows Final Fantasy II where the king has instructed his mages to open a portal to the underworld so he can summon an army of monsters. The main character is oblivious to his schemes until the librarian who he works for in the royal library turns in to a harpy type creature and attacks him.

He meets up with a woman in the library and it is revealed during the battle that she can use fire magic. She'll take him to meet others like her and start out on a quest to defeat the king and his hordes of evil.

I'm welcome to any suggestions on a bit more of an interesting name.

This game is going to include elements from Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy II and most of the soundtrack from Final Fantasy IX. I'm only going to use one piece from II as I'm trying to help it all tie together by limiting myself to IX's soundtrack.

Why not call it Final Fantasy? I don't see people do that often.

Joking aside, hmm. The Planet Guardians sounds a bit clunky. I'm a fan of nice, snappy, short titles (my flagship title is called Tundra, which is about a world that's freezing, case in point) so I would personally just call it something like "Guardian".
Planet Protectors is neat and alliterative. It also sticks out because of that (though I guess it is a little hokey-sounding). Or perhaps something like Trihan said - one word that captures the essence of your game. You could go the other route - a line from an in-game text that also captures the story essence.

Stay away from Tales of the Forbidden Chaos: Story of Unchained Sophistry and the like. Overly dramatic is a bit of a cliche and while it's useful at times it can come off as rather amatuerish and clunky.

Words that describe or have some meaning to your game might work. (Looking at some of my own I've things like The Sound of Flames - game about outrunning a bushfire -, Even Day - taken from an in-game 'prophecy' - , The Here and Now of Yesterday/Where End Times Saddest Song - taken from a poem that inspired the creation of the series - and Breath of Fire: Hearts Aflame... okay that one is a naughty but it's my guilty pleasure since it is a fangame. >.<; )

You really do like your fire, don't you Lib? I sometimes suspect you of being a closet arsonist.

Using a line of dialogue as a game title is an interesting thought and not something you see done often.

Edit: Planet Protectors puts me in mind of a cheesy Saturday cartoon about a group of kids fighting ridiculous bad guys. Could actually work if you're making a more whimsical game.
My ideas are

"peacekeepers"
"existential"
"Radiant Heroes"
"pursuit and resistance"
"The Hope of Tomorrow"

I actually have quite a phobia when it comes to fire. I had nightmares for days after making that game. ;.; (I'm such a wuss that it gets in the way of my ability to cook and I run from sparklers... to my younger sister's delight.)
Probably comes from having many, many house fires and living in a bushfire prone area.

Yessss~ "In the world of Exion an ancient evil has awoken to take over the planet. Together five young teens discover five forgotten tablets that give them incredible powers. Together they must fight injustice and protect the planet for they are now... the Planet Protectors! <cheesy music starts>

I would watch it.
It could be an unofficial sequal/ prequal to "ZHP Unlosing Ranger VS Darkdeath Evilman"
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

With a name like Planet Guardians or Planet Protectors, I must insist that you include heart as a damage element.

However, if your goal is not to invoke images of five 90s teenagers from different continents and cultures receiving magic rings which they use to fight pollution and call upon a certain Captain, you should probably change the title to something else, because even before Liberty started singing that was the first thing I thought of.

The portal seems like a really central piece of the game, since it's most of what you talked about in your short description - naming the game after the portal would probably be fitting. Gate to Pandemonium would even be a nice FF2 reference.
No, this isn't going to be Captain Planet. Even though I was thinking of making a fangame of it not long ago. I'd actually thought of this game, then I got bored, and now I've started from scratch again.

The characters are going to based from people I knew in high school but changing their names to keep their privacy. I'm a big fan of fantasy games so I thought about what each one might have as their elemental affinity, only one of them won't have elemental and she'll be focused on status magic.

I know that this game is going to seem very Final Fantasyish but I don't really want to use the title. Even a Beatrix type battle is going to be in it when you fight the King's mage who he kills when he doesn't like the idea of her blowing the whistle on his schemes and then resurrects her back as a monster to do his bidding.

It's likely going to end with them returning to the castle dungeons where the portal has been built and somehow shutting it down. I'm only working with a rough plan right now but it will get better as it comes along.

Do you think the portal should be mentioned in the title? I know it's going to be very brief but it's really what starts the whole mess that their world is in.

If not the portal, something important. Think of key things that your game couldn't work without:
- People (their titles/occupations can often work, i.e. Twilight Princess)
- Locations
- Artifacts
- Events
- Player objectives

You may just want to make a list of the top three to five candidates of each of these.

You can also make a title that solely ties into the game's thee and not to anything concrete in it. My older game is called Vindication, for example. But probably it's better to pick one of the above key elements of your game, and then think of a way of describing it that meshes with your theme (e.g. naming your western game Wild ARMs instead of just ARMs, if ARMs are an important artifact in it)
Also there are naming schemes.

Anime/Manga style: Miki Falls, Midori Days, Magic Knight Rayearth

(Essentially title plus 1 leading character)

In this style, we also have Sparkling Generation Valkyrie Yuuki, a light webcomic.

Book style: Wheel of Time, Old Kingdom, Journey to the West, Lord of the Rings

(Usually descriptive of the journey itself)

Game style: Kingdom Hearts, Rogue Galaxy, Chrono Trigger, Seiken Densetsu, Final Fantasy

(Game titles usually have no inherent meaning outside the context of the game. They are designed to eyecatch so you'll play and figure out what the name is about)

Nix the Planet Protectors entirely, and catch on a theme the game is about. Something midway through the game that is intended to be a focal point of something you want the game to be about. For example, a game where a psycho goes back in time to try to make a girl love him (and not get murdered), and winds up erasing himself, might be called Clock of Atonement. :)
Seeing that it's becoming more Final Fantasyish by the day. I now have the next town they are going to named "Poft" and the excessive use of magic causes the surrounding environment to deteriorate.

What do you think I should call it to link it to Final Fantasy? I was thinking along the lines of this rm2k one I've played which was "Final Fantasy: Endless Nova"

1. I guess the main points of the game is that the king has released monsters from the underworld.

2. He turned his council mage in to a monster as well and thinking that because he killed her and then turned her in to the monster, she doesn't have her soul anymore, but she does.

3. They encounter her several times and one the third one, she begs them to kill her because she's disgusted about being resurrected like this

4. They attempt to find a way to break it and find a priestess who knows a way to reverse the spell.

5. There will be two ways to be able to do it. They can either take the quick and easy approach and just get the monster curse lifted or they can find the ingredients to make an item which will work like the Klatchian Coffee out of the Disc World books. (It not only cures drunkeness but takes the user right through sobriety and out the other side) in other words she'll become the opposite to the monster she was turned in to and become a Paladin/Mage type character. This will be a challenge/time consuming as the items required will be rare drops, but it will be well worth it.

6. They make their assault on the castle at the beginning of the game where the king is holed up. The king has finally turned himself in to a monster and the final battle begins. After that, the mage, whether she has become the Paladin/Mage or not help them finally destroy the portal and ending the plague of monsters.

Of course, I'll flesh the story out a bit to keep it interesting but that is the main events.

Hope this didn't ramble on too long.

If this is the wrong board for these kinds of things. Please let me know and I'll shift this message to a new topic.

If it's just inspired by Final Fantasy, and not actually connected to any of the FF games, do yourself a favor and don't actually put Final Fantasy in the title.

I'm saying this as a guy whose name is Locke and who runs an online Final Fantasy fangame, so it's not FF hate. It's just that there are already probably as many RPG Maker games with that level of similarity to Final Fantasy as there are all other types of RPG Maker games combined. And also probably as many Final Fantasy fangames as fangames of all other works combined.
Final Fantasy: All the Bravest Lol, please..just no. I'm a fan of the series, but yeah if it's not an FF fangame, do what Doctor House(Locke) said, and keep Final Fantasy out of the title~ ;3
Yes in RM titles the words 'Final' 'Dragon' 'Fantasy' and 'Warrior' are all silent.
Wait, is it a Final Fantasy fangame, or just borrowing a number of elements from it?

The latter it sounds like.So perfectly normal, we shouldn't even be throwing around the 'f-word' here.
Pretty much what LX_Theo and Billwilliams put in their posts. I don't think most Final Fantasy games have normal sounding names.I haven't met anyone called Cloud in real life. The older ones from the nes, snes, era seem a lot more normal compared to what they came up with for the playstation ones.

I strongly agree with not having Final Fantasy in the title. Maybe "The Infernal Shrine" or something like that.
Whatever name you choose don't get too attached to it. You'll almost always think of a better or more fitting one later on.
