FFX/X-2 HD
Posts
I preordered the limited edition (it`s going to be released on march 18th)and I'm pretty excited about it, for it's one of my fave games, period.
Yet looking at the videos...
They screwed up the expressions! And a few of the new palettes look horrible, too ):
At least it comes with Last Mission.
So, anyone else preordered it? Are you anxious?

Would you be terribly angry if I told you I'm going to prefer the original NON-HD version? I mean seriously, the eyes are totally frozen in place. It's a blank stare.
The emotive expression is gone!

I am so disappointed that they hardly animated the faces. I'm guessing they weren't able to export the facial animations to the new models (well, aside from the jaw rig), and they just kind of threw in some blinks? And in this scene I prefer the old lighting - the HD looks so flat, look at Yuna's hair piece! Ughh.
Nice models, terrible loss of subtle animation + crap lighting. If they knew any better, they should have just kept the old models and re-textured them. Seriously, if you knew you were going to lose the facial animation, don't bother - not unless you plan to re-animate all that lost data. It doesn't matter how awesome the HD looks when the acting's gone. Sorry, as much as I loved X, I'll have to pass on this one.

Exactly! They didn't take care to carry on the subtle facial expressions of the old version of the game. ):
The whole game is like this. Also, a lot of the hue shifting and shading present in the original are now gone. Granted, the hight ammount of contrast and saturation at times was unsettling, but the answer is NOT to remove every inch of dynamic lightning and hue shifting, now a lot of the scenes are gray and dull ):
Even the opening, it's dusk, the sun is flaming orange, lighting the whole scene to an orange tint. Yet in the remake, although the scenery is orange-tinted, the characters' textures don't reflect this ):
Gack, I dunno, this remaster looks beautiful but a little careless.
EDIT: On a positive side, the extra content in FFX-2 is HUGE (I think it's the biggest ammount of extra content in the series, although XII wins in most game-changing) and it is simply SUPERB. I mean, it comes with a roguelike not-so-minigame in the post-game.

Agreed - it was a great idea, just poorly executed. There are definitely a lot of beautiful additions to the HD, but the drawbacks are distracting as heck for me to watch.
I'll admit, I'm very tempted by all that extra content. Last Mission. Why!? Fff! I think I'll wait and consider experiencing this in a couple years. It's not a priority right now.
I apologize if I sounded harsh. The animator buried deep inside my soul is weeping. XD

I mean, your comparison is perfect. Look at the image on the left. Look at how intense Yuna's expression is. The eyebrows are more sharply angled. They eyes portray real, human, determination and all of the fear and courage that goes with it. The jaw is set. In the other image, her face is flaccid. The eyebrows are relaxed. She could be reading from her schoolbook aloud. All of the intensity and fire is gone.
Final Fantasy X was so different from all of it's predecessors that it was difficult to get used to. The passion behind the production, what you saw in the animations, heard in the actor's voices; it's what made this game. Now that the game and style are established, they've taken away one of the elements that made this game worth getting used to, worth playing through, and worth enjoying.

At least they didn't screw up the voice acting.
The music, though... I got mixed feelings
But I'll give the benefit of the doubt, since I didn't yet hear it from good enough speakers.
But that brass sounds awkward.
EDIT:
THE VICTORY FANFARE
I WANNA CRY SO HARD NAO
EDIT2: They better have the option to switch back to the original soundtrack @_@
EDIT3:
Tidus' theme doesn't sound too shabby, though.

I'm mixed on the remaster music. I totally get why they chose to do it - the natural instruments sound, well, interesting and sometimes even better. However, it's missing the charm of the original and some of the tracks leave something to be desired. The original soundtrack was a collaboration between Nobuo Uematsu, Masashi Hamauzu, and Junya Nakano. I believe only Hamauzu worked on the remaster. It's a shame. I think having the other two, the music would have retained the original feel or at least done a better job in the end. Their styles are so diverse that I don't think Hamauzu can do their tracks justice. This is all me speculating though.
I wanted to like it but everything I've heard about the remaster just sounds bad. The less said about the extra novels the better, the remastered soundtrack feels worse overall and the models?
No quality of life improvements or anything, just the same old game with somebetter fancier other models. I already have the original games and I don't see much point to getting the HD versions when I can use the PS2 emulator and get less awkward looking graphics with simple texture upscaling. I'll throw my money at Bravely Default instead.

Oh, god! I thought Yuna looked f***** up!
Still no cutscene skipping? That's sad. I remember how many times I had to sit through the scenes that played before the Seymour Flux and Yunalesca battles; over and OVER and OVER! I think I still may be picking this up though. I misplaced my copy of X a LONG TIME AGO and my PS2 doesn't really work all that well.
I also think that some of the remastered tracks lack that OOMPH and distinction in certain parts, leading to the song seeming fairly flat and samey throughout. The Battle Theme is a good example of this, I think.

I couldn't really get into FFX back in the day. I guess it was mostly the questionable voice acting and linear story, but I was thinking about checking out the HD version... until I realized they're fudging up the music and visuals. I'd rather just play the original game on an emulator.
I guess we should've expected all of this since Square-Enix outsourced the project to an external studio.

I only just watched the short video in the opening post, but I really understand what people meant when they said the update removed most (if not all) of the subtle facial gestures that helped to convey the emotion in the cutscenes. I much rather the old version (on the left) compared to the new one.
I'm not too picky when it comes to Videogams, music, etc. but Final Fantasy's image has been falling steadily in my mind ever since XIII-2. I enjoyed the original for what it was, but in making two sequels I think they just took it a LITTLE too far.

Yeah, all in all, this makes me utterly sad.
That's my favorite entry in the series,
At least I'm getting the artbook ;w;

Aren't most remasters outsourced?
Well, shit. Is anyone else finding it crazy that we're actually re-mastering games that already objectively look pretty damn good?
The fact that there isn't much of an actual improvement says it all - then again, maybe it's just the fault of the remastering studio...

Nice work Squaresoft. There's a couple of million yen there not going to make back. Maybe it might have been a better idea to spend that money on making a remake of a game that could have really used it. Like, oh I don't know VII. You know the one game fans have desperately wanting a remake for at least a decade.
Yezh, I think I'll give this one a pass. To be fair I don't have anything against X. But I'd have more fun watching the Spoony Reviews for X and X-2 than playing them.
Besides I already have X on my PS2. With a save file where I have every characters best weapons (dodging all those lightning bolts was a damn pain in the ass) and I'm kicking the crap out of the Dark Aeons. And it still looks better! I'd rather just keep that.
