"Do people REALLY act like this, especially as something as trivial as in a video game?"

While searching the "intertubes," I managed to stumble across a couple of "fan-reaction" videos when it came to the live unveilings at this year's "E3". While I must admit that "I" was definitely delighted at some of the showings, I found a couple of "these" types of videos to give me that utter feeling of embarrassment, like...really made me ashamed to be a gamer in general just with these teenage boys "screaming like a little candy, ass b**ch". Now, this is probably because I'm not as much of a gamer that I used to be (and I'm guessing the same can be said with pretty much all levels of media), but...how does somebody get so..."worked" up over something like this? Yeah, I guess it's normal to be all excited over a brand new video game that you've wanted to see for quite some time -- but is this your first initial reaction, to "scream" like a little girl all over it?

For example, when "Mega Man" was unveiled as a new playable character in the new "Smash Bros" game, I definitely had a smile on my face and said to myself, "All right. 'Bout bloody time," and proceeded to move on my merry way. I never went all "ape-shit" over him being in the game despite him being my most requested character. But with the way this kid goes all over it...pretty much puts my general reaction for him being in the game to shame. Is there anything wrong with acting out like this? Maybe I just don't quite understand, growing up in a household with all men and being centered around the universal fact that there's a difference between acting out your emotions -- and actually "really" acting your emotions.

But for his defence -- including others of this sort -- what about when people, like me, get all "excited" about a stupid hockey game, or a basketball game? Isn't that same? Well...I guess so. But even I wouldn't go as far as to get "this" excited (unless my team wins a championship). Or maybe...that's just normal for someone who cares as passionately about his love for video games.

What do you guys think? Is there anything wrong with acting like this, pulling a "nerdgasm?"

(BTW, I had no idea that word existed until tonight.)
He's a kid. Kids act like that. My 13 year old brother jumps up and down like a spaz when he's excited too.

I am 14 and I don't jump around like a spaz when I am excited...

I can't really get into the new mario games these days, probably because I hate the recent Nintendo consoles.
I don't react like this, but I react like a poker player to everything. So, I dunno.
The only game that I was genuinely excited about for several years was bioshock infinite. When it came could I calmly went to the store, bought it, enjoyed it, and now it is complete. I'm pretty sure I have never screamed over a video game at any age. Pokemon Blue was pretty fuckin exciting when I was in first grade, but I don't believe I ever left the ground over it.
Does anyone remember the N64 Kid? Don't really feel like linking it because it made ME feel a little uncomfortable myself, but it's a similar reaction. I've had plenty of "nerdgasms" as they're called, but I don't like... jump and scream. I've squee'd plenty of times! Like when Sega announced Project Diva F for the West (I squee'd and flailed my arms and all sorts of things). But like... yeah, it's really the same thing as sports fans or movie fans or what-not. You feel strongly enough about something, your body physically reacts in a way that allows you to have emotional release.

I guess I keep forgetting that he is, in fact, still just a teenager and most teenagers still act like little kids most of the time. I guess my adult mind doesn't quite grasp that with me being, you know, an adult myself.

I think the only time I've ever gone all "nerdgasm-like" is probably when the New Orleans Saints won the Superbowl a few years back. I guess you could say that going all "nerd" during certain sporting events and gaming go hand-and-hand; I guess they're just perceived rather differently because, you know, sports are seen as more mucho and more accepted to go all emotional when your team wins where getting all excited over a particular game can still seem a bit strange to most. I guess that philosophy will change over time...

No offense intended, but I think stigmatising the way people react and behave is idiotic and another sign of how utterly suppressed our society is.

Feel free to get excited about something- but only to a certain degree or you're an embarrassment.

I didn't do this when I watched the KH3 announcement trailer but I'm pretty fricken excited. I did run around the house and tell everyone KINGDOM HEARTS THREEEEEE. I have done this with many things. If I'm watching or reading something in a series I might do it once a week.

It's normal for me, but my whole life I've been told not to get so excited over things. Why? Why can't I be hyper-super-duper excited to the point where I'm screaming my lungs out because I want it right now and I want to play it consistently for three days without sleep? Why can't I be crying in unsuppressed joy because someone wrote an amazing fanfiction about my favourite pairing which was beautifully written and had glorious smut? Because society says so? Fuck that.

I'm gonna scream and cry and run around like a headless chicken, dammit. Some people don't, some people do, but I don't think we should be judging either party because of how they enjoy what they enjoy.

This is true; but this is also because sports fans are usually more socially 'on the level'. The mass chaos with bonfires and the turning over of cars that usually comes with a World Series or a Superbowl is expected in a way because in socially general terms most people enjoy sports (or a sport) and given that a sports fan can be found in any type of individual, most people can relate to them.

Until very recently, and even now (its an ongoing social evolution) video games were squarely in the 'nerd' category and getting emotional or excited over them was seen as strange because people who like video games were/are usually also seen as strange. This is true; a lot of the gamers I know generally are pretty strange people, (as in like, socially maladjusted) but this is a changing demographic as gaming becomes more of a normal hobby.

I don't see what's wrong about it. He's just being excited about seeing new games he wants to play.

Lol.

Brother: Mom, why is my sister acting so weird?
Mom: She's forgot to take her meds again, dear.
Dad: *sigh* ...I'll go get her before she pisses off the neighbours again.

You do have a point, Kyrsty. I guess if you're excited about something and can't contain yourself -- go ahead and let it out (just be careful not to piss your neighbours off). ^^

Perhaps he's my estranged, long lost cousin. ^^
