Hmm, good point!

I'll go with Iron Giants then! They are just badass, and can do some actual damage!

They over complexed up the design on Sin but I just liked that it was basically some huge flying whale. I think personally I'd have liked it better if this was really just some huge whale creature that just destroyed things because it's huge and caused waves and didn't really do it intentionally but still was a big menace to the world and they had to find out how to take it out for peoples safety while I guess some animal rights groups wanted to save it because it was super rare I DUNNO rather than... whatever it actually is. Some final summon thing involving Yu Yevon.

Speaking of underwater things though, some real life deep sea creatures are creepy/scary looking! You can just plonk one of those things into your game and it's an instant monster without needing to add more horns or whatever.

I like watching this Siphonophore for instance

Woah, four pages and not a single mention of Gilgamesh?

Or even Lady Yunalesca?
gilgamesh isn't a monster, he's the protagonist of the final fantasy series

Pretty sure that was 5. He says he's using the Excalibur, but it's really the Excalipoor.

Though, I seem to recall the Gilgamesh in FF8 having both Excalibur and Excalipoor has possibilities for his come-into-play trigger.

I think Ruby Dragons (FF8) are fun, since they're a bit cunning, though I think I overall prefer the enemy design in Persona/SMT games.

@Marrend and you are correct.

Oh thanks Marrend, I remember how much i laughed to that scene :)

Ruby dragon in ff8, was very important for acquiring strong magics, specially if you tried "no level up run" When laguna become a movie star :P.

I wouldn't say it was my favourite, but I thought the second fight with the Black Waltz #3 was pretty amazing. You're attacked by him with little warning and far from your optimum team so your first instinct is to panic, but then you see him spazzing out and twitching and just generally looking like a nutbag. It creates a nice contrast in what you feel/think about the situation, because you're not sure if you should worry or not.

Then the subtle touch that if Garnet is the only character left alive, he just completely breaks down and starts attacking himself; that's just a design gem. He's still following his "keep Garnet alive" programming, but doing it in a completely self-destructive and insane way that really brings the character to life.
Honestly? The behemoth. While bombs, cactuars, tonberries and other monsters are more iconic, the behemoth always appears when you know that shit's about to get real in terms of difficulty and/or story. Plus they usually always have strong as hell versions of themselves at the end of each game. A final dungeon in a Final Fantasy game without behemoths is no true Final Fantasy final dungeon.

Yunalesca is fun, because she's so cheap. Equip zombie and deathproof to Yuna, and give the rest zombie resist, and you've got a party she tries to kill, but you can just revive. If she hits you with zombie, you just wait until dead, and revive them.

Tonberries. Werk-werk low pitched chirping and in comes this tiny critter you can barely damage, that just waits... slowly... for you to try to attack. And when you give it your best shot, it KILLS you, either with a Karma attack (what? You thought you were so bad killing all those monsters? Time to die) or with a massively overpowered knife attack.

Plus it's so unbelievably cute. I made an animated Tonberry King using animated monsters, and it was so easy to make an adorable thing.

Lol, I remember those little bastards.

I remember first running into one, for the very first time, back in Final Fantasy VII during the final stages of the game. When I encountered one, I was like, "WTF is this!? It looks so easy & weak to kill!" Until I found out the hard way. X_x

Why is that the cutest of critters are always the most deadliest? WHY!?

Gotta agree with this in terms of favorite monster when it comes to how they impact the gameplay. Usually seeing a Behemoth signals a slap in the face to the player to get their shit together; my favorite is first seeing one in FFX, where one can easily OHKO a character with its Heave ability. Another notable example is in FFIV where it does nothing, until you hit it and it counterattacks your face off.
