YOUR GAME AND MUSIC
Posts
I generally use alot of songs in my games for variety purposes, but even then, I choose carefully so I convey the tone of the scene as best as possible. My game is set to have around 170+ tracks or so, but no more than that. I reuse several tracks if I happen to like them that much.
As far as size goes, I convert ALL of my tracks to .ogg so they're only around 1-3 MB, unless they're already under 1 MB in .mp3 form and converting would decrease the quality.
My current game by itself is 175-ish MB (data and graphics) so far, while the music only takes up around 294 MB, and even that's subject to decrease since I'm planning on removing some songs.
I'd overall say to have balance, meaning having a bunch of music is alright AS LONG as it compliments the particular boss battle or situation.

On a sidenote, just how big of a file can this site host? And is that the limit per game or per person or...??
Its 450 MB’s for one single file being uploaded. I remember because I asked Kentona about that some time back.
And it’s not limited by one person or game; you can upload as many game downloads as you want as long as it’s under 450 MB’s for each file. So you could do something like upload the actual game that’s like 100 MB’s and the music folder separately that’s around 400 MB’s if that helps things, but it’s probably better to include everything together for simplicity.
Ah, gotcha. Though that won't be until I finish EVERYTHING for the game...and then I'd have to worry about update patches if any...
Why would you need 170+ songs? I can't think of any RPG I've ever played that had that amount of songs, even 50+ hours.
Control yourself, people. You don't need a new song for every single map you make.

It is vitally important to my game that the music changes with each step the character takes.

Like I said, my decision isn't final; I'll definitely decrease the amount as I continue to work. I don't think it's particularly necessary to have a new song for every single map/boss/situation, I said it's fine to simply have a lot of music as long as it's varied and necessary for the situation. I stated somewhere earlier that I even reused several songs for some situations, so it's not like I have a compulsive desire to scour YouTube for a new track for every single new thing.
A portion of the tracks in my game's file vault are there for testing purposes anyway, to see which is most appropriate for the situation; it's very likely that plenty of the songs I have stored will be deleted if I don't feel they fit enough once I reach the end of production, so I'll probably have just 130 or even 110ish tracks at most. The only reason I have as many as I do is because my game, despite not being terribly long by the standards of most RPGs, deals with a whole bunch of different situations, and I feel it's unique to have an ample soundtrack so most of the scenarios have a bit of unique flavor. But even then, it's not just for what happens in the gameplay itself, maybe I'd use some of the tracks for the credits in case the player gets a different ending and wants to hear something different from the default credits song to have a feeling of accomplishment. Of course, like I also said, I don't go out of my way to find a new track for every single different part of the game I come up with, I'm fine with reusing tracks.
I guess I didn't word what I said very clearly at first, though, and I don't blame you for getting the wrong idea. I'm not the type of guy that has ADD and has to make every part of a production grand spanking new and have no correlation with previous parts.

There is just no fucking way you could ever need more than maybe 50 songs for a game around 10 hours and let's say +10 songs for every 10 hours your game is.
You do not need a new boss theme every boss fight. You do not need a new song for every new place you go. You do not need a character song for every single character in the game. I could go on but you get the idea.
In music, less REALLY is more.
It's better to have a really good tune replay a couple of times over the game, than millions of different tunes that you won't remember after it stopped playing. In fact, I would probably go as far as to say having too many different songs makes the game worse, since it makes the game seem sloppier and having less coherence and "theme".

author=SnowOwlI personally think that'd be a bit too little. 1+ song per game hour is a bit... egh.

author=SnowOwlLike I said, I agree with this. I DON'T add a new song for every single new area/boss/whatnot, I reuse several themes since I think a previous theme would work just fine with a similar boss/area depending on the mood. I even stated several times that a brand new song for every single situation is a bit excessive, which is why I don't adhere to that.

I just like a somewhat large OST is all. Nothing gigantic (like 200 songs, that's going a bit too far really), just a reasonably (the keyword here being reasonably) large selection. 170 songs is too much, imo, as I said before, so that's why I'm going to do the proper editing and whatnot and cut back when it calls for it so my BGM folder doesn't take up 3/4ths the size of my game file and isn't a mess of completely random songs. Hell, just now I removed a few tracks I didn't think were fitting and it's already down to around 150. And even then, I'm not stopping there as far as removing goes, there's no way in hell I'm keeping that many tracks in and calling it a day without making sure they're used sufficiently.
And I especially think I should really make this clear; there's quite an assortment of things that happen in my game, with often varying moods, so I think just around 90-100 tracks, but not much more, would be alright, JUST AS LONG AS THEY FIT THE MOOD; again, I'm not the kind of guy that simply throws in a track that I think sounds cool if it doesn't fit what's going on even a little. I actually really dislike OSTs like that. I think context is as big a factor in music and in media in general, including games, as much as anyone one else does.
If what you said is simply how you feel, that's alright. Opinions are opinions. It's the same way for me, my views are simply my views.
