Most FF fans think FF7 was the best, it's the most popular FF ever with many sequels and even an animation. But there are some people who think FF8 was the best.
I think people who think FF8 was the best have a different perspective of how a game should be.
Personally I am on FF8 side, but I am not sure why
Please explain your choice a little and maybe add what you think was it's weakest aspect,

Maybe they didn't play Final Fantasy 6, 7, 9, 10.
Yes, anyone who thinks Final Fantasy 8 is the best hasn't
played the other games. It's the only possible conclusion.
I do think 8 is better than 1, 2, 4, 5, 10-2, 12, 13.
What a better question is, is what's up with all the
FF 4 fanboys?
I played FF 6,7,8,9,10,12 and I too think FF8 was the best of them...
The battle system was fun, the story and music were great, characters were great, great graphics, unique places and it had different scenes which you always remember, like stuff about friendship, love, dramatic scenes, scenes with tension and so on...
If I think about it I remember the train scene, the garden battle scene, the space scene, the parade, the ending and so on... every scene greatly made...
My opinion:
FF6 comes second place also with great music, story, characters, battle system and love in every detail..
FF7 dunno didn't like it... played it some years ago and cannot remember anything at all.. music wasn't good either... except for some pieces... also I don't remember clearly but the battle system could also have been boring... didn't feel a thing when aeris died...
FF9 dunno was kinda boring... nothing special... didn't like some characters... can't remember any good music in it...
FF10 comes third place... had scenes to remember... music was ok, good characters, story and battle system... unique places...
FF12 ... wait... did I really play that game... oh right... it was boring and dull... but hey I can remember more of it than of FF7 oO;;

LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

WHERE IS NONE OF THE ABOVE OPTION, THIS POLL IS RIGGED
minigames are the only thing that isn't the worst of all FF games
and really the primary draw of triple triad was simply that it let me not play FF8
sorry kyrsty
(someone move this topic to videogames plz)

Reasons why FF 8 isn't good:
1) You need to draw magic.
2) Magic is used to enhance abilities.
3) You have 100 of a spell and if you cast
it, it lowers your stats because its equipped.
4) You equip GF's and they allow you to do things.
5) Summoning GF's is slow and painful.
6) The main character is a loner.
7) Your girlfriend slept with your
arch rival and who knows who else.
8) The arch rival probably sleeps
with the sorceress, who is like a mother
figure to everyone else.
9) There is no reason to care about killing
the final boss at all.
10) Equipping GF's is proven to cause memory
loss, but you continue to use them anyway, but
have no further side effects.
11) To play the Chocobo side game you need
to buy something else.
12) The card game doesn't even make sense.
13) Switching to the past story line with
those other characters is so boring. Who
cares about that story anyways. That guy is
a bigger loser than the main character who is
already the duchebag king.
14) The in game tutorials are painful to
watch.
I will think of more reasons later I'm sure.
It's not a fan topic, people who like a game, have a reason.
And why I asked about ff8? because I dunno what's the exact aspect of the game that I liked the most. A lot of people played this game so it's popular and can be subject to discussion.
discussing other games, to understand what we lack or should achieve is not a game design subject? or you saw so many ff fan topic that you can't see the point of the discussion? or maybe I can't explain myself.
At any rate,
edit: One more thing, If you lack any information please don't post anything, because you are just trolling. and please don't argue about ff8 or ff6 or whatever other ff, I just want to know what is the main reason why people loved ff8.
edit 2: @ kory_toomb : I played ff1- ff 12, played ff8 for 10 or more times, but couldn't convince myself to play ff7 more than twice. That's why I think there is distinct difference BTW ff8 fans (as the greatest ff ever in their view) and non ff8 fans. We are not here to convince each other, because its just a preference, personally I don't think ff8 achieve anything, story wasn't the best, battle system was not something very special, and so on... . But I still think it's the best, I just don't know why I think like that.

Top reason I like FF8 might just be the nostalgia factor. You know, pretty much anything was cool when you were a kid, so.
I really like the soundtrack and the setting though, but that aside the game doesn't have much merits. You could try to compare it to the other games of that time though. These days it's probably just the fanboys liking it for the nostalgia reasons.

I thinnk that maybe the most important factor is that Final Fantasy 8 was the first FF for many people. That's usually why older people like FF6 or FF7 better. It's just like Happy mentioned above me.
Nostalgic? that's not good, at least I don't like it, that make the whole discussion pointless. I don't think it's true, there is something more.
personally I chose risk and reward, you could do so much with low health and you could die so easily. magic was completely removed and take a support roll, all you could do was to make the right decision before the battle start. Story, battle system, and everything else was not really that much good (in my view). mini game was very good too, it wasn't overwhelming like ff10, still the reward of card game was worth the trouble.

author=LockeZOh, this poll is for people who think FF8 is the best FF game (as the title said it), If you don't think it's the the best you don't need to vote. At the end the result MAY help me to find out why I liked ff8 so much.

If you don't understand why you like something and instead need others to give you a reason to like it, maybe you don't? Maybe you just cling to it because you don't want to accept the fact that some things aren't as good today as they were yesterday. A poll designed specifically for those who share the same blind devotion to a game that you do will only tell you something about the game you should already know; and to dismiss all other opinions as invalid is counterproductive to any discussion posed on the internet.
Take Super Mario 64 for example; that game sucks nowadays, but was once so good that it was one of the main reasons to even purchase a Nintendo 64. The only people I've seen that are still madly in love with it are also those who come across as blind to progression. They forgive the game for its bad character and camera controls and claim that it "just needs getting used to," but if I can't jump into a game the same way today as I did back then, it has aged poorly. It's just that simple.
If you can't identify in your heart why you like FF8, then it may be time to find another game. It shouldn't even be that difficult, as this game had absolutely nothing that can't be found in a different game of either the same era or that has come since then that didn't do it better.
EDIT: Also, just because:
FF9 > FF5 > Every other FF blows equally
screw all of that
FF10 > FF4 > FF3 > FF5 > FF7 > FF8 > FF6 > FF9 > FF12 > FF13
i don't have strong opinions on 1 and 2.
A lot of people don't like FF8 because of the draw magic system and GFs, but those aren't as bad as people make them out to be. Especially the draw magic.

mario 64 sucks?! :<
Anywho, yeah, nostalgia is a HUGE factor for an older game's popularity - unless it is a genre defining game like Mario 64, then the love is justified.
Edit:
FF6 > FF7 > FF5 > FF4 > FF3 > FF1 > * because I haven't played any of the other FFs.

It is hard for me to pick a favorite, because they are all great, but I know FF13 and 13-2 are at the bottom of my list.
@Corfaisus Hmm, good point, as you and I said there is no exceptional typical element in game that stand above others
but witch game encourage you to fight with low health? and don't you think when you win a fight with 1 hp on all character you feel you accomplished something? I played more game that I can remember, but non could give me this. I didn't say I am blindly following FF8, I said I dunno exactly why I loved that game.
I am trying to understand the difference BTW FF7 and FF8 (through their fans) and it's definitely not only about nostalgic, I played ff6 when there was mass effect and I loved it but didn't liked FF7 no matter what.
I thought about this, and I wonder: maybe there are more elements in a game (in player view) than we thought, when I consider FF8 as a mediocre game in all elements as a developer why I consider it the greatest game as a player

so many bad posts.
a better topic title would be "what is good about ff8."
all rpg stories are cringe-worthy, and 8 doesn't disappoint.
8 changed a lot about the ff formula gameplay-wise, though, which makes it interesting. triple triad, junctioning, drawing, dismantling, etc.
these features gave you lots of options, even early game, which is usually stale for new playthroughs in ffs. there's more to abuse with previous playthrough knowledge.
a big reason people don't like 8 is because it's too different.

@LockZ this is my last warning, don't troll in my post. If you don't have anything to add, please don't post anything. you had the choice to read or not to read my post, you chose to read so at least have a little selfrespect. I think I am done too, with you :).
