Unreal Engine 4 is available today for $19/month and a 5% royalty on commercial works.

CryEngine will be available in May for $10/month and no royalty on commercial works.
Looks like UE4 already has tons of extremely high-quality starter assets, more than enough to make complete games with.

Epic announcements of unreal proportions that'll likely result in cries of joy.
Yeah I was wondering what was cheaper about it when it's a monthly payment. The total price isn't stated either?
author=ankyloYou keep paying to receive updates. You can just pay $19 once and still have that version for good. That's how UE4 works. Specifics haven't been given for CryEngine yet.
Pretty sure $19 / $10 a month is way more expensive than $70 for forever....
EDIT: UE4 also includes full source code for the engine. Dear God in heaven.

Wouldn't you want those updates, though? The total is still much higher in that regard.

This was the most remarkable and surprising part to me.

Ahh, I guess I didn't read far enough down. That is pretty crazy that you get the engine and the source for only $19.
Ah, but do you get fully licensed, royalty-free resources with the engines? That's at least half the cost of Ace right there, so...
UE4 comes with a bunch of assets and apparently an integrated marketplace where you can purchase royalty-free assets (or get free ones).
Of course I have no idea what these assets are or if they're any good.

A lot of pro software has started to move over to a per month basis. Adobe comes to mind. With the Adobe shit it makes sense to pay $20 per month when they come out with new software every year. Why keep buying a copy and an upgrade for $500+ when you only need to pay $240 per year?

Yes. You get a lot more than you do with RM, and it's of extremely high quality. You get some complete game starter kits, too.
author=SaileriusStarter kits? That's cool, and now has my interest. I wouldn't even know where to begin to make assets, though. I haven't a clue on how to use Maya or 3ds max or whatever it is kids use these days... And I haven't even taken the time to figure out 2D engines like gamemaker yet or Unity's 2D/3D stuff. Leaping to Unreal would be.... unrealistic... for me.author=LibertyYes. You get a lot more than you do with RM, and it's of extremely high quality. You get some complete game starter kits, too.

Huh. So I can sell a game with them and not have to pay a cent more? Sounds pretty neat. Of course, I'm butts at programming of any type so I'll stick to my RM but it sounds like anyone wanting to delve a bit deeper should definitely take a closer look at them.

CryEngine and Unreal are actually easier to use for non-programmers than RPG Maker is. UE's Blueprints system is like RM events on crack.
The CryEngine 3 SDK and the Unreal 3 UDK are both still free to use. These plans for Crytek and Unreal both offer upgraded engines but one thing you have to look at is are they right tool for what you're trying to accomplish?
Yes, you can make more than just generic FPS games with them but they aren't exactly conducive to making 2D pixelated JRPGs, especially if you've never worked with them before, whereas RPG Maker is made specifically for that purpose and you can start making your own game out of the box after reading a simple tutorial or two.
Personally, I would recommend trying out the Unreal 3 UDK for anyone interested in getting into Unreal development.

I'm... Definitely going to have to check this out when I get a computer again. Always wanted to check out Unreal Engine & Cryteks cry engine for myself, now I just gotta read up on some programming languages. I barely know Python and that's supposedly an easy one :\
