So, the 3.x SRD had the core game, psionic and epic rules available free for download on the WotC site. The 4e SRD is a 60+ page list of terms you can use in your own commercial products.

This isn't a huge deal for me since I'm buying the books anyway, but, uh... man. I was hoping to get a character or two created before they arrived.

Discuss this sadness. :< :< :< :<
Man, yeah, I'm with you. The SRD for 3e was a good step in the right direction for Open Gaming--they held back a few things to keep some "premium content" for paying customers (like Mind Flayers and Beholders and such), but gave everyone a framework to work within.

I mean I suppose it's at least nice that they're still letting people use some of their ideas without being bitches about it, but why take a step back? Was the SRD hurting their sales on 3e?

Well, I know that Marcus never bought the books because of the SRD. I doubt that would be the main reason, however; the 3.x SRD was a bunch of rtf files that were split up and hard to search through. Lessened the amount of stuff you had to carry around, yeah, but not ideal.

I'm sure we'll see similar arguments to this one on the biggie forums (EN World, RPGnet), hopefully on the gleemax (WotC's own forums) as well. Maybe they're going to wait? That seems silly, though; they already introduced the basic rules and character generation stuff in the Keep on the Shadowfell adventure last May, and people have already started compiling info. I have a pdf on my laptop right that has enough rules, lists and monsters to easily play through 3rd level with a pregen party from the WotC site.

MODIFY: Granted, if I were to run a quickie-campaign with these rules, I'd just wind up using the 3.x shops for longswords/rope/etc... but if somebody didn't have those books, the 3.x SRD is still available on the internet. =D
I thought you said you didn't even PLAY D&D, Craze?
I don't understand this at all.
