I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Well, linear vs. nonlinear doesn't mean anything, since all the balance and planning is already done for you ahead of time either way. Most of the work would be UI- and resource-related no matter what you did.

...Says the guy whose Final Fantasy demake took sixteen years and over fifty people despite being purely text-based, with no interface and no resources. OK, yeah, actually reconstructing each scene and each battle and each area is also a ton of work. Which game is shortest? Hahaha... Probably FF10.

FF9 has a medieval setting. If you're not planning to make your own graphics, that will help a lot with finding graphics that will work. If you're using FF4/FF5/FF6 graphics for your tilesets, for example, they'll include almost everything you need for FF9/FF10/FF12's worlds, but be extremely useless for FF7/FF8's worlds.

Interesting point. I kind of assumed the OP was making own graphics. That said, there ARE a good selection of science fiction and IIRC even steampunk tilesets available for VX Ace now, I can cheerfully report. Modifying those would be easier than going from scratch.

FFX is a linear romp with truly turn-based battles. Most of the work would be UI- and resource-related. The engine already implements most of the features you'd need.

With the important exception of the linear part, I think this is more or less true of FFVII or FFIX. The linear part is a big deal from a design perspective but FFX still HAS ton of areas you'd have to map, so it doesn't really make it easier that you visit them all in a set order.

"Gambits" is where Final Fantasy lost me, honestly. Everything after 10 where it wasn't turn based anymore and felt more like a single-player MMORPG or some shit where I had to set up AI for my dudes or whatever...it just lost me. To each their own, I guess.

It seems like the battle systems of VII and IX would be easiest to do, but honestly those are the ones I remember the best. I remember that I HATED VIII's and I don't remember X's well at all.

I guess I mean, if you did FFX you wouldn't have to recreate Blitzball. And if you did FFVIII you wouldn't have to create that stupid card game, Triple Triad or something? So those aren't inherently obstacles.

You wouldn't feel that way about FFXII if the game offered meaningful actions that require micromanagement. It felt stale because you had a party of clones casting Cura, maintaining Haste/Regen/Protect/Bravery, and basic attacking every enemy with the strongest available gun.

In other words, only play FFXII if it's IZJS. It could still benefit from, say, making spells like Immobilize and Disable effective and necessary.

If you're building FFX without Blitzball, what's the fucking point? The only reason to progress the plot is to recruit characters from the Fahrenheit and post Calm Lands zones.

Well if you see creating Blitzball as at all mandatory then yeah, FFX is definitely DEFINITELY not the easiest. I would certainly go with FFVII or FFIX in that case based on being able to pull off.

I want to change my vote to an FF8 demake that has no combat at all, and instead replaces every single battle in the game with Triple Triad.

I shall refrain to have a reaction to this statement, while I try to wipe the tears I've shed during the whole adventure, and that double in ammount though every gameplay.

Good. I'll fill my stadium with your tears.

This would be a dramatically improved version of the game.
Just so everybody knows, ROMHacking.net did a complete overhaul of the terrible-quality Chinese FF7 hack, and it is much, much better. It's a full remake of a demake. The details can be found here.

A bit more info:
The actual page with the download.
You will need to somehow acquire (uh, legally?) a copy of the NES ROM, first.
It seems FCEUX runs the game best.
Example of Cloud's in-game animation (I reduced his size from the previous example). The top is a fast example and the bottom one is a slow example.

It's not a bad start, Jin, but it seems awfully...lifeless. Like, Cloud rushes up to his enemy and then gently taps it with his sword. There needs to be some forward movement there as he swings down.

Also, count on my support for scripting should you need it. I made Blitzball with events in rm2k3, so I'm pretty sure I can do it better with RGSS. I can code more or less any system you need replicated.

The first one is okay but his body needs to follow through with the swing animation more. I'm not a spriting guy so I can't like...be more specific than that but basically like...his whole body should be in the swing, not just his arms.
Thanks for the criticizing guys, I just updated him. Let me know if I should change anything, and if yes, what should I change and which frame needs work?

Also his sword switches from the back to the front of his head mid-swing, lol

Imagine yourself swinging an enormous sword, jin; the weight of it will pull your upper body forward. The animation needs to show that there's force behind Cloud's swing by having him bend slightly as the sword connects.

Watch his movements in that video for an idea of what I mean.
Lol, yes Lock I noticed that. Trihan, I see what you mean, thanks for pointing it out. I tried updating it again, the last frame I made him go down with the sword, and I changed the sword position, along with getting rid of one frame. Please keep the feedback coming :D

Much better! I would maybe have another frame after that with the sword angled down a bit to show the power of the swing.

The problem with the WIP you posted at 04:01PM is still that his entire body STOPS moving when he arrives on target, he stops and then swings to the run up to the swing seems awkward and wasted. He's gotta FOLLOW THROUGH. The 6:03PM one looks better but it's hard to tell without it in motion.
Okay here is the animation Max, I made it long sorry about that:

SO yeah, to me the problem starts at Frame 9, basically at that point he kind of STOPS RUNNING before delivering the swing which looks awkward in the light of the running start. Somebody who actually knows pixel art can tell you specifically how to fix this.
maybe I should get rid of frame 10? I mean FF6 and FF5 aren't the best when it comes to a heavy sword or like swing wise. The swings are all generic so I think it should be fine.
