NOCHE (AN RPG IDEA THAT I AM RUNNING THROUGH AND LOOKING FOR FEEDBACK FOR)

OK, I do not have enough visual concept material to necessitate posting them online yet, though if there is enough demand for it, I will post what I have online. In the meantime, I have struck upon a game I wish to develop, or at the very least, ask the opinion of. Basically, the story I have is this:

Once, there lived a handsome prince, who inherited from his father a wonderful kingdom to call his own. But the prince had been raised to be vain and useless, as he spent more time attending to his vices than his learnings. This was widely apparent when he finally took his throne, as he wasted his kingdom's wealth upon himself. When that ran out, he attacked his neighboring kingdoms, only succeeding in wasting away the loyal men he had. Without hesitation, the prince decided instead to steal his wealth from the temple's granaries and treasuries.

Within a month of his transgression, the rains stopped falling, the rivers dried up, and the wells refused to yield. Less than half a year passed, and the only food remaining was that inside others already, save for the prince. When the people begged him for sustenance, he laughed them off, meaning leaving them to survive upon each other. Desperate, the people burned what little they had left to their God's, begging them to force the him to see the errors of his ways. After much thought, the God's obliged, but also decided to add a new element.

From the prince, they took his beauty, leaving him as a horrid beast owned only by his vices, and left alone by all his followers. For the people, they took away death, and brought back those who had died. But the gods were blind to the diferences amongst their subjects, taking away death from the prince and the beauty from his followers as well. One final thing the gods had specified a single condition for both groups to be freed of their curse: if the prince was married to one who loved him before the New Fire Festival, then the curses would be lifted. However, should the prince remain in his arrogant ways alone for the festival, then the curse would remain: the prince and his people would live forever.

The game itself would take place, big shocker, many years later, in the opening days of the New Fire Festival, with the player being the brother (or sister, I think I'll leave that up to the player) of the New Flame, the Girl from which the Holy Fire will spring forth. As another big shocker, the prince's subjects have decided to kidnap her, as they know her beauty will be more than enough to sway the prince to marry her. However, if the New Flame is then the world will spiral into darkness until there is no life left.

Aside from that, I was thinking of having it be more or less standard turn based combat system, with a party of 8 people at the Max. I don't know if it is possible, but I was also thinking of having encounters being done by running into guys on the field instead of at random, like Earthbound or Persona, to give the player the option to avoid combat if they are good enough. It is a little hard to describe here, but i also wanted there to be a more meso-american feeling to it in terms of enemies, characters, and environments. As I think of more, or if there is a general curiosity for it, I will post more details and pictures.

With that being said, please tell me what you think of the idea so far, or if you are interested in helping.

Thank you for reading, and have a nice day.

Interesting idea. The whole thing with the prince turning into a horrid beast and having to marry one that loves him really reminds me of the whole Beauty and the Beast story, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The setting also sounds potentially fresher than the standard generic fantasy RPG fare, which is definitely a good thing.

Any ideas on who these people are in relation to the story?

It certainly is, as I'm doing the same thing in a couple of my games. It just takes some eventing.

I'm willing to help you on an idea level, but as for the actual work, I've got too much on my plate already to add any more projects. ;)

The impression that I'm getting from that story is that the prince doesn't actually regret what he's done. I mean, he's probably not happy to have been turned into a beast, but I'm not sure about this process of reverting him back to his human form. Particularly with the kidnapping of... somebody that... whoever thinks the prince will fall for? That doesn't come across to me as a situation where the prince would change heart. Presuming that's what you want to do. If not, I could see a story involving political factions vying for power, maybe even with the player taking a side.

As for on-screen encounters in the vein of Earthbound and/or the Persona series, I've heard that there's a script that allows events to react to player proximity. I have no idea how the script actually functions, but, I've done on-screen encounters. My general technique is to copy-paste events that are meant to be encounters, and use a a Common Event. This Common Event randomizes which encounter is actually gotten. I'm kinda thinking that, perhaps, some kind of combination of the script and this technique will achieve what you're looking for.
The story has a strong fairy tale feel. It pretty much has to be fairy tale, it doesn't make any sense logically.

Anyway, a script like Marrend described does exist, Yanfly's "Event Chase Player" should fit the bill. The rest is just eventing.

I have some vague ideas as to whom I want the party be. These are the ones I have at least given some thought to:
The player
-either male or female, but they are the relative of the New Flame. Overall, they are a Jack of all trades, and is going out mainly to save their sister.
The chef
-a female chef from the royal court, who has become the New Flame's friend for her ability to work with chocolates. Is coming with as she has a knowledge of herbs and can use her knowledge of fire and cold in battle.
The scribe
-one of the many temple scribes, who was kicked out for showing a book of their kings "exploits" to his students when he was drunk. Is coming with to regain his old position, and can bring the characters from his books to life.
The Illusionist
-part charlatan, part priestess, her knowledge of incenses and drugs are second to none. She is coming with for the money that it will bring to her, and can poison and screen her enemies.
The knight
-one of the prince's warriors who was killed in a duel with the prince and left for his peasants to take care of. Is coming along so that he can convince the prince to marry, and allow himself to final die.
???
-I know exactly who this is, but they will be a secret character that is optional.
The other two I am having a hard time thinking of these next two, so what help I can get is needed.

@marrend
OK, you caught me:
Yeah, the prince is actually happy for how this is going on. In fact, he loves the fact that he is immortal, and is reveling in all of the time he has for his vices now. Even the peasants are initially happy over their sudden immortality, and so they go on to kill all the newborns in the kingdom where the New Flame was supposed to come from. However, as time went on, they realized that while they were immortal, they could still suffer from the world, despite how deep their wounds were or how gnawing their hunger became.

Desperate, they turned to theirs gods once more, but were shut out for having nothing to offer them. Cut out, they returned to beg their prince to marry which, after much thought, he declared he would only marry one who is as beautiful as the sun itself. After several years of searching they came up empty handed, and the people were desperate for anyone they could marry. Instantly, the prince named the New Flame, immediately knowing they would never risk destroying the world to allow themselves to die.

@crystalgate
I guess that is a good thing.

@all
That's a good thing to know for the scripting.

Wait a sec...

If everybody was immortal, how would they go about killing the newborns? Would they not be immortal as well? Though, maybe you could set it up so that the newborns not dying would be a hint to their immortality?

Only in the kingdom the prince ruled. The neighboring kingdoms are all mortal and didn't suffer through the famine. Though, if it helps:

The New Flame is a child born with an ash like mark upon their back exactly 16 years before the New Fire Ceremony. The mark must be validated by a priest within seven days of their birth, or else the New Fire ceremony will not happen (it alternates between every 52 years and 78 years to account for this). Afterwards, the family is brought up to the status of a noble, regardless of their previous position. This also allows them to account for the random plague or war which might kill their people.

I can accept that children outside that one kingdom/nation wouldn't be affected. The ones inside of it, though, those children would, presumably, be immortal.

Which is what I was trying to get at with my previous post. Sorry for not making it more clear!

That is true.
But there is only ever one New Flame at a time. And, seeing as the New Flame has a built in lifespan, choosing an immortal to be the New Flame would go against the whole point.

I have some sketches done too, I just have to figure out how to get them online.
Well, I managed to make some sketches for the characters, so I hope that these can at least show what I'm trying to do. I have them divided into:
Characters:

scenery:

Ok, lets try this again:

@unity
-Thanks for that info. Did you enjoy the pictures?
Ok, some more on the characters, and I'm trying to figure out which ones I should keep.
The peasant name not fixed, but temped name is cacticac
-either male or female, but they are the relative of the New Flame. Overall, they are a Jack of all trades, and is going out mainly to save their sister. Abilities are based on reciprocating damage and countering.
The chef Papan Zin
-a female chef from the royal court, who has become the New Flame's friend for her ability to work with chocolates. Is coming with as she has a knowledge of herbs and can use her knowledge of fire and cold in battle. Abilities are based on fire and cold, though she can engage in close combat.
The scribe Papantzin
-one of the many temple scribes, who was kicked out for showing a book of their kings "exploits" to his students when he was drunk. Is coming with to regain his old position, and can bring the characters from his books to life. He is a full blown glass cannon, incapable of taking damage, but more than capable of taking out most things quickly.
The Illusionist Suarez *(not sure of)
-part charlatan, part priestess, her knowledge of incenses and drugs are second to none. She is coming with for the money that it will bring to her, and can poison and screen her enemies. Based on damaging the enemies over time, weakening them, and strengthening her allies.
The knight Ah Puch
-one of the prince's warriors who was killed in a duel with the prince and left for his peasants to take care of. Is coming along so that he can convince the prince to marry, and allow himself to final die. He can take and deal large amounts of damage, intercept damage for the other fighters, and even has a regenerative ability owing to his status.
The Hunter Mix Coalt *(not sure of)
-The silent type, in the service of one of the nearby princes and is given to them in recognition of their help. Not exactly all that helpful
The Herder Kon *(not sure of)
-A man cursed by the gods after he escaped from the underworld. He managed to bring with him a horn that summons any animal he so desires, but he's too cowardly to use it. Is more than capable of helping his allies or attacking, but he is also very squishy.
The acrobat Trachten Buch *(not sure of)
-A female log juggler (yes, that is a real profession they had) who has run away from a lesser noble. Focusing on doing rapid attacks that build up on top of each other to deal higher damage. Also good at dodging attacks or countering them back onto the attacker.
??? Zarma
-I know exactly who this is, but they will be a secret character that is optional.

Aside from that, here are some thoughts I was working through:
Stats:
Power (additional damage added to basic attacks)
Resilience (the characters ability to resist damage)
Agility (the characters ability to help land attacks, dodge, and fill the combat meter)
Wisdom (additional damage added to special abilities)
Armour (a percent chance at ignoring damage, based on the equipment the character has)
Health Points (amount of damage they can take. At 0, they die.)
Ability Points (depleted each time they use an ability)
Combat:
Meter based,as it fills up according to the character's Agility. When full, they can do one of these things:
Basic attack
-The character uses an attack that is based on a combination of their power and weapon.
Special attack
-Uses an ability, the stronger attacks use more AP, but also consume more of the meter, even occasionally locking it up for a turn on the strongest ones.
Use Item
-...self explanatory, though it only uses half the meter
Dodge
-temporarily increases speed, and only uses half of the meter. By doing this, it increases their accuracy, chance to dodge, and the rate the meter fills, for the next two times, but consumes ability points to do so.
Guard
-temporarily increases resilience and defense for the next couple of turns. Uses up all of the meter and a large chunk of Ability points.
retreat
-A chance at escaping combat, which is actually not necessarily a bad thing to do. Leaving combat gives the player time to stop, heal their characters, and do other such things. The damage stays on the enemies, but, given how the over-world works, if they get touched within ten seconds of escaping, then they will be ambushed and have their meters locked up until they are either attacked (which deals extra damage in ambushes) or three turns pass.

Is there anything glaringly bad about what I have said so far? Aside from that, I have the story, I just have to figure out how to organize it...so...this...this is going to be a bit unorganized.
Prologue
-meet the New Flame
-organizing friends (and Papan Zin) into a team, so allows the player to figure out how to organize their party, equip items, etc.
-enter the flower war, allows the player to experiment with combat and learn some of the basics
-attack by the soldiers of the Prince, teaches the player how to retreat, as they can pretty much one shot kill their friends.
-watch the regular warriors die as they try to rescue the New Flame (Itzpa), unveils they are undead
-(Papantzin) joins the group after convincing the player he wants to join
-learns that, in order to gain undue the immortality of the Prince (or at the very least, his subjects), they have to go in person and convince the patron gods of those princedoms (stuck between using the aztec four directions{especially since it fits in incredibly well) or the 5 elements) that they have to undue their curse.
Chapter
-wanted there to be be about 8-12 of them, with their being some of them (or as a transition) staring the New Flame (Itzpa) in her captivity trying to figure out how to escape.
-the gods
--one requires the player to duel with them
--one requires the player to bring an artifact back from an abandoned temple
--one requires the player to solve their riddles (answers found by talking to other people)
--one requires the player to kill the territories prince, as they are not honoring them
-aside from that
--find ??? (Zarma), help ??? (Zarma)

Yeah, I realize that now. Aside from that, do you have any other comments or questions?
You should put those images under a hide tag, they're really damn big.

Aside from that, what exactly do you want help with? I'd be willing to do graphical stuff (by that I mean facesets, monster design, that sort of thing, but not tiles or sprites) or writing, stuff like that.

Give some more details, there are a lot of aspects of game design so you should be more specific about the ones you're able to do, and what you need help with.

I could use feedback on the story, and some help designing the enemies, but I guess the main thing would be if someone who knew how to program could help with that. I have half an idea how to do music and spriting, and it would probably be best to see what is technically possible before going to far with anything else.
I can't be of help with the programming, I'm sorry to say.

The offer still stands though to help out with face graphics for the party, converting your enemy drawings into coloured designs, the title image, that sort of thing (so I guess secondary aesthetics - not stuff as important as the maps, tiles, sprites).

some things:
- why the similarity between the names Papan Zin & Papantzin?
- have you got a rough idea of the entire story, not just the prologue/events before the start of the game?
- what engine is this in?

Now that I think of it, I can't really help out with the writing/story as I have other stuff to do. (I should have been more thoughtful before I posted that earlier - sorry!)

I can't help with battle stuff/stats either, as I don't know much about it, definitely not enough to advise someone else. So I don't know how difficult or simple it would be to implement the kinds of abilities you're suggesting.

So... yeah. You'll need someone else around here to tell you how feasible the battle system and other mechanical things in your game would be.

If you're interested about the art stuff for when it will be more relevant/practical, I could do some mock-ups of party members' portraits or the title, or w/e.
