FINAL FANTASY III "REMAKE" COMING TO STEAM (WITH CARDS!)

I learned from the Humble Bundle that Final Fantasy III (Original NES III, not screwed up North American numbering III) is coming to Steam. It's more or less a port of the PSP version, which was a port of the iOS version with enhanced graphics , audio, and quick-battle, which was a port of the DS version with enhanced graphics, which was an actual remake... But this time, it has Steam Trading Cards and Steam Achievements. If you haven't yet played the original Final Fantasy III or one of its many remakes, this may be the most enhanced enhancement yet, and could be something for you to look into. I think I'd have preferred a Final Fantasy VI port/remake, rather than the original FF3. The DS version of III was all the remake we needed, IMO. And you know, you just can't compete with this:

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

FF3 is pretty much like FF5, except with all of the gameplay removed, and only two or three cut scenes in the whole rest of the game once you reach the second town.
But it has "Final Fantasy" in the name, so it's got that going for it, and will probably sell a quarter million copies.
(It does at least have the NES magic system this time, which is way more interesting than MP. I was pretty annoyed that some of the remakes of FF1 and FF3 changed the games to use one giant MP pool instead of tiered MP per spell level. Was the original NES gameplay not simple enough or something?)

Eh?? I don't recall FF3 ever having MP for spells ever. I know FF1 did that in the GBA on up versions. FF3 has always had a tiered MP spell level thing going for it.
I got so excited by the title. I thought that FF3 was getting a card game like Triple Triad or something. Now I see that is not the case and I am sad. :(
Interesting for its time, FF3 laid the groundwork for Final Fantasy 5 and that's about it. There's no plot to speak of. Even the remake is pretty hard to play, due to its marathon dungeons and inability to save anywhere except the world map.
Yeah, I've tried to play FF3 several times but always end up stopping after a few hours. I just feels like such a repetitive game, it lacks the pace of the first two games and, well, every one that followed it.
FF3DS is the unequivocally worst FF game, even compared to the original FF3. What's one great way to fuck up an already bland job system? Penalize the player for changing jobs! The narrative is still largely nonexistent and bland as fuck, the characters are flatter than doormats, battles are boring, jobs don't give any interesting abilities, and the RNG plays a huge role in battles. The only good things I can say about it is the different characters means everybody at least looks different and the reveal when you leave the floating island is neat. Shame about the other 99.9% of the game.
There's no reason to play this game because FF5 obsoletes it in every way possible. FF5 is varied, more modern, funner, and the GBA localization gives it piles of charm. Grab a GBA emulator and ROM and play that instead and leave FF3DS to rot.

This interface is garbage. I know it's at least the mobile version's interface and I wouldn't be surprised if this is just c/p'd to the pc version.

There's no reason to play this game because FF5 obsoletes it in every way possible. FF5 is varied, more modern, funner, and the GBA localization gives it piles of charm. Grab a GBA emulator and ROM and play that instead and leave FF3DS to rot.

What's more, is that with NES you expect crippling gameplay elements, like no save points in the dungeons, high encounter rates, and a crude job system (although in fairness to the NES it was pretty innovative at the time).
With the DS version, I expected they would fix the flaws. Instead, they left them in, and that made an otherwise classic retro game feel more tedious now than it did back then.
On top of the game being the most difficult in the franchise, the lack of save points in very long dungeons is a cruel joke in an age when time is of essence. I kid you not when I say the last dungeon of the game will take you somewhere between 2 and 3 hours to get through, and that's if you run from half of the fights there. It's probably much longer if you explore it completely and fight everything. It's actually 2 dungeons together, but there are no save points anywhere in either of the dungeons, or between the two dungeons. I believe there is a quick save feature (at least on DS), but if you die at any point in this dungeon, you potentially lose 3+ hours of grindng and exploring.
Not to mention, the boss fights are tough, and the final boss was no exception. Which is typically fine, since I like a good challenge, and it should be expected to die a few times before figuring out the pattern of a boss. But when it takes you this long to finish a dungeon and get to the boss, only to have one shot at figuring it out or losing everything you've done over the past few hours, it's insanely frustrating.
Now they want to put this on Steam, and I applaud them for bring more games to Steam, but I fear this will be the death toll for Final Fantasy games on Steam. Most new gen gamers don't care for heavy grind, high encounter rates, and no save points. As one of the most difficult games in the franchise, I honestly think they should have put some other titles up first.

The NES version was actually easier. Far easier. When they ported it to DS, they reduced the maximum number of enemies per battle to 3, with one exception, when it used to be about 6 or 8 on the NES. They adjusted the enemy strength to match the reduced number, and also adjusted boss strength for some coke-fueled reason, but they didn't accurately alter the EXP rate. So you end up with a grind-fest where the easiest way to win is to kill half of your characters, and then grind to gain decent experience. Also, the final dungeon was 3 dungeons if you count the optional one that had legendary weapons and optional bosses, which were pretty much required to deal enough damage to the final boss. Note that only one of these dungeons had a healing spot, and none had save points.
Also, there was a limited amount of phoenix down unless you got some from enemy drops, so if you used it all up before getting the Raise spell and weren't near a revive pool, you were pretty much screwed. I've played the NES, DS, and iOS versions, and I can honestly say the NES one is significantly better. If they were to remake it in the style of 1, 2, and 5, all of which were re-done in 2D on iOS recently (although 5 had some mapping issues), then they would have a decent Final Fantasy remake experience.
Don't forget the Maze of the Ancients! You had to go through it to reach the Crystal Tower and there's nothing between the two besides twenty square feet of world map that you can save+rest on. Takes fucking forever to go through the whole place even when you run from everything (run from everything, everything drops shit) and fighting Xande four times is even more boring than the game is usually.
I've played and beaten both the NES and DS versions, and even I have to agree NES version was way easier (sod bosses attacking 2-3 times in the same turn! And sod you Garuda!). Both versions are still really boring though I think...I definitely didn't enjoy LPing the NES one at all. Had more fun LPing FFII than that, and I didn't even like FFII either! >_>;;
Right, been forever since I've even looked at the NES version, but now that I think about it I don't recall it being so unforgiving as the DS version. The DS one was unforgettable, and I forgot all but the major annoyances. I can't even remember if I attempted the legendary weapons, although I probably did.
My fear is that new gamers will find it sucks and criticize it horribly on Steam, and believe it represents most if not all the Final Fantasy games prior to VII; or sales is so bad that SE decides not to try and port any of their other previous titles to PC.
Edit: FFII would have better had the level up feature been a bit more fleshed out. I like being able to level up stats versus levels, but it was not always easy to figure out what to do to increase a particular stat. That said, for it's time, the story for FFII (NES) was pretty epic, especially since the first game didn't have much story at all.

I didn't even bother with the Mognet sidequest (because needed to send letters and junk) nor grinding to level 99 for any of the jobs. Just wasn't worth it at all in the end. And by the time you do that, none of the bosses should be any challenge to you save for one, which isn't even worth fighting so to speak.

I'd doubt this would affect any PC port plans. FF7+8 were only put on steam because Square dabbled in PC ports back when the original games were released on PS1: I first played FF7 on my old pentium 1 120Mhz computer at quarter speed or so (until the game would consistently crash during the norther crater cutscene). There wasn't any serious amount of work put into those ports. FF3DS has been ported around to even the Ouya so I'm guessing this is more of a cheap cash grab than any sort of testing the waters. SE learned that there's still a market for their stuff even on the PC when they had to stop selling FF14 when ARR hit and their servers couldn't handle the strain.
i remember my baby sitter would lend me the 1st disc of FF7 PC and i went nuts only to realize i would need her to finish disc 2 for me to borrow it again and all these other complications to beat the game.

I thought FF3DS was just fine, but I understand I'm definitely in the minority on this opinion. I think many people just don't like FF3 in general, and that's OK too. Many people played FF5 before 3, and expected the job system to be the same thing. FF3 was a lot more primitive though, and had more of an FF1 mindset when going about the new jobs... that is, the new jobs you get throughout the game are inherently better than the old jobs, and you're expected to 'upgrade' your party accordingly, whereas in FF5, every job is viable through to the endgame.
In any case, it's definitely not the best final fantasy, and it's kind of weird they insist on remaking it yet again. Fans mostly want a remake of FF6 or 7, but maybe it's best they don't; that screenshot of the new FF3 looks fucking awful. Yeesh.

Anybody care to take bets how many people complain when they realize this is not a remake of FFVI?
I'm thinking 30%-50% of Steam reviews will be "Not Recommended" based on that one reason, and the uninformed users will be threatening with imaginary lawsuits of false advertising.

The DS remake was just done incorrectly, and they refuse to fix it each time they port/remake the remake. The visuals aren't great but those aren't the problem; it's the altered enemy numbers and stats, as well as the altered EXP rates. And the screenshots are supposedly from the PC version, but look worse than the iOS version. I don't know how that's even possible.
