Remember when I actually used to make games? Me neither.

I'd rather play Pong for a weekend than this crap.

It's like turning Battlefield 3 into a puzzle game.

On that note - looking at it again, it's actually pretty clever to take one genre of game (in this case, sandbox) and adapt it to another. You don't usually see stuff like that with fangames, (though there are commercial games that have done it - Lufia 2 going from straight RPG to Action RPG as an example, or FF7 and the various offshoots that aren't really RPGs.) It's definitely something interesting to look at.

Really? I find it a bit more common. Usually, its a sign that the creator of the said fan game doesn't truly understand the core concept of the source he's imitating. Take Sonic and the Chaos Dragons, for instance. A generic mess that tried to adapt a fast-paced action platformer into an RPG. It was slow, defied Sonic's lore (well at least his lore before Sonic 06), and was overall a wasted effort. At least with Sonic's "official" RPG, the developers attempted to incorporate Sonic's fast-paced gameplay into the system, something this fanboy hardly did.

Having a signature is too mainstream. I'm not part of your system!

Yeah.. this game didn't translate well to RPG. All I see is a very basic rpg with custom graphics. The creator traded away pretty much every good aspect of RPGs(interesting mapping, complex battle system, puzzle solving) just so he/she could have a Minecraft theme.

I do think that Minecraft does have some potential to be an RPG game but it would have to be rebuilt from the ground up.

This topic is fine by me. It's a topic to discuss a game that is not the topic creators', nor is it on-site. If one of the other mods feels like it should be shut, then they'll do that, but for the moment it's okay.

Oh good, I guess if it is for discussion it is pretty interesting.

The problematic of having the same core idea than the original seems pretty weird for me. Let's take a look to Mario's World: Classic Mario, Mario Kart, Mario , Mario Party, Mario & Luigi, Mario Paint, Dr. Mario, Mario and Wario, Mario vs Donkey Kong, Mario RPG, Paper Mario, All the cross overs like Mario & Sonic, Smash Bros, all the other characters games, Luigi's Mansion, Donkey Kong Country, Wario Ware Inc.

If this minecraft fan-game is bad is not because it doesn't have the core idea of the original, but simply because is not well-made. And trailers are always intended to look good, for me in particular, the first impressions of it seems pretty entertaining but I would have to play it to see whether it is good or not, thing I won't probably do since I'm not into minecraft.
I'd play the hell out of a top-down exploration game that took the whole block-breaking thing into account. but that'd take effort.

I wanted to toss in my two cents and bash this game too... But it's clearly someone's first or second game, and I admit the concept is interesting, including where the background / chipset came from.
Good idea, but it needs a lot of work. Everyone starts somewhere...

You might like Dungeon Crawl. It... still needs to be finished, and don't let the name fool you - it's more a rogue-like than a dungeon crawler. But it's top down, there's wall breaking and exploration and treasure and multiple endings (when I actually finish it. :/ )

Of course, I mean that when done correctly it's interesting to take a fan-game and spin it on it's head into a different genre. If I didn't prefer making RPGs I might have done something like this for my BoFII fan game.

Yeah, I've played a lot of worse-looking games than the one shown in this thread. A hell of a lot worse. At least most of the words are spelt correctly and it hasn't devolved into leet speak. (Yes, I have played terribad games where all the dialogue was leet speak. And they were serious game attempts too. orz )

I guess people judge against the worst that they've played. On the one hand, it's great that people have higher standards because it means they've only been exposed to decent games. On the other hand, it makes it harder for them to appreciate the good parts of bad games because all they can see is bad.

Graphics, as a whole, don't fully dictate whether a game is good or bad and in this case I think the creator should definitely go with custom blocky tiles. Even if they're all just flat colours, it's interesting and different. Of course, it has issues as it is, but there's promise there with some polish and if they actually tried to make everything fit together properly, instead of being a mish-mash, it could look pretty good.

Gotta say I do like the battle backgrounds a lot though. And the monster graphics.

It's a decent shot at what I assume is a first or second game.

I've played some of the worst RM games in existence and I still have high standards. :[

Okay, that one was pretty bad, but I'll see your bet and raise you a Megaman GX.

I saw this guy before. I think he looks and sounds like Jeff Bliss, for some reason. :P
Before minecraft became so popular, I remember seeing someone make a RPG in it. I don't know how it worked really, I suppose he/she crafted towns, caves, etc. in minecraft and kept his server open for others to enter. Then one would venture vistas created and try to get to supposed final area.. Not a bad idea really. Only I don't know if you can properly create NPC's (you know talking ones) to get a proper story rolling..
