WHAT EXACTLY IS A DUNGEON?
Posts
I always prefer to call any area within a game that has encounters with enemies an "explorable area" and everything else is either a town or city or outpost or what have you.

Explorablearea = RE? I sure love to explore big cities and other RE free areas in games.
It's just what I personally refer to them as, I'm not saying that everyone should use that term and make it the standard.
ah gees, don't anybody know from GOOGLE??? :)

What is a dungeon?

A dungeon is a room in a castle used for holding prisoners. Hundreds of years ago, when kings and queens were the main rulers of land, there weren't very many police stations or jails. Criminals had to be put somewhere, and many times, in castles, the solution was to have a dungeon.

Sometimes dungeons were very high up in towers. Do you know the story of Rapunzel? She was trapped in a type of dungeon, high off the ground with no escape (except her long hair!) Other dungeons were dark rooms underground where criminals were chained to walls. Sometimes the only way into an underground dungeon was through a small trap door in the ceiling! A dungeon was certainly not a very pleasant place to be.

A dungeon crawl is a type of scenario in fantasy role-playing games in which heroes navigate a labyrinthine environment, battling various monsters, and looting any treasure they may find.

When I began reading this thread I could not understand why some said a dungeon could be on the outside of anywhere :)
I could be wrong, and many times I am, but it seems to me that a dungeon must be inside
It can be a cave inside a mountain or a rooms or rooms in a castle tower.......
BUT IT MUST BE INSIDE :)

LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

I mean, I realize you're mostly joking, but we're talking about the video game term here, not about medieval prisons.
True, but I guess all he's trying to say is that dungeons are and can only be interiors. I don't agree with that completely, but I see how a lot of people could(thinking of temples in Zelda games, etc.).
Ain't no joke Z :) I realize or think I do, that people are talking about killing monsters and finding things to help them get through a section of a game.
Maybe we could come up with a name for a piece of land containing monsters but still outside an enclosure. I know!!! "Sunshine Dungeon" :)
Really, any dungeon I've seen in all the games I've played have been inside of.....something :)
Have you ever seen a game that names a piece of land that is out in the open and contains monsters and chests a "dungeon"?

For me personally, I like to make this distinction:
- An area, be it a cave, forest, desert, tunnel, whatever, where you encounter enemies and chests and such, but serves as a way to go from Point A to Point B is a Passage.
- An area, be it a cave, forest, desert, tunnel, wahtever, where you encounter enemies and chests and such, but has a goal at the end of it, a boss, an item, or something, and then you leave back through the way you came is a Dungeon.
So it's all about the goal: are you trying to travel through this area, or gain something at the end of it.
For example, the Golden Sun games are rife with Passages: caves, forests and such that you travel through to reach new areas. Meanwhile, the Lighthouses that you're trying to reach are Dungeons: you try to reach the summit and then you leave the same way you came in.

I agree with you for the most part on Golden Sun having Lighthouses as main dungeons. I'd still call Lunpa Fortress and the inside of Trent dungeons. They both have clear story goals attached to them.
