I prefer the SNES when it comes to what I myself have enjoyed, but my brother and I had a lot of fun with multiplayer games on the Sega Genesis Collection for the PS3. I think Sega lost a lot of potential buyers and players because their flagship character was limited to a speed-run themed game and some awful spin-offs, while Nintendo had a certain few gems called Mario Kart and Super Mario RPG, and the rest of Mario's spinoffs (outside of the CD-i) were pretty good and functioned as something besides a virtual pinball machine.
On a sidenote, Final Fantasy (all) and Chrono Trigger (and several other JRPGs) were actually never released in Europe for SNES. We did have Secret of Mana and Secret of Evermore, though.
That must have sucked back then. Today it's so easy to get a game from a different region. I have on a couple of occasions ordered games because I live in Taiwan.
(Fall Out 3 for XBOX 360 due to region lock.)
(Tales of Graces F for PS 3 for English speaking version.)
I still need to play Secret of Evermore. I have it for my Wii on a disk somewhere. But I also need to finish a lot of other games including: Skies of Arcadia, Okami, Majora's Mask, and Windwaker. (Wow I didn't really use my Wii!)
This would be a good topic for another thread: Games you own, but never get around to playing (I know there's more saved onto my ps3 too.)
We’re still having this debate? As far I know, Sega doesn’t make consoles anymore and Sonic the Hedgehog is now Mario’s b**ch and doing him favors - like appearing in Super Smash Bros. again. :D
Anyways, the great thing is I had a neighbourhood friend who owned a Genesis back then that would let me come over to his house and play it while he got to come over to my house and play my SNES. It was awesome back then! I got to play games that I wished were secretly ported over to the SNES, like Streets Of Rage, Road Rash, Phantasy Star, Golden Axe and freakin’ Shining Force 1 and 2 – the only strategy based RPG series that I actually like! I also got to play a ton of cool sports games (that I actually was pretty good at), and even Mortal Kombat with all the blood, gore and violence intact! You know, thinking about it, the Genesis was pretty cool...
Of course, growing up with mostly Nintendo, I have to go with my main boys on this one. Despite enjoying some of the Genesis lineup, there’s no way I can live without A Link To The Past, Super Mario World, Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, Megaman X, Super Metroid, Star Fox, Donkey Kong Country and the works. There’s just no way.
I guess it just depends on what you grew up and what your personal senses of taste were. For me, I enjoyed both systems and both their lovable mascots, but the SNES still remains supreme in my household, now and forever.

For me it's going to have to be Genesis, or Mega Drive as it was called here.
The Genesis games were better made if a game was released on both.
I'm probably biased because Flink, the most beautiful sprite-game ever made, was on Genesis, though.

Yeah, today's Sega is pretty horrible actually. For me especially because they seem to refuse to release certain really good games in English lately and completely ignore all fans that ask for western releases.
They didn't even bring Phantasy Star Online 2 here. FANS had to release an English translation patch.

Having owned both systems, I must say that the Sega: Genesis was superior in every way. Super Nintendo may have had the more numerous and better RPGs, but that was the software company's ability to work with the materials available. Genesis was perfectly capable of handling all of Squaresoft's work, and had it ever been allowed to, would have done it better. Every single time there was a game out for both Genesis and SNES, the Genesis version was always better. Earthworm Jim, Aladdin (I still play this! I have it on ROM, now. For a game only intended to milk a franchise, the developers made a damned good product. Plays just as good on SNES, but the graphics aren't as good.), The Lion King (this was REALLY bad on SNES when compared with Genesis, Simba was distinctly more heavily pixelated, versus the clear definition of the Genesis and the control was like you were trying to drag Simba through mud.), Mortal Kombat, Jurassic Park (For all the work SNES put into this port, they may as well have just put it on the old NES. Genesis version is only one worth your time.), Toejam & Earl, Tazmania, Star Trek: The Next Generation (The difference is night and day between these two versions. The SNES sound is barely recognizable as Star Trek, whereas on the Genesis, you immediately know what you're hearing)...honestly, it's like all of the originals were on Genesis and SNES was bad bootleg.
Now, my favorite games tend to be Super Nintendo, but let me point out that the only games I play on SNES are games that I can't find on Genesis, and that makes the decision for me.
Man, I pretty much feel the opposite. Most Genesis ports I've tried felt vastly inferior with weird colours and strange sound. To each their own, though! It seems like which one we all prefer largely depends on which console we had growing up.
Man, didn't realize we had so many of those weird kids that had Genesis and smelled funny so I avoided them as a child here.
I can't say I have a horse in this race since I owned neither a Mega Drive nor a Super Nintendo. Though I've never even played a Mega Drive (I think I've played on a Sega console once or twice in my life. There was some weird guy I visited who had a Master System).
But I've been a Nintedo guy all the way through. HOWEVER I do enjoy the current sega offerings (Football Manager and Total War)
Why am I posting then. I read this: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1532433459/service-games-the-rise-and-fall-of-sega-enhanced and found it an incredibly interesting story about... Sega.

I've always preferred the Sega Genesis so much more than the SNES. Now, I have to concede that the Sega Genesis was blown out of the water by the SNES in terms of specs, back when that actually meant something. The graphical capabilities of the SNES far exceeded the Genesis, although clever Genesis developers were able to replicate every pretty effect the SNES could do (see games such as The Adventures of Batman and Robin, Vectorman, and Vitura Racing). The sound chip on the SNES was also considerably better, but the Genesis has such a charm to it that I can't help but classify Genesis music as my favorite form of chiptune (Phantasy Star IV, Eliminate Down, Streets of Rage, and a bunch of other things). That just leaves the famous "blast processing", which in reality was just a marketing term for the Genesis's processor that was twice as fast as the SNES. While this often didn't mean much, the Genesis was in fact capable of certain things the SNES was not.
Couple onto it all the wonderful and amazing games on the console, and it stands as my personal choice for the 16-bit era (even though the console is dry on the RPG front, titles such as the Phantasy Star series remedy that). I can see why people would like the SNES, and they're both amazing consoles, but the Genesis does just a little more for me.

Blast Processing is actually a marketing term for DMA (Direct Memory Access) which allows for read and write operations to and from memory using dedicated hardware and not using the CPU which was slower at that particular task. Both the Genesis and the SNES were capable of doing this but I can't say much on the particulars of each implementation. This has a quick writeup on Genesis 'blast processing' and this has some technical details on the SNES DMA.
I played a limited number of games on the Sega-genesis/Dreamcast consoles.
The graphics were pretty advanced for it's time. (1998-2002)

I liked Sega Dreamcast console better than all the sony playstations combined.
These were my favorite games:
Sonic Adventure 1,2
EGG (J-RPG)
Evolution 1,2
House of the Dead 1,2
Power stone
Crazy Taxi 1,2

I think SNES had more good games; but like the Dreamcast over the GameCube, I preferred the good games Sega had to offer more so.
Also, the Sega vibe was just so damn COOL when I was a kid. The marketing was amazing, even if retrospectively stupid. When I was a kid, it was the frickin' SHIT. Going to my friends house in the neighborhood, we'd sit for hours playing Mortal Kombat and Rad Racer. Ecco the Dolphin, Earthworm Jim, of course Sanic, and motherfracking Vectorman!!
Sega Genesis was just plain cool, back in the day. I still have mine in working order and pop in a cart once and a while. Just love that thing.

@Davenport: Why is Fire Emblem on that list? I just Googled "Fire Emblem Dreamcast" and came up with jack crap.
Super Nintendo. Super Mario World was made for it, and it's possibly the best game ever made. You can't play Super Mario World on a Genesis.

You can't even play Super Mario Bros. 1 on the genesis... Apparently
