XENOMIC'S SPRITE THREAD! GASP!
Posts
Man, I know it's been a while since I last done anything on this, but I didn't think it's been 5 weeks. Oi vey. x_x;;
In any case, while internet was out, decided to touch up on this hand (no gun yet). Left is new, right is old. Think it looks better now?
If it looks better, then MAYBE I can start with the pistol. Still need to touch up on breasts too, and then I'll be done finally >_>;

Long time no see! Has it really been almost a year since I last did anything here? My goodness! In any event, I've decided yet again to try my hands at spriting, doing a sprite for a buddy's OC since he was nice enough to do a commission for me. Right now, only got an outline of part of the body (no shading or anything quite yet):

May is there simply for reference, as the character is also 5'2". The character being this lovely lady here:
Those are actually all the references I'm using too. I don't really have any others to go by ha. I know that the right foot (artist's right) isn't right, and the space between the legs is off. I also feel I need to lower the top of the pants down a bit since that's too high on her too. I'm also not sure how to fix up the pouch thing but...so far it doesn't seem TOO bad for an outline, especially for not doing this for a year. @_@;
Spriting is hard, didn't you know!? >_< Feedback/criticism/help is more than welcomed~

100%:
200%:
I ended up using May's leg more than I'd like for that left leg, and I also moved the leg over to the right a few pixels. I think it looks a lot better now? Doesn't look nearly as broken as it did before. I'm still not satisfied with the cuffs on the bottom of the pants though. They don't feel right, but alas, that's something I can fix up later if I don't have to fix anything else with the legs, since there shouldn't be anything else getting in the way of that like hands or anything. Maybe the baton holder itself, but hopefully not!
Also, I am not sure how to handle the pouch at all. I don't think anyone has anything I can use as a reference for it. @_@;

Breasts, my mortal enemy. Never was good with those. I dragged over parts of May to help with outlining, don't think the arm is gonna stay that way. Not sure on the pose still yet. I was also NEVER good with the torso proportions (if my earlier drawings that people may have seen is any indication to that), so it's going to look...wrong there for sure. But yeah, very slowly getting through this. Guess it's going to end up more of a replica of May than I'd like it to be. : S

I...I tried. I'm not exactly 100% happy with how it came out but...at least the breasts look right now? >_>; That middle part is a pain in the butt and I've no idea how to deal with it. Nor how to handle the white part of the collar. I don't even know if that's the right place FOR the collar even. >_<
mmm, the breasts still look a lil funny to me! Idk if she is supposed to have differntly sized breasts or if that's an optical illusion, but atm it looks like her left breast is larger than her right due to the patterns over them, as well as how tight her shirt is! If you look at the reference you have next to your work, you'll see that her top doesn't cling to her breasts the way your pixels are set up. I'd recommend unironically looking at photos of people's breasts in tight shirts to see how it looks! It's defs best to study from life when you're unsure how a thing looks.
Good work and good luck!

Well, May's clothes are much baggier than Nala's (which is based off of the image references earlier in the thread too). That's just how her shirt is in general. ^^;
But yeah, I may need to do something about that black pattern/pocket thing or whatever that's supposed to be. >_<

I'm assuming you know bones and muscles. Remember that the pectoral mass extents from the shoulders and across the chest. The female's pectorals act just like the male's pectorals. The breasts are an additional mass that hangs on the pectoral. They don't have their own muscles. Their position is informed by the pectoral mass, so try and remember the direction those muscles are moving.
The breast mass flows with the pectoralis major into the armpit. Now, the body is symmetrical. So the breasts should be, for the most part. Now, on a real woman, the breasts rarely exactly match, and for the case you show, that extreme of a mismatch happens sometimes, but rarely is THAT noticeable and it's almost never noticeable when clothed.
From the side, we have an upper plane and a lower plane. Small, perky breasts gently descend and the lower plane gradually folds back into the body. Large breasts have more mass and cause the lower plane to drop creating a curve.
Remember that the ribcage is round, so the breasts extend out at a 45 degree angle.
And remember that the breasts are part of the pectoral and extend from the shoulder, so if the arm moves, so does the breast.

It does, actually. The right side looks like it's got some anti-grav going on, but that can be solved by straightening the line that's coming from the shoulder. Remember, the upper portion is a plane, not a curve.
Hmm...like so?
For reference, I decided to look around for someone that had a "large" bust, as Alan said Nala had a large bust size, and the only GG character I could find that would remotely help was Dizzy in terms of size. The rest was me just trying to adjust the lines and such. I'm assuming this at least gives the illusion of a large bust size to Nala.
If that's fine, then the next thing for me to fix up is...that middle section. I was thinking of looking at Lilica's sprite since she's like...the only one I could find with a zipper on a vest, but dunno how useful that'll be here. I think the zipper (which is what that ugly thing just under the first block of gray in the center is) is fine in the size maybe, but I'm not sure what to do with the center under the zipper...
I'm also thinking of using Sol Badguy's collars as reference. The left collar actually doesn't seem that off, but I wasn't sure on how to handle the collar on the other side. I probably should finish the head outline first before tackling the collar though maybe...?

Well, it looks like the face is going to obscure the collar on the other side. Ordinarily, you would draw the inside of the collar on that side, and from the shape of it, I'm not even sure I'd worry about folding it in. Then see how much of it the face is going to obscure, which it looks like it's going to obscure the whole thing.
It probably will as she's looking downwards a bit/her head is lowered. I'm still not sure what I'm doing with the sprite overall, just going with it as I go with it. ^^;
So I'm assuming that since you said nothing about the breasts that they're fine now? If so, then I need to figure out next how to handle the pockets on them I guess alongside the other stuff mentioned. Hmm...

You may want to put the pockets a little higher than you did before. Like, not bra level. That might make it a bit easier.
Truth be told, I'm...honestly not even sure if those ARE pockets and are just a design of the vest like the black straps on her shoulders (which I also need to fix up somehow). All of the art I'm seeing is pretty much where I had it originally. : S
I think what I CAN do with the middle part is just make it ONE line. It doesn't need to be as thick as it is. In all of Alan's version, that middle part of the vest is like 2 lines thick, but most everyone else goes with 1 line.
Oh, and in the event I didn't link this for whatever reason, all of the references for the character that I am using:

Oh! I see. Yeah, there doesn't seem to be any real way of telling what those are.
Okay, depth is where I get in trouble...but, there are a couple of simple rules we can follow. If we remember that the breasts are at 45 degrees, then we know that the one closest to us is nearly facing us, and that the one on the right is facing away. This way, we generally know where the nipple and areola should be and we can use that as a reference. So the "pockets" appear to start under the breast and travel up to the center. On the right, that pocket is going to have a bit of curve following the breast. The one facing us though, will be almost straight, but maybe slightly smaller at the bottom but having a bit of a bulge as it comes up.
This probably isn't going to be perfect, but something like this.

Hm...so ALMOST what I was trying to do before but needs to be done better and probably at the right spots. Got it.
EDIT -
I think that looks just about right now! So with that said, now I...have to deal with the zipper and middle of the vest. I think I will go with just one white line down the middle, just like Lilica's vest does mostly (or ya know, what it probably would look like).

Looking a lot better now yes? Breasts were fixed up, same with pockets. Zipper was touched up, and slimmed down the center of the vest. In addition, tried to fix up the black...patches...things...on the shoulders, and struggling trying to get the top part of the zipper done. How do you do ovals/circles in pixel format!? >_<
After that's touched up, I'll probably start outlining the head/arms, which should be fuuuuun. Especially since arms are one of my worst points outright. Or maybe I should try to do something about the pant cuffs...>_>;

Well, at least she doesn't look like a May copycat anymore? ^^;
Btw, the hair was done completely from scratch, no bases used. I probably could've used Jam and Baiken a bit, but didn't think I needed to. Hair is usually one of the things I can do fine in pixel format for some reason...of course, there's still some issues here and there but yeah. Also, not sure how to handle that right eye at all...dunno if I did it right or not. >_<
But hey! It's coming together at least? ^^;
So, I'm thinking of doing something similar to Sol's pose with the arms. Problem is? Sol's arms are way WAY beefier than May's, which may be a bit hard to size down properly due to the muscle tones. I'm also thinking of trying some other arm poses, but not sure which ones would be good. I'm thinking one hand should have the baton in it, and the other with nothing but....I got nothing. For today, not much got done. I got so far as to copy May's left arm because...it felt like it was a good stopping point where I stopped as I can do the upper arm in whatever pose from there if I so desired. The right arm I was thinking of just having it have her hand on her hip or just in a pocket like Jotaro but I'm not really feeling the proportions on that arm at all. It looks really, really awkward. And why yes, I did try to visualize the way the arm would look. Though visualizing and then doing it is one thing (planning it out like Steve's showed me is another thing I just can't do as I'm not great at doing body lining like that T-T ). Anyone have any good suggestions or bases for this??
Also, I haven't sprited the pouch for the baton on her left side because don't know if anything will be covering that or not. That's another thing I'm also still unsure of how to do...but overall, slowly getting there. I kinda want to do the shading but I'm holding off due to the arms not being finished. By the way, if anyone wants to touch up on the sprite, feel free to do so! And if anyone would like to attempt a Midnight Bliss for this lovely lady, there's actually an image in the reference link up above that has one such one, and could be a nice challenge for anyone that wants to try a hi-res sprite~ : 3
