You're right; it's going to take some time before that happens. All of my friends are in the same boat as me: "Why does Console gaming still exists when we have our smartphones to play games with?" And sure, a lot of them still play around with their Xbox's and PS3's, but even they admit that the day is coming. I wouldn't be too surprised if that happens. Until then, enjoy your brand new consoles! Muahahahahaha!!!
I doubt it will happen. What will happen is that stationary consoles will become slightly less popular and maybe even more standardized. Also the way the Xbone is going into the media center that the PC never became might also be the way these things go. Where essentially a console is all the TV in one box and it can also play games.
Gaming on a TV is such a different experience from handheld gaming (which is what mobile gaming is. What I do think is going away is dedicated handheld gaming systems, there is virtually no room for those anymore). Theater did not go away when the cinema was introduced, cinema did not go away when home video was introduced and home video did not go away when video gaming was introduced.
Though sure. Eventually things will go away completely. There's not a lot of vaudeville going on these days. Or vinyl records for that matter. And there's not really porn on the silver screen anymore either. Certain niches will go away when what was once the main (and only) attraction become one of many attractions.

that's why I think this is such an interesting move: the gamers who would have bought an XBONE would have bought one no matter how this reveal went, unless it turned out to be another Wii U or something. through this, they're challenging a much newer niche in the whole home multimedia deal, and if it works they'll expand their audience considerably.
this is how consoles are going to survive. you have a couch, you have a TV, so a console is going to need to be able to do everything that a chair and a computer desk can't provide.
it's also made a couple of very sharp predatory moves against the OUYA and the PS4 that I think are kind of hilarious (doing the same pc-games-on-the-couch thing the OUYA purported to do but actually working, and using the same processor as the PS4 so most PS4 games will also get an XBONE release) and should be interesting if they work.

I believe it mean Wii U is going to poop Xbox One while PS4 dances in Wii U's feces, turning people off from all three resulting in PC taking over the gaming market.

Pretty self explanatory. PS4 came in running, Wii U is a telephone pole that PS4 gallops past. Then Xbox One is like HAI GUYZ! And joins the race only to fall flat on his face.

as for me I'm making my decision after both of them have come out. there is some neat stuff and some lame stuff and I am interested in seeing where it goes instead of racing to the nearest possible conclusion that gaming journalism will allow me to have

At the very least, it seems like both consoles will be pretty close in processing power so multiplatform games won't be dragged down by a weak link.
I think the bigger thing is the architecture of the two will be similar. Instead of POWERPC vs Cell and different memory layout they're both x86/64 and use shared memory. Hopefully it'll help with all the ports so that Sonic 2016 for the PS4 will get the gondolas the Xbone version has! (also ports to pc, the less awful ports like GTA4 the better for everybody)

While speaking to a friend yesterday about it in person, I only referred to it as x-bone. Microsoft should follow the internet trend and just pronounce it x-bone as well.
I wonder how many millions were spent in coming up with a name that can be shorted to XBone.
