Or Turn Based Strategies as many call them. Lets talk about them here. I recently ::) bought ::) FFTA2 and I gotta say this game is awesome. I hated FFTA for the annoying judge system, but now they added in some cushioning to it and put alot of benefits to it. Also it seems they have added the FF9 weapon skill system which is very dependant on gathering resources from side-quests and stuff, really love it. Plus the graphics are pretty sexy.
I actually really enjoyed pretty much every aspect of FFTA, even the "lost in other world" story had a big appeal to me. I thought the Judge system in the first added some nice strategy for the most part, every now and then when they banned Black and White Magic in the same battle really pissed me off. This was my real first game of this type, so it was all new and I instantly feel in love. What kind of other changes have they made (especially to the judge system/ Muti-Player)?
Yeah, i really enjoyed the tactic style battle system and basically every aspect of the game. :)
I just got Disgaea: Hour of Darkness again, because the only times I could play it before were when I borrowed it. Found it for $30 in the used games bin. Not every day will you find a game like that there. It's more a spreadsheet than an RPG, but there you go.

I've also played FFT, FFTA, and Vanguard Bandits (hilarious game; everyone should play it). Oh, and La Pucelle and Phantom Brave (but Disgaea is better than both).
Is Disgaea Hour of Darkness any good? I saw it as well but i wasn't sure whether to get it or not.

La Pucelle

I loved that game, the main character's personality was adorable. "YOU SUCK! I WIN!"
I am so excited to buy FFTA2 tonight and go take a long bath or something.

It'd be easier to answer that question if you had played any of the other Nippon Ichi tactical games. If so, the answer is: "Did you enjoy Makai Kingdom/Phantom Brave/Disgaea 2/La Pucelle?"

The Nippon Ichi tactical series is a bunch of games that play well among otaku who like a lot of challenging post-game content and don't mind practically no challenge to the main storyline, and probably people who are borderline obsessive compulsive. I thoroughly love just about everything NIS makes, for example.

Also, the otaku part is a pretty big sticking point. The games are very anime. They've got great voice acting and the characters are pretty lovable, but only if you aren't annoyed by over the top acting and general silliness.

NIS games are also fun for being able to set off situations where you can deal millions of points of HP damage with a single attack, and reward you heavily for doing so....by giving you EVEN MORE ways to deal EVEN MORE damage.
I've noticed a distinct lack of classics and some obscure bits in here, so I'll make a little list:

Tactics Ogre (retro!) and its sequel
Fire Emblem (all of them)
Shining Force I-III
Saiyuki: Journey to the West (obscure, but solid)
Vandal Hearts I-II
There's also a ton of newer tactics games on the PSP/DS, like Jeanne D'arc.

I am not counting the numerous (and horrendous) Idea Factory games that get released every other day lately.

I'm not a very big fan of the Nippon Ichi games - not really cause of the anime stuff, either. I prefer more traditional tactics games like Tactics Ogre and Fire Emblem.

Also, I have zero interested in FFTA2 since I've heard it's more of the same. Oh well.
I love Fire Emblem but I haven't had the chance to play many other strategy RPGs. Do any of these play like Fire Emblem with the whole "Finite number of enemies, no mission replay" aspect intact? For some reason I can't really enjoy them unless every experience point is as precious as diamonds.
Fire Emblem and Tactics Ogre for the win.

FE7 (Lyn/Eliwood/Hector) is my favorite, by far. I've played through it too many times.
FE8 (Eirika/Ephraim) is decent, but didn't have the same appeal as 7, because of the added random encounters. I kinda liked obsessing over perfect exp distribution in 7. 8 killed that.
FE9 (for gamecube, with Ike) seemed... Okay? I never finished it, not because I got stuck, it just wasn't fun enough to keep me coming back. I honestly don't know why.
FE6 (Roy) I played on a Rom, with a patch, and it's pretty much the same as FE7, without a few features. I'm near the end of it, but stuck on Zephiel. ;-;

Tactics Ogre: Knight of Lodis (GBA)... Was basically amazing. There are a lot of influences on damage and things that are ignorable, but if you take the time to actually think about it, it's a lot better for you. There are tons of weapons and armor things, a quest mode for treasure, multiple endings, and a very awesome secret character<3. C'est tres awesome.
I tried to play Ogre Battle 64, but there was ROMfail.

Advanced Wars seems decent, but I never could get into them as much.
FFTA just hurt me.

Also, Luminous Arc for DS was very enjoyable. Not quite as addicting (ussually) to me as FE or TO, but still worth a purchase, I think. Too bad my friends stole it from me. ._.
Tactics Ogre: Knights of Lodis was sort of weird for me. The first time I played it, I just didn't care much. Didn't get into it, didn't care for it, felt like it was an inferior FFT or TO.

...then I went back about a year later and played it again, and oh my gods. Everything just clicked, and it's now one of my favorite games on GBA, and even pretty high in my favorite tactical games....maybe above the first Tactics Ogre, which I still haven't been able to finish.

Euphorian: BLASPHEMY

I was lost in life until FE9/FE10 came along and showed me it's still worth living.
Hm. FE8/9 seemed to be experiments for incorporating new aspects. I just don't think it fell together in 9 as well.

As I recall, I'm at the start of chapter 14...ish. I just cleared the ship level with Astrid and Gatrie last time I played. Does it pick up soon, or is what I've seen so far par for it?

Well I think the best chapters of FE9 are 18 and on... but saying with a certain degree of reluctance that what you've played so far may actually be "par" makes me sad. I love that freakin' game man. Best played in tandem with FE10. And probably appeals more to people over 20... and who aren't "addicted to the nightmare."
I don't know what you think Addicted to the Nightmare is a reference to, but I have a feeling it probably isn't to what you think it is. :p I have no clue what over 20 has to do with it either.

I was pretty excited about 9 when it was first announced. And then, when I finally got my hands on a copy... It just... Maybe I had too high expectations? At the same time, I ussually prefer 2d to 3d (not entirely sure why, honestly), so in my own mind, it couldn't compete with 7.

"Over 20" means people over the age of 20 would like FE9/10 better in my opinion. ...

"Addicted to the Nightmare" was a below the belt jab at emo people, so if you were offended by that, I apologize. But the fact remains, there is very little that appeals to emo people in the whole fire emblem franchise, at least in terms of actual emo things like dark, misunderstood protagonists and what not.
I think it's interesting that every dark, moody character in Fire Emblem is an assassin. I've only played 6-10, but I can't think of a single exception to that. Even the shamans are usually pretty normal. MAYBE the shaman girl in 6.

I don't really know if Fire Emblem is better for older people, though. I guess I can sort of see it. The whole strategy games thing is sort of an older person genre, and FE is pretty hardcore strategy. More patience and the ability to learn from failure, I guess.
I know what you meant by over 20, I'm just saying I don't know why people over 20 would like it any more.

As for 'Addicted to the Nightmare', it has nothing to do with emo. But yeah, you're right. Fire Emblem's actually pretty generic in its protagonists actually. They're all burning lights in a world of evil, steadfastly cutting their way through to the end.
Dark, misunderstood protagonists would make a bad FE Lord. "Ah, crud... They took Ninian. My one true love is gone forever... I fucking give up, bitches. *stabs self*
...

Jabbo- Karel in FE7. Innes in FE8 (kind of, he was cynical but not so much dark or moody). Sophia was more just quiet and mysterious, I think.
