YOUR GAME AND MUSIC
Posts
So, as to avoid clogging up another thread with talk about my own game, I'll be making this topic. As many of you may be aware of, one of the major issues with my game is the music. For example, let me put into perspective the differences between the RAR files for my game:
Game itself: 3 MB
Vanilla Music pack: 539 MB
Extended Music pack: 177 MB
(I don't know how the Vanilla Music Pack is so much larger than the Extended Music Pack, I really don't...).
So, for those who are curious, I have a lot of music in my own game (I have cut out a good 30 tracks or so a while back, but there's still plenty of other tracks in the game). You may be wondering, why not find MIDI versions of said songs? Mostly because they're remixes of Touhou songs, and aren't in MIDI format to begin with. Now, why not convert them into .OGG format? Because last I checked, 2k3 doesn't support .OGG format on its own (I hear people say convert their music files into .OGG a lot, but all I've ever seen is MP3, MIDI, and WAVE).
Due to the shear size of the music in my game, I tried to split it into Vanilla Music (the bare minimum amount of music that one would need in the game) and Extended Music (everything else that's not in the Vanilla Music pack would go here). As you can see...I still have issues trying to get the music into the Extended Pack. Why's that? Well, let's break it down a bit (this is for all of the music in my game):
Total tracks currently (this is for the entire game, not just up to beta4's end): 260
~24 event themes
~30 character battle themes (battle themes change according to who the current "party leader" is. Some of these battle themes are just the character's boss themes, but not always)
~118 boss themes
(The rest are mostly stage themes)
So yeah, you can see the major problem here for the most part. Most of MY music, in general, is meant to captivate the feel of each individual area and segment, where appropriate. For instance, trying to find a party member who's very important to the plot before the enemy does has a song that gives a sense of urgency and despair, and while it's a cave area this plays at, it wouldn't work for any other cave areas in general (for instance, going from the overworld to Makai has a more adventurous and epic feel to it, as it's the halfway point of the game, while going through a cave where kappas are supposed to live but nobody knows what happens to them or why they're there gives a sort of melancholic feeling to it). Most of the boss themes can probably be moved into the Extended Pack (though what's in the current Vanilla and Extended packs, I can't say now...I need to redo them anyways). Perhaps someone could help me out with trimming down this music with me?
So, how much music does YOUR game use? Does it only use 10 tracks? 100 tracks? Are they in .OGG/.MIDI/.MP3 format? Do you try to make each song fit in at specific places? Or do you just use them whenever, wherever? Where does one find a balance of where to stop adding music?

I use as few as ten, and as many as sixteen, tending to use the MP3 format. Songs usually fit a generic purpose. Like, one track might be for towns, and another might be for dungeons, and another track is my standard battle music, and that other track is my boss music. If there is an overworld map, that has a track too. There's been a few times when I choose a track for a specific situations. Such as tender moments (or hack attempts thereof), fighting a "repeat" boss, or that crazy-epic fight (or hack attempts thereof).
260 tracks seems to be enough for ten games rather than just one, to me. I understand that this, being based on a franchise, is going to have a lot of music to pick from, but to me this seems to be way too much.
The 118 boss themes is what sticks out to me. That's over three times the amount of character themes. Why must there be so many of them?
On how to cut down the filesize: Have you edited the songs into short loops? I cut the filesize of the music in my project in half just by going back through it and editing down the actual files to good loop points.

I use generally about 25 tracks at the most. A few for towns, a few for dungeons, etc. They mostly tend to be in MP3 and MIDI format.
You need to think, Xenomic, do you really need to use a new battle theme for every boss battle? Not every single boss fight deserves a new boss theme.
Let's take, for example, final fantasy 7. There's only around 6-ish tracks for bosses. And that's for the entire game. The only time the boss music deviates is when you fight a really important boss, such as Jenova and Sephiroth.
I can understand that you want to make every bit of your game unique. But there's nothing wrong with using common music for familiar points. Sure, a new boss theme is nice now and then, but you really shouldn't overdo it.
I would recommend doing away with at least 90 of those boss themes, and all but a few character battle themes.

@Unity: I have not edited the songs into short loops. I had someone loop a few tracks before, but that was mostly easy stuff there since it was simple to loop them (the tracks are still MP3 too but oh well...). But yeah, it is a lot of music (hence why I cut it into 2 music packs. The game itself gives you the option, both at the start of the game and at savepoints, to change the music type at any given time).
@Arandomgamemaker: I know, I just tried too hard to give every boss a uniqueness to them that fit at the time you fought them. Some bosses even have 2 boss themes (usually the 2nd one will play at the very last time they're fought). I DO have specific, generic boss themes though (one for all bosses that don't have an unique theme and/or isn't one of the guardians or fragments of Pandora, one for the guardians of Pandora, and one for the Fragments of Pandora (though a couple have unique boss themes themselves, those being Chaos (uses FFI's final boss theme) and Fate (uses a rendition of a playable character's battle theme).
I should probably axe a lot of the boss themes into the Extended Music Pack, aye. The character battle themes though probably won't really go away as that's something that I wanted to be unique with the game. Area themes...that's the tricky part too. Each area, save for a couple towns, use a completely different theme, including dungeons. So whether or not there's ONE good theme for specific dungeons (aka one for caves, one for forests, etc.) is up in the air, especially since I'm going for uniqueness in a way...
Again, if anyone would like to help trim out what songs aren't needed into the Extended Music Pack, that'd be greatly appreciated...

I apologize for the double posting, but figured this'd make better for a new post. This is all of the music that I found from my game in which are in the Vanilla Pack...

All I can say right now is that 118 boss themes is kind of really ridiculous. I know Touhou has lots of awesome music, especially themes for characters, and a TON of characters, but still. That's silly.
I think that for vanilla, you should just do the keep a set of standard battle and boss themes for reuse instead of giving every dick, jane, and mary a leader battle theme, and/or boss theme. I think that alone will cut down on the size significantly. Character battle/boss themes should definitely be something for the extended pack. ...Plus the vanilla pack being bigger than the extended pack kind of gives me a chuckle-
As for me...Hmn, the usual. I keep a standard battle theme, two boss themes that are used interchangeably, and a theme for every dungeon area. Beyond that are reusable themes for world map, town, tense situations, humorous ones, etc. Nothing special.

Yeah, I didn't realize it used THAT many boss themes in the vanilla pack...kinda silly. I guess I COULD make it so that the character-specific battle themes are played mostly in the Extended Pack (there's a few that'll have to stick around though in the vanilla pack, as at least 3 of them were there originally before the idea came about, and some special scenarios require the songs to still be there as there's no generic battle theme). The boss themes though...yeah. It's a matter of figuring out who will lose what boss theme though...
Most of Enelysion's 57 tracks are in .ogg format ( only 3 tracks come from commercial games though ) and that gives me around 138 mb or around 70% of the game's actual size. And I'd stay far, far away from the .wav format. File sizes are ridiculously large.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

If you have 118 boss themes I would assume you have a lot more than 118 bosses. Like, probably over 200.
And I'm saying this as the guy who runs boss design contests, spams up all the boss design threads, and writes articles about boss design: why do you even have so many bosses in the first place? That's a shit-ton of bosses. If your game is twice as long as Chrono Trigger, that's three bosses per dungeon.
Anyway, surely most of those bosses only have three lines of dialogue or less before they die. They don't need their own mood, other than "here's a poweful thing trying to kill you."
I 100% approve of changing the normal battle theme as the game goes on though. I can't even name a game where it didn't start to get grating after 300 battles.

Yeah, there's a looooot of bosses in this game. Actually, since you brought that up, I think I'll list how many are in each general dungeon of my game:
Hakurei Shrine: 0

I believe that's the gist of it for now? I may or may not have forgotten some here and there but...^^;; It's kinda how this game goes though, a lot of plot stuff happens between bosses. And really, none of the bosses have died up to this point (some have left yes, but several of these bosses are actually recurring bosses too). Others are pretty much one-time only aye.

So, if I've counted right, there are 107 bosses, some of which are recurring, and there are 118 boss tracks. Huh.
I agree with the advice of pick a general boss battle theme, a mini boss battle theme, and a BIG boss battle theme, and pick maybe a handful of boss battles that have their own unique theme. If you're afraid of battles with the standard boss theme not being unique enough, then that's a problem to fix through gameplay or storytelling; just slapping a new theme on them isn't going to do much.
As for which songs to cut, the idea of going through 260 songs for a franchise I'm not very familiar with to tell you which few are keepers and telling you to either delete the rest of them or move them to an optional download is not exactly an endeavor that I'm jumping at the chance to do, nor do I think many others would be, unless maybe they're huge Touhou fans with a lot of free time. This may be something you have to decide for yourself.
I completely agree, especially if the switch in battle themes happens after a plot significant or emotionally significant part of the story.

I 100% approve of changing the normal battle theme as the game goes on though. I can't even name a game where it didn't start to get grating after 300 battles.

Dude, there are a lot of Touhous. You can probably stand to either drop some of them or at least not repeat them.
Man, I'd been worrying about my (possibly) 30ish tracks... o_O

@Unity: I may have omitted some, and some of the tracks may be for later in the game (the game's still only 50% done, and I think I was looking at my current music selection too and not what was in the packs). I do suppose I have to decide for myself...I have been working on that slightly recently (since I've been more or less focusing purely on my art than anything else), but it'll still take a while to figure out what to do with them...
@Sooz: The game incorporates ALL of the Touhou characters, so dropping some of them isn't really going to happen lol...although the more recent ones (13.5 onwards) won't appear really (if they do, they'll either be NPCs or sidequest stuff. In fact, Touhou 13's cast is mostly sidequest stuff only).

Man, I know others have already highlighted this, but can't you recycle the boss themes for some bosses? Like, not all bosses are so prominent that they deserve their own themes, right? I mean, not every player is going to bother remembering the music themes of all 107 bosses. There are most likely a number of themes that people just won't care about. Just repeat some themes for some not-so-important bosses.
Really, like I said in the earlier thread, you need to learn to optimize your game and cut out all the unnecessary music files (Sacrifice them if you have to. You probably need to, though).
As for the stage themes, well, that really depends on how many stages there are. But like boss battles, there are possibly several stages that you can recycle some themes.
And ultimately, it's your game's gameplay and then story that really count, not the game music (in fact, sound and music are pretty much of lesser priority than gameplay and story), so don't focus too much on the music.

@Eplipswich: I know, I know...I just need to figure out what needs chopped out and put into the Extended pack. As mentioned earlier, I'm going to have to decide myself what to cut out and whatnot not. Bosses aren't a problem as again, I have a couple generic boss themes set out for them. Character battle themes won't go anywhere still. It's the stages in particular that I think is going to be the issue here, as I'm not sure what could be reused where exactly...it's kinda problematic in that regards. ^^;;
Right now, it's set to 483 MB worth of songs (113 songs). Still trying to figure out what needs cut out into the extended pack...hmmmm. I already moved SOME songs into that pack, but still need to figure out what else...

Of the many projects I’m working on, the game with the lowest amount of tracks used is 29 songs and the biggest one uses 150. They’re all in MP3 format at around 64 kbps so I can keep the memory down as low as possible without sacrificing too much of the sound quality.
When it comes to music or the quantity of tracks used, I always try to see if, A, what songs are required and are they significant to this game and, B, is it possible to cut a few tracks here or there or reuse a few of them for similar instances to save some space? You want to try and use as fewer songs as possible but you also want to use enough to provide a different audio experience for as many instances as you can. You want to go for the nice little balance between the two. You don’t need to have too much and you shouldn’t have too little; I guess it just depends on what type of game it is. For example, for the game that I have that has around 150 songs (which is considered a bit too much by regular standards, but I did decrease it from 400 to 150 because of size constraints and a few complaints by some users) has around 50 battle themes in total, not counting boss themes which only uses about 8. But since you’ll be in a lot of matches and most of the battle themes are unlockables that you can acquire by purchasing songs at the game’s shop, it provides a nice balance between listening to the same song over and over again and having a whole different array of songs to listen to. If I was making a traditional RPG, I probably wouldn’t use so many battle themes and try to stick to using as few as possible, but since that game is an RPG / simulation hybrid and quite a unique sort of experience than the norm, I think it works just fine.
So in retrospect, there’s nothing wrong with having a massive soundtrack but there’s also a flaw in having too many songs. You want a nice balance between the two and cut some of the dead weight here or there if you can. Remember, RMN can only host your games in a single folder of 450 MB’s max. You could upload two separate folders, one with the actual game and its content and the music separately – but it’s best to just include it in one. I always try to think of it as long as the game is under the 450 MB quota, then it’s fine by me. Too many songs and huge memory tags might turn off some players of playing your game or even downloading it altogether.

All of my stuff is on Mediafire since it gets updated so often so...that's why it's in multiple folders for me lol. But yeah, I hear ya. Like really, battle and boss themes are the EASY ones to deal with in terms of music. Unless you're like me where you want every playable character to have a battle theme and every actual unique, recurring boss to have a boss theme, then it's generally easy to just have 1-3 regular battle themes overall, and just 1-4 boss themes and that's that.
I think what makes the music part so hard is figuring out what to do for NON-battles. For example, event and stage themes, especially when one theme won't work for any other area or part. That's the main issue I'm having right now with cutting down music. x_x;;

671 MB total (317 for extended music, 314 for vanilla music, 41.2 for game itself). This is what I've managed to do finally for the game's current OST (note, this is NOT for the entire game. 260 songs, 1.08 GB is how big the music folder is for this game. Granted, some songs will probably go, others may even get included, but that's how it is so far). If anything, most of the stuff will go into the extended pack and not vanilla. I mean, I moved all but 3-4 character themes from the vanilla pack to extended, which was about 27 songs, if that says anything...
So yeah! It's more manageable now! On a sidenote, just how big of a file can this site host? And is that the limit per game or per person or...??
