Besides, those that DO fire off a magnum opus on the first try are the (very rare) exception, not the rule

I knew since Day 1 my first game would not be pro caliber, and I will more than likely have some growing pains, but that's the reason I joined--to learn from others that have more experience than me, and as I get better, I can help others that are just beginning
I can't speak out of experience with creating games, but this pretty much the perfect attitude to have going into anything in life. Keep it up c;

you are secretly hoping to fire off a magnum opus on your first try, aren't you? ;)
It'd be cool if I did, but that's probably not going to happen
The best advice I can give is this: open a new project and try out every command in the event area. Then do the same with the database. Check out the sample maps and edit them to learn a bit about mapping and how the tiles work (when you create a map, instead of clicking on Create New Map, look for the Load Sample Map option).
Lastly, make your first game small and simple. Just to get yourself familiar with not just making the game in general, but also how to 'sell' that game on forums and sites, learning how to present it and what works for you.
That aside, welcome! ^.^

Welcome, Diamond! RMN is exactly the place you want to be since you're just starting - it's got a lot invested in improving gam mak of its users.
