I always pick the fire guy. There's not very many fire guys to capture, and way more water / grass guys. No brainer. :P
EDIT: But on the flipside, I always played with my friend. so we'd get far enough to trade, and trade one account enough starters until he had doubles of all but 1 starter. Then the other guy would get back his two traded doubles, and have the whole starter set in his pokeballs. It was sweet.

Completely disagree. I mean, yes, I do like new stuff, but LG and FR were incredibly well remade, and they did add a few new features. Aside from feature wise, many people were getting sick of all the newer pokemon, and just ended up playing their older games so they could stick with the classic pokemon. LG and FR offered this, plus some new pokemon.
ALSO, thanks to LG and FR, you can get all of your favorite classic pokemon onto your D/P pokemon game. This also encourages extra play of LG and FR, not to forget all of the other GBA pokemon games.
One last thing, This site has everything you need to know about pokemon.
And this site has everything you need to know about competitive Pokemon.
One of the other guys here is apparently the webmaster for Smogon or something. A few weeks ago he was complaining about having to set up new servers. I just thought that was kinda interesting.

I always picked water. I would have all water pokemon and dominate with all of them. Not even the grass or thunder trainers could beat me.
No surprise, there. Water has arguably the most defensive type diversity, with 2 water type families immune to electric (Swampert, Gastrodon), several neutral to grass (Tentacruel, Gyarados, Quilfish, Mantine, Kingdra, Pelipper, Empoleon, Palkia), and only 1 resistant to both (Ludicolo), but nearly all having decent enough type coverage and offensive capability to pose a threat (in their respective tiers, of course).
