After an epic battle between the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo I thought we should up the ante to one of the more recent console battles. I'm sure more people have something to say about this war.

An interesting video that has nothing to do with which console is better :)

PS2 for me. Because it has such great games, aaand because is the only
one of the three consoles that I have...
PS2! PS2!

Why?
BECAUSE IS INDESTRUCTIBLE!!!
Don't tell that to my PS2 slim -- it gives me read errors if I don't weigh down the disc tray cover with some books or whatever (as does my GameCube and Dreamcast). My "Fat" PS2 still works like new, though.

As far as tech-specs go, I believe the 'Cube had the most horsepower, but severely limited disc-space compared to the XBOX and PS2. The PS2 had the worst specs -- just about any multi-platform game was better on XBOX or GameBOXCube, barring the occasional bonus content that might've been cut or added in the PS2's favor.

Its definitely hard for me to choose between GC and PS2 (I never had an XBOX). I mean, the PS2 definitely has a much more substantial library of games, especially if you count the PS1 games it can also play. Though, if you're going to do that, then I guess you'd have to include all the games you can play with the GameBoy Player for the GC?

Either way, the GC is what I had games for when I was younger. Lately I've gotten a lot more PS2 (and some PS1) games off the used market, so it definitely gets more use now. Meanwhile, the Wii has basically supplanted the GC for everything except GameBoy Player, which thankfully doesn't need to spin the boot disc the whole time or else I'd be fucked.

Overall, I'd say the PS2 is the overall winner, since the GC has barely any games (just like N64 vs PS1), but I have a lot more nostalgia for ol' lunchbox. The XBOX defintely has its advantages, though, with a number of good exclusives and a big modding community. I'm not sure how durable the hardware is, though. I probably should've just voted PS2 instead of Welp!, but oh well...

Edit: Oh, controllers! Yeah, the GC controller is one of my favorites... for the games its designed around. For most other games, I'd rather the other two, namely the PS2 with its D-Pad and clickable "triggers" for 2D games. For 3D games that only need one analogue stick, I love the GC, but its right stick nipple is near-worthless for the kinds of things you'd normally need it for on other systems.
The radial buttons are interesting, too. For some games, like SoulCalibur 2, they're amazing and I almost can't stand playing SC3 on the PS2 or SC4/5 on the 360 because of it. For others, like the Megaman and X Collections, they're so bad that I went out of my way to repurchase those two games for the PS2 just to have a proper button layout.

Also, one last thing in the GC's favor -- four controller slots without need of a multi-tap peripheral.

And I guess the GBA connectivity was kind of interesting, though certainly difficult to fully utilize.

MOAR EDIT: In terms of longevity, the PS2 definitely wins, though. Even as recent as 2012 there's been games officially released for it, and there's probably been some more I'm not aware of since then.
PS2 had an amazing amount of great games. That era is when Sony really hit its stride in the game quality and became a viable contender with the rest of the companies out there.

Besides, it played really well, had backward compatibility and I've never heard of one breaking that wasn't human error (that is, someone opening it up to check out the innards or water damage. I know some stupid people.)

Also, I may actually be one of the few people who prefer the PS controllers to other ones. I really like them a lot better.
Xbox was the only one of these I owned, so I voted for it. Plus it had KOTOR and KOTOR 2, the greatest games of that generation. Also, the Xbox's controller S was the best one of the bunch. The PS2 controller was aight, but the GameCube one was downright HORRID.

I only ever owned a PS2, though I wanted a Dreamcast, an XBox, and a Gamecube. In the past, I had always owned all systems. It just wasn't possible by the time I was in my late teens, but even today, I find that I can only own one at a time, which I find odd, because even back in the day I could always pick up a used system (This desire of mine, of course, goes back to the early 80s, when you could pick up an Atari or an Intellivision at a yard sale for 30 bucks. Nintendo, Sega Master system, even Genesis and Super Nintendo, I had them all.). Being that my only experience is with PS2, I can't really say anything about the other systems.

I do know that the XBox controllers are far superior (having a modded one that fits my PC USB). If you don't know the joys of an XBox controller, the PS controller is nothing, NOTHING compared to it. XBox controllers, firstly, are like bricks. You could run over it with a tank and it would still work. PS controllers often can't handle being swatted by the cat. Second, button placement and shape fit the hand much more intuitively than the PS controller. Not that the PS controller isn't intuitive and easily used: it is. It's just that the XBox controller is moreso.
PS2 has lots and lots of good games, but the Gamecube still had the greatest games. Baten Kaitos for example.

XBox is the only console I didn't get because it didn't even have a single exclusive title that interested me (I have an XBox360 though - worth alone for Infinite Undiscovery).
I voted game-cube and N64 as the best consoles because their limited games were manufactured well. The 3-D graphics had good quality which made up for lower resolution games. Ironically Sony Play-station 2 ranked as the most successful console on the videogame market with over 150 million units sold as of February 2011. By comparison the Sega Dreamcast was discontinued in 2001 but became popular as well with 10.6 million sold.

I'm definitely biased in regards to this since I've owned a Gamecube and nothing else during that era, so I voted for that. I think the PS2, however, owes its success to having a great, diverse library of games, despite technically being the worst of out of the three systems. There were only a few games I've seen from that system that ran on a smooth frame rate. Part of the the reason I still love my Gamecube to this day is because it's as stable as... a cube!
PS2, since it's the only console I've ever owned. Now it's just gathering dust. ;_;
I chose to buy PS2 because it had my favorite series. It died after two years coz lazy me never cleaned its insides.
So then I bought a Slim and kept it covered with a cloth at all times. It's been almost 10 years now and it still looks brand new and works perfectly fine.

PS2 just had such an extensive library of games, its ridiculous to even think about. The RPGs out there in this era was so large that I couldn't even begin to list them all. The cube and the box just didn't have so many rpgs.

Ohh, and besides KOTOR, XBOX had The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind (Which is still my favourite Elder Scrolls game to date.)

I didn't own any of these.

Welp!

edit: Ew! Xbox controller was good? It was so unwieldy! I could barely fit my hands around the original controller to start with. I mean look at this thing!

Yes, look at it! Large and designed with an eye for button and thumb position, more comfortable to hold. You can actually close your palms around the sides and doing so facilitates easy access to buttons and sticks. The left stick switches position with the d-pad so it's not a chore to reach one or the other (play a Playstation game that needs both the stick and the d-pad. If it's one or the other, you can re-position your hand easily enough, but having to use both is a pain in the ass). The large size of the controller is NOT a detriment. You only think it is because you're used to the small controllers the industry is known for. Don't just hold it. You can't glean any useful information that way. Actually try it and you'll see what I'm talking about. (I was originally put off by its size too, but once I actually played an XBox game, my first thought was about how comfortable the controller was to hold. My only complaint at the time was that I didn't know the button layout, and that's no complaint at all. We never know button layout until we get used to the controller, and that's every controller, small or large. I only wish I could use it with my PS3.)

If were comparing controllers then it would be Xbox > PS2 > Game Cube. Is it me or is the Cube's controller one of the worst things you could put in your hand. Have you tried playing a game that requires 2 analogue sticks with it? One of the main reasons I played Twilight Princess on the Wii was because I couldn't stand the crap that was the cube's controller.

On the other hand the Xbox controller is very well designed. This is what made games like Halo so easy to play and become to popular. Moving around Master Chief while changing your perspective is so easy it becomes natural. I can't imagine why I would want to play a shooting game using the Game Cube's shit ass contraption. Even the PS2 controller's trigger buttons aren't naturally placed to be easily hit.
I've owned a Gamecube and a PS2. Never bothered with XBox because I was never too interested in its exclusives. When it came out, I felt like it was trying to mostly appeal to shooter nuts and I've never really been one.

The Gamecube was FANTASTIC for first party titles. I had so much fun with Mario titles that it was absolutely insane. I even grew to enjoy Mario Sunshine even though it was pretty weak as a legit Mario game. That was about all it had going for it though, first party titles. It did have some somewhat creative interesting exclusives though, like Geist.

Sony won it for me. I was very late to the party and got a PS2 only about a year and a half or so before the launch of the next generation. Despite that, I quickly started checking out a lot of games I missed and ended up loving my little slim PS2 way more than I ever did with my Gamecube.

I would have picked PlayStation 1 but it wasn't on the list. It had a huge wealth of games, mascots, awesome memories, and tons of experimental games. The more complicated the system, the less we see of experimental gaming.

This poll was based on a certain generation of gaming.

The Playstation and Nintendo 64 were part of a different era of gaming. I skipped this generation due to the fact that I didn't see a reason to do a poll on Nintendo 64 Vs. PS1.

But the fact that the PS2 is backwards compatible with 95% of PS1 titles gives it access to a huge library. This was back when backwards compatibility was really important to companies to have. The current generation is just sickening with its lack of this feature.

And I hope no one's angry that I didn't even bother to mention the Dreamcast here. Which was pretty dead by the time the PS2 came around.

I never had an issue with PS2 buttons. I found the controller quite easy to use and far preferred it over the other controllers of the era (and since). In fact, I've a USB one for use with computer games~<3

I love my controller~ ^.^
