FOCUS ON PUZZLES/DUNGEONS

Hello everyone, first time poster here. (I couldn't think of anything substantial to say in an introductory post.)

I will admit that I am a complete RPG Maker noob and just bought Ace a few days ago in the sale. Although I have had XP for a year, I only played it in short intensive bursts.

What I would like to ask is this. Is there anyone else who just enjoys making puzzles and/or dungeons, while ignoring the need for a story, game world or characters? Is there a market for that kind of thing?

Not only that, does anyone play games by people with no coding/artistic experience (or talent), because I invariably use the RTP.

My favorite type of game to make, and to play, are those games which just begin at level 1. There's no story or setup, you just advance through levels or dungeons (or even one big dungeon). Is there anyone with similar interests, or is making complete games the way to go?

**I know there are dungeon crawlers, but the few I have played in the past are beyond my skill level, with their use of scripting and original art. What I'm really wondering then is how far you can push the RTP for Zelda-esque puzzles and gameplay.
Pretty far. I think you at least need a backstory and ending, but besides that, I've made boulder push puzzles, bombable areas, guard puzzles, puzzles involving lanterns facing a certain direction, or hitting colored switches, puzzles where you can't step the same spot twice, and even riddles.
This game might be a good example of how you can just present some story at the beginning and end to give the player a little more motivation to make his way through the game:

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Dungeon crawlers, if done properly, can be very enjoyable. If your gameplay is good enough, the story doesn't have to be in the spotlight. It can be extremely minimalistic.

The key is to have engaging gameplay though. There's way more to that than just making dungeons and puzzles. There's also, you know, battles. And party customization and everything else.

Actually asking me to... kill monsters?

Games's don't even need monsters or leveling up.

You could have a puzzle game, where there's a town, some story
background. But you could completely focus on puzzles with
no fighting at all. Imagine an RPG with no random encounters.
Something like Zelda or Alundra, but more focused on one
element.

Edit: You could even have experience points or leveling
from completing puzzles. Or the player gains some sort of title,
etc..

If the puzzles are engaging enough, then yeah, you can base an entire game around the idea. The Adventure of Lolo and Chip's Challenge come to mind, though those are really old examples.

Art is a selling point, but not a requirement. If you can't make custom graphics, just use the RTP as best you can. As long as everything looks consistent and the tiles are used properly, no one will complain.

Different games and graphic styles appeal to different people. There's nothing specifically right or wrong about them; just bear in mind that your audience may be limited depending on what you choose.
