Haven't figured out a clever trick for paralyze skills yet. I always just make sure the cooldown is longer than the duration, or that they wear off when the target is struck.
I have two ways.
1. The one explained above (always make bosses have minions or multiple body parts so just one part paralyzed isn't making him completely unable to act - it can even be incorporated with the strategy by having a party that can fully heal itself and other parts and the only way to kill it is to paralyze it).
2. If you have a more ATBish battle system you can make it so that "paralyze" fails if the target is already paralyzed and the duration ends exactly between the turns of the paralyze caster, so at first you can't cast paralyze because the target is already paralyzed but shortly after paralysis wears off and the affected unit will get a turn in before it can be paralyzed again.
I think I am going to incorporate skill warmups and cooldowns, sounds like an awesome idea! But with those I wonder if i need a limited magic pool that builds up over time (similar to TP) ... I think maybe I could eliminate that and either have no MP or have a larger pool of MP that doesn't regenerate so the user has a resource to manage while dungeon delving... The tricky part of that is making sure MP isn't too scarce or too trivial... I don't want to have people just spamming auto attack all the time :P (and if you did that in this game you would die).
Perhaps I could not have base regeneration but make your MP regenerate a tiny amount after a regualar attack or defend command.

If you really want to work ALOT with status changes as in making it the core element on your combat, you could actually really add a stat for it that increases during combat and makes it so each character can only cast a status change every X turns. On other turns player can still attack or cast non-status change skills.
