FIVE RANDOM THOUGHTS ABOUT VIDEO GAMES.

Posts

-Replaying through Crisis Core, Cloud is a lot more badass (within the FVII lore) than people give him credit for. Taking Zack's Buster Sword (which has to be like 50 pounds) and stabbing Sephiroth (who's the strongest character in FFVII lore) in the kidneys, then jumping 10 feet in the air with it, then more or less killing Sephiroth after lifting him up after being stabbed through the chest with his Masamune is fucking incredible, given that Cloud was like 14 years old and not Mako enhanced, meaning he shouldn't be able to even lift the Buster Sword, much less do anything else.

I wish people who played a ton of video games were less cynical and didn't pretend to hate video games.

I think this has something to do with a lingering self-resentment for spending so much time in front of consoles and computers as opposed to having social and life experiences.

-And, damn EA and Activision stole a giant portion of my PC games by taking over all the RTS companies, dispanding them, then continuing on with their series completly ruining them. I miss my Westwood, the least I can say is atleast they reformed into Petroglyph studios and their new headquarters is in sniping range of the old Westwood building (Now EA Pacific Studios).

You forgot Bullfrog. :(

These are people who have gotten old, and grown out of video games.

They'll deny that fact, but it's true.

Possible. I'd also say that this is the internet. Actually, you know, LIKING something is a sign of weakness. It's cool to be a hater.
-I'm getting sick and tired of Nomura and I want him to be suspended from Square Enix immediately. Bring back Yoshitaka Amano.

Please.
-SquareEnix needs to split back into Squaresoft and Enix, instead of buying other smaller gaming companies stock to put them in a better position for another takeover.
We don't need them to become a Japanese EA, we need good Rpgs.

Well, this is exactly what happened when the movie business began. Over the first few years, the studio system grew by swallowing up smaller production companies and distributors, until eventually it was an oligopoly with tight control over this industry, and it was this way from about 1920 until the late 40s, early fifties, when new legislation was passed that allowed smaller production companies and distributors more room in the market.

But, as a business, the primary responsibility of Squeenix is giving good returns to its shareholders. The highest-ups who make these descisions just crunch the numbers and sign paychecks and release games based on market analysis and such and such. I really don't think they care that there are a small-base of N.Americans that have grown tired of thier products, because as long as they're making a profit here, nothing is wrong to them.

Business is businnes.
Considering my video game development textbook mentions Square Enix and Final Fantasy over a dozen times, yeah. I don't think Square Enix is going to die any time soon. (Remember, Square Enix only made 40% LESS profit overseas in 2007. They still did profit.)

As an aside, they seem to be putting out far more different games than remakes now. Their next big game in Japan is a Snoopy game!

I think after Final Fantasy V and VI are remade, and Dragon Quest IV, V & VI are remade, and Final Fantasy VII and Dragon Quest VII are ported, that may be it for a long time for remakes.

I really wouldn't have a problem with that except for:

A. I used to like their rpgs

B. I don't own any of their stock.

Do you still buy their games? Because if so, you're explicitly sending them the message that you approve of what they're doing.

I also do not condone the remaking a whole lot of good old games. If they feel like messing around with old classics, they should make some new games like them.

There also is the fact though that I can just play them with emulators and a downloaded copy from the internet, but I do understand if people want to legally play these great old games on a modern system. I have to admit though that I did buy FFVI Advanced for the massivish new dungeon and soul shrine.

Q. It makes little difference whether I alone buy them or not. Which is exactly what nearly anyone else that doesn't really like what's happening is thinking. So nothing's going to happen.
- I wish games had more humour. Genuinely funny games are so rare. Portal was a great exception and it got lots of love. Before that there were LucasArts' adventure games and that's about it.

- Hardcore games suck.

- Loading times before the games start. How I hate them. I know there has to be some kind of loading for everything nowadays but I remember back in the NES days where, once you pressed POWER, were half a second away from getting going at the first level. Nowadays there are fifteen splash screens before you even get a chance at pressing start. And that's after going through all the interfaces to start the games.

- Hardcore gamers whine too much.

- Music games is the best thing since sliced bread. If only they didn't need hundreds of periferals.

- Co-op is the new black.

- Games take too much space. 8+GB to install is just stupid. Why can't people make smaller games?
-No organic meatbag is ever going to make a more entertaining robot then HK-47.

They already did. She's called GLaDOS.
In another comparison with customer satisfation and the movie business, some people say that having a name attached to a film means that it will make money regardless. IE If you attach Spielberg, Russell Crowe or Christian Bale to a film today then it'll probably do fairly well. In the video game biz, names aren't worth as much, because as the actual media makes the designer more invisible than in cinema.

This is why the few recognizable names that are floating out there (Sid Meier, Will Wright, Peter Molyneux, Shiggy, Kojima, Sakaguchi or Nojima) are worth SO much to more-than-just-casual gamers. Even if someone gets their name out there a little bit even though they make crummy games (like American McGee) then they'll probably still see good sales. Personally, when I see a game with the name Sid Meier attached, I jump at the chance to play it, because I really have come to associate that name with fun and quality.
I have the distinct feeling that newer games are getting crappier on the whole. I recently thought I was growing old of videogames due to the large number of games I wasn't completing. So I just popped in some older games I hadn't played in ages, like some of my PSX RPGs and Deus Ex and I realized I am still a gamer, just that modern games are less and less being made for gamers. I mean I enjoyed Mass Effect, but I just couldn't shake the feeling I was playing a sequel to Deus Ex that was in fact crapper than DX:IW.
Well, developers are spending boatloads of time making sure that the character models have perfect Eyebrow Expression MovementTM - who has time to refine gameplay after that?

Amen to that.

On another note, am I the only one who likes FFX-2 more than FFX? To me FFX invented a new genre: The On Rails RPG. I got so bored with the gameplay that I almost gave up. However, I continued and finally got some freedom with the airship and lo and behold the game became fun again. However, I became severly disappointed when I got to the last boss and realized I could have beat him with a party from 30 hours previous... What a drag... And for the record Auto-Life didn't even trigger (but I would have been more pissed off if it had). How Square managed to ruin a game with such a good battle system is beyond me.

FFX-2 on the other hand is great. The game has story but it gives you the ability to actually play the game right from the start. The combat system is fun what with the combo system and all and square managed to breath new life into the class system.

The more I play, the more I think FFX-2 was the original game and FFX was the half-baked prequel.
-The scene in FF6 right after you get Setzer with the airship flying into the Empire with Vector with the spotlights shining into the air and shit is one of the coolest videogame scenes ever and someone should paint/draw it or something because it's fucking badass.
