DIFFERENT WAYS OF LEARNING MAGIC/SKILLS

I have a really different Skillsystem in mind:

Every Charakter has 3 different skilltypes that can be leveled independend from each other.
Example: One Charakter is Weappon based and you can choose between 3 Weapon types.
Those weapon types only can be leveled by using one of those Weapons.
Also you can only use the special skills of the Weapon you equipped (so no Lance-Moves when you have equipped a Bow)

So much for my "active" Charakters. But there are "passive" Charakters in my Gameconcept too that have to learn Skills. Those don't have such a wide Skilltree.
They learn their skills a bit faster because they don't need to choose. But to make them use their Skills they need Items to consume and some of the skills need one round to work (because they first need to build stuff or similar)

I hope you kind of get what I plan on my game ^^. But I'm pretty sure that this type of Skill system isn't easy to make on the RPG-Maker...

I've been thinking on this for a little while now, mostly since some people complained about the enemy giving to little exp in my game.

The reason I made it like that is because you learn magic/skills by leveling up. Gaining the latter, powerful skills early on would break the balance, which I did not want.

After playing the original FF, I realized the other way of learning magic by buying it from shops.
The reason I enjoyed this was because I could level up a lot faster without necessarily making the game a cakewalk.
In my game, the estimated end level would normally be around 30, meanwhile in FF, you could easily get level 50+ and even be maxed out to 99 before facing the final boss. If that would be the case in my game, it would of most certain be a cakewalk.

I'm basically wondering what you guys think about this. Do you enjoy the sweet touch of learning your magic by leveling, or do you rather prefer the majestic excellence of buying magic from shops?

From a developers perspective, I believe the second option is easier to implement to your game.

A monolithic approach to spell-learning is... kinda stupid.

Option 3: Have a mixture. Wizards learn spells from shops, starting with maybe one spell. Warriors learn techniques from fighting other warriors. Priests learn by visiting temples. And so on.
Instead of learning new skills/magic by level, it would be more interesting to do it by stats. Say, if you increase your agility past a certain point, you'd gain a new agility-based move. If attunement to fire, then a new fire-magic, etc.
It's still somewhat similar to gaining them by level, as leveling usually increases several stats as well. The difference being that characters would be able to learn a wider range of moves.

I was thinking of a point buy skill system. Wherein one gets skills by perching them with some sort of Skill Point or AP or what have you.

The catch is you only get said AP from defeating boss, or boss like encounters. The theory being that if one is having trouble one could still level grind to make things easier, but to get real power you would have to progress the game (or at least find some bonus bosses to fight or something).

That's also a good idea! You could also get these Skill Points or AP through different quests etc. As you say, a player should be able to grow stronger by leveling, but not completely OP.

Thanks for all of the ideas, guys! I've realized that there are a lot of ways to learn spells. Maybe a good idea would be to give each character a different way of learning spells. It adds more variety in a way. :P
