The thought struck me, and I'm curious as to how people interpret this. Because it's the number one quality I expect to get out of an RPG.

Let me make clear that this is a separate thing from story, characters, game mechanics, exploration, graphics, or whatever. And yet it is a combination of all those things that creates this phenomenon. All RPGs that are worth their salt should be able to communicate some sense of adventure. And exceptional ones know how to make it a memorable one.

I picked the Dragon Quest series since I figure that we're all at least somewhat familiar with it. My personal pick would be DQII.
DQ7, because that game is big, oh wait, let me say that again, IT'S FUCKIN' BIG!! Seriously, the first time I beat that game was like over 100+ hours. >_>;
DQIV was just so... epic. 5 chapters, each with its own set of heroes, a great villain, world changing events, an airship, giant walking stone statues, CASTLES IN THE SKY... this game had it all.
Despite never beating it, or any except DW1, I'd probably roll with 4 on that list. The multiple viewpoints and each having their own adventure (Talloon
) probably helps with that.

I really should work on one that I've started. I got a game in 4, 5, and 6 that have a few hours sunk into them at least so I can say I did beat another DW than 1.
Journey of the Cursed King, by far! I loved the hero's design and the music

I would vote if I'd played more than just 3 and 8.
Out of those two, I'd pick 8.
Hero's Realm.

Oh wait, that's not a DQ game? Damn, could have fooled me.

For me, DQ games have always tried to "one up" their previous game. Starting with the second one, and the introduction of multiple parties, the games have improved.

DQ 3 introduced day/night concepts and a whole second world to explore, and DQ 4 began the tradition of story development, chapters, and plot twists. So for me, these two games (first introduced in 8 bit) get my highest respects, because I think it helped drive the later games. While everybody talks about how much better Final Fantasy was compared to the first DQ game, none of the NES Final Fantasy games could hold a candle to DQ 3 and 4.

And while I'm at it, DQ 4 really pushed the limit as far as detail while still maintaining its 8 bit simplicity and charm. If ever anybody creates a ripped version for VX-Ace, I'll be all over it like maggots on spoiled meat.
