2014 MISAOS - THE VOTENING
Posts
The only one of these games that I've played is Oneshot... And I thought it was total trash.
I am the worst sort of person, it seems.

These are all three short games - under an hour each - and more deserving of top spot than a fan game and a game about paedophilia (no offence to these two games, but seriously - there were some great fucking games this year and people need to fucking play them more!)
im so offended
I agree though! After playing some of these games it's clear that there are a lot of great ones with amazing stories, characters, gameplay, and just overall impressions. There are still a lot more I need to play but I'll be voting for the ones I have in all the categories anyway.
May I say, without having played it, that I find it extremely difficult to believe that HOME is winning in "Best Interface Design"? It's a 2k3 game. My brain hurts thinking about how that could ever happen.
Does it have a really, REALLY impressive CMS or something? Cause I don't see how this could be happening if it was just the default 2k3 stuff.

No, it does not. It is pretty much the standard interface, it just gathered a solid fanbase. Which is also why it scored high in plenty of other categories.
I played the incomplete version and while it has its allure, the areas it is strong in are the ones that aren't really voted for.

I strongly encourage anyone wanting to play HOME to play OFF first, as HOME is a fangame of OFF.
Also, yeah, because of the game's popularity, HOME got lots of nominations and votes in categories that don't necessarily make sense for it. The setting nomination is also a little weird seeing as HOME's setting isn't original, and is taken from OFF.
But that's the kind of thing you get with something like this. Popularity trumps common sense.

Knowing how the Misaos work, I won't be expecting any wins, despite the fact that my game appears in nearly every category.
Out of all the games that were released last year, people thought ours deserved awards. That our games were nominated and voted on at all is something to be proud of.

Because Remnants of Isolation somehow got fucked over for GoTY despite winning the fucking competition - it didn't even get a look-in
The fact that it isn't up there tells me that there are some really awesome games out there that I need to play! Besides, the game won the IGMC. I'm happy enough with that.
Anyways, I was in such a game-making frenzy this year that I didn't have a lot of time to play them. This needs to be fixed.
We were supposed to do something about setting up some sort of nomination system that stopped being able to nominate one game for all categories this year, but forgot about it. >.<;
@accha: I mean no offence to the games mentioned. I rather liked them a lot for many different reasons, but I don't think some of them should be nominated for certain categories just because people only played that one game this year. But then, that's something of a thing each year. We're going to have to really do something about it. ^.^;

Misaos are broken and nothing more than a popularity contest. The one with the largest fanbase on Tumblr/Youtube will win, even in categories it doesn't deserve.
The Misaos were always a popularity contest, and actually predate the rise of sites like youtube and tumblr. And they are the only RMN awards we do regularly because no one ever puts in the effort to run a different more fair/competent awards. Everyone talks and complains about it, though...

Take a look at last year's Misaos and find yourself proven wrong. The most popular RPG Maker game of all time winning in only two categories speaks volumes about how "broken" the Misaos really are.
I do however agree there could be better ways to ensure a higher degree of neutrality. In all honesty, I think weeding out the games nominated in categories that don't even apply should be done before the voting options are even made public.

No offence taken at all! I was making a joke, but I think it was in bad taste, sorry >_<

Weeding out nominations means either playing the game and seeing if it meets criteria, or having other people play the game and tell you why it meets criteria. I may not come on RMN much but even I know kentona isn't doing the first one =P
Who would you suggest to weed out nominations?

I don't even care what won. The simple prospect that rabid fantards will huddle and vote the shit out of a game in a category it shouldn't be in is enough for me to disagree with this entire Misao concept.
In the end it's nothing worth bitching about, but I couldn't keep quiet this time around.
Maybe someone make a more 'professional', 'serious', and 'sterile' yearly game awarding event? Since a lot of people seem to be squabbling over this one...
The fact that practically anyone with an account can nominate (even those that haven't even played the said game) kinda knocks the bar down low for me, honestly.
Edit> I do not intend to sound offensive in anyway. If I did, sorry *^-^;

Maybe we should just have a yearly GOTY award with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place? I mean, Featuring is already akin to a "Game of the Month". It would simplify matters, as people would just cast one vote a piece for their favourite game, and the results would be compared across the site.
If you wanted to simplify matters even more, you could straight up restrict voting to the 12 Featured Games of that year, but this would only wind up causing endless cries of elitism and favouritism- I know how the internet works.

At least, some of this year's loveliest games are nominated, so I'll just vote for them and not take the whole thing too seriously. Like Liberty said, go play Last Word and Fleuret Blanc, and also Unraveled and Linus which is definitely the demo of the year ;)
To avoid outrage next time though (or even possibly right now with the votes too), you might want to do like a lot of rating systems and weigh the votes by relevance. Like, what matters is not only the total number of votes for a game, but how strongly those votes go toward a specific category*.
I can provide an algorithm if that helps.
(* sure that might be "unfair" for a game that's perfect all around, but that's not really our main problem here)

My immediate thoughts were close to Unity's, which were about how there were so many Best Setting nominations for a (well-executed) spin-off.
Although I'm stoked that Oneshot is in that category, because the setting/atmosphere is probably the highlight for me! I'm not even sure if I nominated it for that category, but seeing it there now makes all the sense in the world. XD
I still have a couple games in this nomination list I need to burn through, or at least sample. Antagonist is coming up next; it rivals my main nomination for Best Characters (The Heart Pumps Clay). If nothing else I've got to play all the ones contesting the nominations I managed to squeak in.
The only category I'm not iffy about is Best Non-RPG. Exeunt Omnes is a shoo-in for me.

Luxaren Allure gets most promising demo from me, hands-down. While my first choice of Remnants of Isolation for game of the year isn't listed, I can see myself voting for Soul Sunder.
I think maybe we should just create a separate thread where people list their top 10 games and why. I'd especially like to see someone like nhubi's list, who has played so many RM games this year that she can point out perhaps a couple that were underrated. I might make that thread soon. Misaos are Misaos and there's not much we can change about it because it is a democratic process and people should be allowed to vote freely.
The other option is to not get so worried or uptight about the Misaos and just move on with life. Sure, you might be robbed of an award, but there are bigger tragedies in life.

I am pretty sure I say that the misaos are kind of a lightweight nonserious thing right on the Misaos homepage. I mean, they are called THE MISAOS for starters.
