CONTROVERSIAL TOPICS IN YOUR GAME

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

I don't want anyone to make a game about fucking donkeys, let's just get that out of the way.

Hmmm...

if it's an actually controversial topic (like, one that could potentially offend people) and not just a tough one (random example: "Do clones count as people?"), I try to handle it relatively delicately, although I haven't really worked much with anything THAT controversial yet.

As for LGBT related stuff in my game, I honestly don't treat it like a big deal. If a character is into it, they're into it.

:P Although I'm not above revealing a character swings the other way through poking fun at another character who had the hots for one of the involved characters, only to find out suddenly "oh. They're not into me at all. Damn".

Well, I didn't take scat off the table.
If it's just there to give some kind of feeling of false depth, no thanks. I kinda look at it the same way I look at gore and blood in games. Only use it if you really need to. And obviously try to keep it classy.

Also too many controversial topics in a single game kinda makes it lose focus. Try to keep it to a minimum, or else people will get desensitized to it and just not care how cruel the evil tyrant is.

--I mean, in some rural areas, donkey fucking is more or less socially acceptable, even if it's hush-hush.

I made the mistake of watching that "interview with a cannibal". Now I'm not sure I want to include such subject matter in my game, even if it is a hallucination.
Man, I watched that one a while back. I found it really sad and interesting. Like, I actually felt sorry for a guy who fucking ATE someone else. Sometimes Vice is pretty awesome--their original trip to North Korea is definitely worth a watch (their newer one is less so).

I mean, he's mentally ill to the nth degree, sure, but how can you feel sorry for him, especially when he got away with everything? What about the woman who he widdled down to the bone in some places and downright butchered in others? She was just a classmate doing work when he came up from behind with a shotgun and ended her... Need I remind you that he raped her corpse before carving her up?

And what about his other victims, or the woman he "befriended" that agreed to have sex with him in some low-grade porno only to find out later that he'd committed these horrible things? You can see her break down in the interview while he's stone-faced and almost proud of himself.

He got everything he ever wanted and got away with it. How can you feel sorry for that?
Because if that's what he wanted, then he's probably got some serious problems mentally?

I don't hesitate for a second to include "controversial" content in my games if it would benefit the game. I just, fucking, do it. One of the few advantages of NOT being a AAA publisher/studio.

Boldtalics for emphasis.
I feel sorry for him because he has some pretty severe mental problems, he's had to continually debase himself in television and film so that he can make enough money to keep his apartment, he's mostly socially isolated, and when he said something along the lines of, "If I lose my apartment, I'll probably commit suicide," he was absolutely sincere. I mean, obviously I think he did a fucking horrible thing and I feel worse for the victim, but even "monsters" are human, and I thought that documentary did a good job of making me see his perspective, and it's a pretty bleak one. He didn't look proud at all about his past; he looked nervous and ashamed but resigned.

This woman is already dead. Whatever you do now. What'd be more important is keeping him from harming another.

And seriously, if he got all he ever wanted, why in the world would he want to die? Why would he be frustrated over the fact that he can't feel remorse for the horrible thing he did? (which already means that technically, he knows it's wrong) - when he's already knows that he's crazy?
If you think that's a nice position to live in, avoided by all, having troubles with yourself and keeping yourself in check while shaming yourself to get some money in.. then I'd be interested to know what you think is "all he ever wanted".

An obsession is not a hobby. Obsessions can spin out of control, if left unattended It's unhealthy, repressing other interests and he already made some real progress by himself, which is quite impressive. Also thanks to the woman who was shocked, but apparantly must've gotten over it. He really talks sincere. It certainly isn't as shocking a topic for him as for others, but since he knows that fully well, it alienates him further and he'll still be bothered by it in different ways.

Tragedies are sad stories on both ends, usually. It was one hell of a wrong crime, certainly. But it doesn't make his life any better.
It's both very sad and interesting .. I'd agree with that, at least.

If you are upset with him being free .. then you should blame some institutions. He'd rather have taking a sentence as some way of "taking responsibility".

Let me break it down for you:

• He had a normal childhood with a full family by his side. His parents didn't pass away until he was well into his adult life.
• He had the financial means to go through school, attend university and travel.
• He got to live out his deepest most perverse fantasy (regardless of how fucked up it was).
• He evaded life in jail for whatever reason.
• He fell in love and had some sort of two-way relationship.
• He gets paid to tell his story and has had others recreate his life in comic-form and other media.
• In his old age, he's found someone who shows compassion on him for all the wrongs he's done in life.
• Never once was there mention of him seeking psychological help for his cannibalistic urges. The only means of coping he's found is masturbation, a practice he's found harder due to impotence (if that isn't a red flag, I don't know what is).

And now you feel for him because he's fallen on hard times well into the twilight years of his life? What about the family and friends that had a light ripped away from them by this man? You say that he feels remorse and that he wants to die, but if he's truly a sociopath, he cannot physically connect the dots between right and wrong and any expression of regret is a learned behavior that he can do nothing more than imitate.

So either he's crazy and doesn't feel a thing, or he's lying and a complete monster whose guilt has finally caught up to him and now he seeks a means to end his own pain.

Please note that this is coming from someone who finds the idea of being swallowed alive and whole (no digestion and not carved up and had chunks of flesh stored in the fridge like chicken) by someone of the opposite sex rather intriguing. If there should be any kindred compassion, it should be from someone like me and I can barely stomach the thought of what this creep did.
i think all of the characters in my game have parents that are still alive. that's pretty taboo for rpgs

shitposting aside: really the best way to approach sensitive topics is to do your homework. if you touch on a topic that's "controversial" (i hate that word augh) and you haven't researched it, it will show and your game will be ruined utterly.

i'm not hyperbolizing. you will literally 100000% ruin your game by lazily invoking racism or rape or mental illness or trying to talk about the trials of having the gay.

even if you have lived experience in a thing, do homework anyway. i am a queer lady and i know i still pack around a lot of internalized misogyny and queerphobia. if i can't write queer characters and women without doing homework and self-reflecting, someone who isn't queer and/or isn't a woman sure as hell won't be able to.

basically research research research. do not trust what you think you know about these things: cross reference stuff and actually LISTEN when you find info you don't like. be academic about it.

like, would you write historical fiction about a village in spain circa 1920 without researching what villages in spain were like in 1920? no, you wouldn't, because it would be inaccurate and awful because of it. treat experiences you haven't had (or haven't seen represented a lot) the same way and you will find success! IT'S DOABLE i've seen dudes write some pretty awesome women in the past, for instance. you just gotta work for it. >w<d
I get your point. I'm in the camp that he's not an actual sociopath, but he's deeply ashamed of his past and what he's become. Sociopaths are good at manipulation, though, so maybe his depression is an act; it felt genuine to me, especially considering his day-to-day life. I think he's worthy of my pity, but it's not like I would want to help him in any way. If I were his neighbor, I'd ostracize him just like everyone else.

Media studies, Padre Padrone, 'nuff said.

I really don't need to see that again, in ANY format. So if you are going include the abuse of donkeys and chickens, actually and/or, actually any animal, please add a disclaimer on the sodding gamepage so I can avoid downloading it in the first place.

I would caution anyone before adding such topics to their game to make really, really, really sure you know what you're doing before you add it.

Because you probably don't.

i am literally bowled over every day by all the shit i don't know. the sooner we all accept our similarities to jon snow (at least insofar as knowing things goes) will be a wonderful frabjous day
Ummm, let's see.

In Oracle of Tao, I have:

1. Anarchy (as a working government)
1b. Politics in general
2. Religion (including editorials on certain current religions)
2b. Cults (Aiken, the Druids, and )
2c. Idolatry (one town has a coercive worship of a suit of armor)
3. Sex (usually black-screen, with moaning)
3b. Pregnancy
3c. Childbirth
3d. Menstruation (I kid you not, it is a battle mechanic)
4. Sexual deviance (Nevras is a crossdresser)
4b. Lesbianism
5. Blackmail (related to photos of the above crossdressing, they can be sold at a profit)
5b. Black market trade (Shady characters sometimes sell stuff at night)
5c. Bounty hunting
5d. Criminal underworld (One town is run by vampires)
6. Intersex characters (The town of Futanari)
6b. Feminine males (Michael is very effeminate looking)
7. Encounters with Lovecraftian monsters
8. Despair and depression
8b. Complete psychological breakdown and insanity
9. Oh, yea, and casual murder (Two occasions, one involving the hero slaughtering the party)

Amazingly, all of this is done somewhat tastefully (no overt clothing missing/nudity to any of the sex stuff, and the other stuff is so low key, you have to look for it)

Oh, yea.

10. Horrific nightmares. Especially including deformed babies.

A man living with a donkey in a small house away from all towns.
