STORYTELLING FOR A SHORT GAME

Yeah, I started my first games as huuuuuge ordeals (like literally one was about eight separate characters that each had their own quests and then slowly joined the main quest, it was insane XD ) but I found most of them hard to finish, so I definitely see the benefits of going small (also, I can only work on one project for more than a year or two before really wanting to do something else XD)
Hahaha, when I first started coming up with serious ideas for games a few years ago, they were unbelievably awful, full of clichés, and they were also *huuuuuuuuuge* - I just had no clue. Luckily I never made a noob out of myself by broadcasting those ideas to anybody, ever. That would have been so goddamned embarrassing. XD
Yeah, if you're a single person making games huge games ain't gonna cut it in the long run, I think.
My games seem to have been getting progressively shorter every game. Those I didn't finish was the long ones... There's just nobody that is that patient.
The challenge is making the player care in that short time. Gotta hit that sweetspot for complexity of story and characters.
Also important is focus and ignoring that feeling that makes you featurecreep it up, or else...

I'm reluctant to add many features at all because I only want a really simple first game to have to program.
I have the problem of slowly sneaking in new characters rather than new features, haha... one cast keeps fluctuating; I cut out a whole bunch of characters and side-stories, but later felt I needed to add more back in. I'm sure I don't, I just need to be more imaginative with the characters I already have.
