FILE SIZE OF RPG'S?

Just a simple question. Does the file size of games annoy you? If so, what should the standard file size for an rpg game be?
The file size of games never really bothers me but if the size reaches over 100 i will most likely only download it if the game is good and i know that i will enjoy it.

For me it doesnt really matter, but i like games that have a lot of data cause it shows me that they put a lot of work into there games. so its not that big a deal for me
I would actually disagree with that. File size does not change how much work was put into the game. The person doing it might not have actually carefully imported resources as they went along, and thus, maybe they just decided to copy all of their collections in. Or maybe they just use a HUGE POINTLESS PLETHORA of files that really they could have combined into many less. Possibly they even just included the RTP.
As for me, I'm pretty much the same as demondestiny, but I still will download the higher file sizes if it is a full game, or if the person is just really looking for feedback.

University internet. Thus, file size does not matter in the slightest to me. I would care about hard drive space, but my good computer has ~infinite and even this one has about 10 gigs. You can always delete the game later.
I care if I am downloading an hour-long demo that is 200 Megs.
I'll download something of any size if it's finished, however.

Also, I can now advertise my recent help thread! Oh boy! (god I'm bad for this0
If you visit this thread and download RMtool, you can neatly pack your game together, and prune out any unneeded resources very quickly. For XP games, I think RMXPtools has this as well, but I don't remember. However I do remember that RMXPtools can at least zip your game for you.

The file size isn't half the bother that actually downloading it can be. Games on Rapidshare and Megauplaod are a pain due to things like 'Wait one minute, input code, wait another minute, download (and if you failed to input the code right go back to step one with an extra minute of waiting)'. Avoiding those hosts (and any slow host so I don't download MP3 Quest and its 150 meg download at 5kbps) is good enough for me. I've got plenty of space available to download with good speeds.
The only reason file size matters to me is when it's over about 40-50 megs, 'cause I have dial-up so downloading doesn't happen much unless it's a torrent where it can resume at any point.
I think I remember a demo that was literally 10 minutes long, but the filesize was enormous because it included a freaking .avi cimenatic intro that was ripped from a commercial game.... yikes.
Complete (or lots of original stuff) + big = fine
bullcrap + big = not fine

Yeah, i've had my projects hosted on megaupload and rapidshare and it seems to turn people off downloading it. They just can't be bothered to wait 1 minute. :(
There's a limit of around 200MB unless I really like the sound of it, or its been recommended by a few people. I think 190MB was the highest RM download I've ever done so far and it was only a demo that didn't include any MP3's. Yikes.
Some people go "OMG 50MB, this better be good!" but I don't consider that big at all, unless you have dial-up I guess.

I consider it a favor to the people downloading a game that the filesize be small. I don't use any MP3s in my games (at least, not very often) and I've never had a filesize larger than 12 MB. And those are finished games, too!
I think most of this problem stems from people who include things they don't need to that beef up the filesize too much. RMTool does help with that a lot, though.

I don't mind file size. However it is kind of stupid on the Developer's part to load a game with useless Graphics especially if the graphics are not used. In terms of Demo's I like to cut out the useless stuff, cut away my uncompleted maps and delete the unused Character Sets and Tile Sets. It would be great if a Developer would really take the time to account for the size of Graphic and such, mainly to be considerate. However I for one could care less.
I don't really mind file size, because as mentioned before, you can always erase it.
And if it's a completed game and only has 14mb or something that small, then I problely won't try it cause it sounds already like it's a small, thrown together game that's not worth playing. I'm in to a long, deep, involving story.

But lot's of completed games are around that size and that's mainly because they don't have MP3 files and such in there game.
To me a large file size just shows inefficiency in the deployment of your game. WiiWare games have a 50MB cap. Why are there 2D RM games over 100MB?
Probably because they have a way to shrink the file size. It's like...why is a SNES game around 1 - 3 MB's, yet a RM game is 10x more then that.
On the subject, I too...do not care about the file size, the bigger the better the game! Besides, we live in a world with faster internet and faster downloads, A 100 MB game takes me around 6 min's to download, so waiting isn't all that bad. UNLESS!!! The game is total crap / very very short. Then we have a issue. :P

Uncompressed a SNES game like Secret of Evermore could be around 50-70Mb, or 6-9MB.

Its in the resposne to the 11th question.
I find non-MIDI music and sounds tend to be what drives up the size of games. I add the RTP sounds to my game to make it standalone and I make my game grow from 2MB to 10MB (to be fair there was some RTP graphics included, but all the RTP graphics don't match up to the RTP sounds). I'm not sure how much space sounds would take up on the SNES, but I can't imagine its very much (the sound would probably just be similar to music: Sound samples played like the music).
