Do you never listen before you speak? If you have a novice that thinks "I'm going to make something phenomenal" without the grassroots knowledge of the kind of experience that only comes from years of discipline, there's every reason to believe that such ambitions brought to fruition will end up sloppy and forced instead of flowing like a proper dialogue and will ultimately fail.

You can't make something good before you understand what something bad looks like.

Can you hold conversation without being a miserable fuck? I listened to what you said, you made a blanket statement about "revolutionary = bad" based on the assumption that TagoMago has bad ideas when he hasn't produced a single thing for you to judge yet. I'm simply giving him the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps his dream game is a revolutionary concept, I don't know, I've never seen it.

By the by, I do "listen before I speak". TagoMago thinks his dream gane is revolutionary, and he's said he's not going to jump right into it off the bat, but save it for when he's prepared.

Coming in here and saying "THIS DREAM DIES NOW" is frankly childish and pessimistic, especially to a new member of the site.

He did read my so far story and concepts thread and gave many criticisms a couple of which were good but I have ideas on how to address most of them. I don't think he got that its a surreal black comedy of sorts in the vain of Terry Gilliam's Brazil.

can't make a bad game if you don't finish any games

Arguing with self-centered nerds on a forum can feel like you're making progress on your game, but I can assure you from experience that it is not.

I look forward to seeing what you make.
What was this discussion about again?

Yeah I agree the thread has gotten rather hostile and is being derailed.

Most importantly though for me was Suzy Cheesedreams post which reaffirmed for me that if done right it can be excellent.

Hahahaha XD Glad I could be of some help, then.

I agree that instead of trying to explain yourself to people here, you should just focus more on your game to produce a demo so that people can actually play what you're working on. Then the feedback will be much more useful to you, as you'll be getting critiqued on something tangible rather than just a bunch of ideas with no game to support them.
My big game is the most RPG Makeriest game ever.
I was actually about to jump in and say to give Hero's Realm a shot since it's one of the best ones, but I see that kentona has tooting his own horn covered! ^.~

That said, this playlist has a lot of the best ones around on it.

As to making games: start small and build up. You'll either complete your first game or not. If not, don't distress over it too much. A lot of us on this site have a folder (or five) filled with unrealised potential - myself, I have well over 30 just in my VXAce folder (and that's not counting my VX, 2k or 2k3 folders... orz ) so don't stress about it.

Just work what you can and learn from the mistakes of the past. Don't expect people to just jump on board after your first game, though. Sometimes it takes a while. A good idea is to get involved in the community in some way - get your name out there. Discussions like this one (and others about game design) is a good way to get known. Interact with the people on the forums. Take part in the small game competitions and other events we hold on the site. In fact, the game competitions are great for experimenting and offering to team up and get experience dealing with a team.

Getting a team means nothing if you don't have the skills to cover for each person in case someone drops out. Teams break up all the time so learning to handle people, to work with them, is imperative if you're going to aim for your magnum opus. In that case, the small game comps are great because you're working under a deadline, with a group of people and learning how to interact on small projects. Experience is a hell of a teacher, after all.

Both arguments are right, though. If you try too hard for something new and revolutionary you will probably burn down the house around you. That said, there are newbies who come in and wow us with their work. Pom is one of these - it saw a lot of success and was the creator's first game. There are others, too. Remnants of Isolation was created by a (relatively) newbie team and hell, they won the Indie Game Competition this year, which is by no means a small feat.

Just focus on making the game you want to see, learn from the mistakes you make and learn to listen to critique, no matter the form it takes. Listen, but remember to take what you need and discard what you don't, though. Ultimately it's your game and you'll know best what dreams you have for it and what it is shaping up to be.

Good luck~ And go play gams~ Or do research, as I like to call it~ ^.^)b
Anybody knows any german and played Hybris Rebirth Gold that was made with the rpg maker xp. Now that is a very special game i love it more than any other game it's very unique with it's battle system, world interaction, many boss fights, good story,it's sci-fi also.
I don't know if there will ever be an english translation, but there was an english demo of it once and i don't think it's available anymore, but those who know german can play the full version of the game.
